..--..

"I can't believe your dad is letting me move in here," I say, watching as Adam puts the crib together.

He laughs. "You said that the whole time we were moving you."

"Yeah, Mel, you're beatin' that dead horse." Mahogany says from where she's hanging a painting she made. It's picture of me sitting on the couch with my hand on my belly. She surprised me with it one night as we were packing.

"I know, I know."

Adam stands and wipes his forehead. "It's no problem. How are you feeling?"

I roll my eyes. He's so protective! It's...nice. "I'm fine. The baby's kicking around like crazy, but I'm fine."

"Do you need a chair or-"

I shake my head, holding up the little pictures we got for the wall. "Nope, I'm good. Hand me the hammer?"

"Be careful with it," he warns.

"Stop worrying so much, I'm fine."

"Yeah, yeah."

"Where do you want the changing table?" Mahogany asks.

"By the window," I point towards the spot I think it'll look good in.

The rest of the apartment is all set up. We have our own furniture and kitchenware, our own paintings on the wall. It's...home. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I'm home.

Three hours later, the baby's room is complete. We sit around the kitchen table, cups of coffee in front of us. Mahogany picks at her bright, yellow colored nails. I tap my foot against the floor, my hand resting on my large stomach. I have homework to get to, but it can wait.

"Are you excited?" Adam asks, pointing towards my belly.

I snort. "Please, I've been ready to have this kid out for months. I can't wait until I can tie my own shoes."

"Yeah, and put on socks that match," Mahogany laughs.

"Shut up!" I exclaim. "I'll have you know, it's very hard to see things when you have such a large obstruction in your view."

"And you are large. You sure you're not having twins?"

I smack her. "No, I am not having twins." I hope.

"All right, all right. Come on, ice cream on me. Let's get you walking." Adam says, coming over to help me up from my chair.

I shake my head. "No, I don't want to get up. Too tired."

He rolls his eyes. "Are you really turning down free ice cream?"

Damn. "Make it ice cream and a cheeseburger and you have a deal."

He holds out his hand and we shake on it. Then, he helps me out of the chair. "You wanna come?" he asks Mahogany.

She shakes her head no. "Nah, I'll catch up on some reading. Have fun." She winks at me as soon as his back is turned.

I can't help but blush.
