True To Your Heart
Chapter 5: Keep No Secrets, Keep No Lies
Normal P.O.V.
“So does your busted lip have to do with why you got suspended?” Star asked Cas while stirring the soup and setting it off the burner to cool.
“Yeah, actually it does” Cas said, looking up at her.
That’s when Cas’s first younger brother Zane walked in.
“Hey sexy” he walked over to her. “You made me lunch?”
Star blinked and looked at him. “No, it’s for Ace.”
“You know he’s faking right?”
“You just want the soup” said Star as she gave him a small glare.
“C’mon, you haven’t cooked for us in a long time.”
“I’ll make you a deal then” Star said to him, reaching for the handle of the pot.
“I’m listening” Zane sat in the chair next to her.
“I’ll make dinner Sunday if you help your brother get over his cold.”
“That’s it?” he asked.
“That’s it” she answered.
“Deal”
Star poured the soup into the bowl that was on the tray and put the pot in the sink. Afterwards, she grabbed the tray and headed back upstairs to Ace’s room.
While Star was upstairs, Zane and Cas were talking.
“How come Star’s here?”
“She’s my girlfriend”
“But it’s Friday, aren’t you going out with the guys? I was gonna come. Star always comes over on Sunday’s.”
“I wanted her to come over today. She’s going to the dance tomorrow.”
“Why aren’t you going?”
“I don’t want to”
“Why? I mean, Star’s done things that she didn’t want to do, so what’s the harm in doing something that you don’t want to do?” said Zane as he ate drank the rest of the soup Star had secretly left him. “Isn’t that what a relationship is, doing something for the other one that makes them happy, even if it’s something that you don’t like?”
“Shut up Zane, you don’t know anything about relationships.”
Zane was smart for his age. He was always doing things like that, giving advice to Cas even though Cas didn’t seem to want it.
“So, there’s this girl at school who doesn’t know I exist”
“Then maybe it isn’t meant to be” said Cas
“But I like her, the other day she had on this outfit that made me double back. She carries a bag with her and her sisters on it all the time. She has jet black hair like you”
“Where is this conversation going?”
“Never mind” Zane was hoping for some advice on how to talk to girls from his older brother, but those were slim chances. Cas never really helped him with anything besides teaching him how to fight. So he finished up the soup Star had left him and headed upstairs to where she was.
Star was making Ace as comfortable as she possibly could, fluffing his pillow, moving the trashcan beside him just in case, turning the TV more his way so he could see the game.
Zane wondered in and sat in Ace’s chair while Ace sipped on his soup. Of course Ace had more than him, because he was the sick one.
Ace looked over at him then his eyes wondered back to the TV.
“Hey Star, where are your keys at?”
“Right here, why?”
“Can I see them?”
“Umm, sure” she took them out her jacket pocket and tossed them over to him.
He fiddled with them as he looked at the picture of Star and her sisters. He loved to see this picture, mainly because it had Candie, smiling her heart out.
“So I have this problem ….” he said not taking his eyes off of her keychain. “There’s this girl that won’t notice me, and I don’t know how to form sentences around her … so most likely she thinks I’m some sort of freak …”
“That’s not true. Why don’t you practice talking to her, like in a mirror or something? Here I’ll be the girl.” Star walked over to him. “Now, talk.”
Zane blushed as he looked up at Star and Ace tried to hold back laughter.
“I -- um …” he took Star’s hand in his. “I really, really like you a lot and I was wondering if … you know maybe sometime we could … catch a movie? Or just take a walk in the park? I’m up for anything you would wanna do.”
Just then Cas had walked in, his mouth dropped.
“Zane!” shouted Cas.
“Ahh!” Zane jumped to his feet and onto the chair. “Don’t do that!”
“You don’t like her you just think you do!”
“No, I like her, I love her. She’s just so … beautiful. I wish she would notice me … at least talk to me …”
“SHE’S TO OLD FOR YOU!” Cas shouted again.
“She is not! She’s my age!”
Star was blinking the whole entire time, not sure what was going on.
“In what dog years? Look at her” Cas pointed to Star. What part of her looks like your age? Not to mention she’s my girlfriend”
“What! No Cas, I don’t like Star, sure she’s sexy, but she’s waaay out of my league. I love Candie” he sighed. “and she wont talk to me”
“Oooooh” Star said, getting what was going on for the first time in the whole conversation.
“Oh, so why didn’t you say so?” said Cas.
“I tried to, you weren’t listening to me.”
“No wonder you’re always asking to see my keychain”
Cas laughed. “He’s a stalker and obsessed”
“That’s not funny. Poor Zane, I didn’t know you liked Can …”
“Who doesn’t like her? She’s ….”
“A child?” said Cas
“To you!” shouted Zane.
“You want me to ask her out for you?” offered Star.
“No! Then she’ll think I’m some wuss that can’t ask a girl out”
“Well you are” said Cas
“Leave him alone” defended Star. “I’ll remind her of you, and give her your house number, okay?”
