A New Life

It was dawn and the forest air had the fresh smell of rain. I looked up at my master, Sherrie, and she looked down at me. She was shot in her heart only a few weeks ago. If she were human she would have been killed upon the impact. But she is not human, she is a werewolf. But ever since the incident she has not been able to turn back from a wolf. We live together in the preserve that is on the outskirts of town. It is peaceful here, no more people with guns, and just plain no people. I do miss my old life, living comfortably in the apartment, chasing geese early in the mornings… But if it was meant to be that way things wouldn’t have changed. But, at least, now that were both animals we can talk to one another.

“Sadie, be a good doggie and go get breakfast, I’m in the mood for…mmmm… duck. Yes, and bring me the feathers too.” Well, maybe sometimes I like it better when we couldn’t talk. But, I turned around and set off toward the lake that was on the other side of the preserve. While I was walking birds on high trees squawked and chirped down at me and I was thrown into a state of remembrance.

When I was born I was immediately put in a crate with two other puppies. Soon after tall creatures came to look at us. They took away the two other puppies until I was the only one left. I was put into a whicker basket and lowered into a river. Water started to come through the wholes and I was rising. I made yelps and howls as my paws scratched at the bottom of the basket. Right when the water was up to my muzzle it stopped. The basket was pushed and I was able to crawl out when I washed on shore a little while later. Then master came and took me home. She dried me and cared for me.

The lake came into my view and sure enough there was a very handsome Mallard swimming steadily in the middle of the lake. I dogpaddled closer and closer to it, slowly as not to startle it. When I was only a few feet away I jumped and landed squarely on top of him. I made the kill and swam back to shore. I laid the duck down and went back to get another for myself. I repeated the procedure and came back with another fowl. I went over to pick up the first one and starred in astonishment. It was gone. But where had it gone? I laid it down right here and it’s gone!

“Roar! Roar Roar Roar!” I looked up and saw the black furry face of Tank, the biggest, short tempered bear in the forest. “Hey you little runt! I’ve waited too long to kill you, so I think my appointment’s overdue.” He took a swipe at me with his massive paw and knocked to air out of me. He sent me flying and I hit a tree sending birds scattering into the air.

“Actually, Tank, I was just catching these ducks for you, I see you’ve already enjoyed the first one.” And he had, just behind him was the first duck, ripped apart and thrown away.

“No thanks, I’m not in the mood for duck; I feel more like, dog.” He jumped at me and landed right on top of me making a good sized dent in the ground. It was just like my kill of the ducks. I tried flipping him over with my hind legs, but he was too heavy. His snarling fangs were coming closer and

everything looked like it was in slow motion. I could feel his hot breath on my face and just as everything was going to end, master jumped on Tank’s face, claws extended.

“Sadie! Go for the neck!” Master leapt onto the back of Tank’s head and pulled at his ears. Tank roared and his head went back leaving his neck exposed. I jumped and took hold, not letting go until Tank was just a lifeless black mound on the forest floor.

“How did you know I was in trouble?”

“You took too long getting my breakfast. But that doesn’t matter now, were both safe, lets keep it that way.”

The end