“Well …. Okay”
“Don’t worry” Star winked at him. “You’re totally cute”
“Really?” Zane looked at her.
“Yup, just be yourself” her eyes shifted over to Cas and studied him for a while. Cas didn’t catch that he was looking at him. “and don’t lead her on. Try not to play games and be straight forward with her. Her feelings count too. Besides, if you don’t she just might start to become uninterested in you.”
Zane had caught that Star was speaking to Cas really instead of him and he couldn’t help but laughed. Just as Cas had turned to look at Star, she turned her attention to Zane.
“I’m actually about to head home now, call me if he starts to get worse and I’ll come, if it gets too bad, don’t waste your time calling me and take him to the emergency room, got it?”
“Yes ma’am” Cas and Zane said at the same time, Zane tossed Star her keys.
“Watch him, Zane. I’ll be right back after I drop Star off.” Cas walked out Ace’s room and headed downstairs and out to the car to wait on Star.
“Bye you guys, take care. Expect a call” she winked as she left the room and followed Cas out to the car.
When they were both seated in the car, Cas took off back to the school. He lived farthest from the school out of the two of them. Star lived within walking distance. Sometimes she drove, sometimes she didn’t.
When they reached their destination Cas leaned towards her, knowing she wouldn’t let him actually kiss her, he leaned back his way and looked out the window. “See you Sunday”
“Okay.” She kissed his cheek and grabbed her bag, got out the car and headed towards hers in the student parking lot.
Cas made a U turn and headed back home.
“Where are my keys?” Star spoke out loud. She fumbled around in her bag as she heard a giggle.
“Darell you’re so silly!” said a squeaky female voice.
The only reason Star looked up was because she heard Darell’s name. Darell was walking with a girl with mid back brown hair and brown eyes. She was just about his height, maybe a little bit shorter than he was.
Darell wasn’t trying to be funny, he was just talking. He couldn’t understand why the girl’s attitude had suddenly changed.
Star stopped right at her car door and watched them walking to the car.
Darell leaned over and unlocked his car on the passenger’s side and opened the door for the girl to get in. Before she got in she leaned over and kissed Darell on the lips, when Darell didn’t kiss her back she kissed him again and kept kissing him, pulling his body to hers.
Star didn’t know what to do. She had so many emotions going through her mind, so she did what came first and made the most sense, she quickly unlocked her door, got in, and sped away so fast, you thought the car was on fire.
Satisfied with herself, the brown haired girl stopped kissing Darell and got in the car. Darell was just looking very confused, as he studied the car, he only seen the color of it as it turned the corner. Black, reminded him of … Star! He brought his eyes down to look at the girl who now sat in his passenger side.
“What the hell was that all about? Where did that come from?”
One moment they were talking about school, the next she was trying to seduce him, and it hadn’t worked very well. If it had been Star, well that’s another story completely.
“Nothing, you just turned me on. You’re so dedicated, so smart, so sexy. I couldn’t help myself.”
Darell was still confused. “But we were just, I don’t understand, we--” Darell shook it off. “I’m not seeing someone Amber, but I really don’t want to be in a relationship with someone, other then the girl my heart is set on. I’m sorry if I led you on in any way.”
She gave a faint smile. “It’s okay. I’m just glad you were honest”
“Sure thing” Darell shut her door and got in on his side, started the car and took off for Amber’s house, he couldn’t help but wonder if that was Star who had sped off so fast, the same color car? It couldn’t have been a coincidence. From the quick glance of the car, it had looked like Star’s car … too close to her car for comfort, then he began to feel a pain in his stomach, now he was starting to rush things.
He felt so scared that he took out his PDA, touch screen and hit the number one on his key pad, quickly afterwards he hit send.
Star looked at the phone ringing in the other seat as she sat at the light. She gripped the steering wheel until her palms ached, but she didn’t answer the phone.
He got voicemail …
“Hey, Star here, I’m probably busy, here comes the beep, you know what to do ….” then the automated service began to speak.
“To leave a voice message press one, or just wait for the tone. To send a--” he hung up and dialed again.
Star looked over at the phone again as it started to ring, the light was still red. It was one of those lights that took forever to let you cross.
Just as soon as Darell was about to leave a voice message, he pulled up at the red light behind Star and hung up. Looking up and seeing Star, he wondered if she was just ignoring his call, or was driving at the time and didn’t want to be distracted.
He dialed again and watched as her head turned to the vibrating phone. Now he knew she was ignoring him on purpose.
The light turned green and Star took off driving, followed by Darell.
“Umm … Darell I umm … you missed the turn …” said Amber, the girl sitting in Darell’s passenger seat.
“I know.” said Darell. It was either she got out the car now, or she could shut up and ride. It was her fault Star was ignoring him. Amber didn’t mean anything to him and he would make sure Star knew that. He just gave her rides home after school every now and then. He had a feeling he dug himself deep with this one.
