Me & You
Chapter One
Everybody’s Fool
The dreadful weather outside mirrored Adeline’s mood.
The bright yellow strokes of lightening smashed down in loud claps. Adeline shuddered, if there was one thing she hated more than school it was a storm. Rain poured down, big fat droplets of water trickled down the window pane and past Adeline’s view. The world was overturned in the clear greyness of the clouds, and it only made her all the more thankful that her room was heated, making her feel safe and away from the chaos outside.
Then….splash.
“I hate you, Edward Baker!”
Adeline felt as if she could cry as she ripped away the now wet blanket and turned to face her awful brother. Both her white, skimpy singlet and small black panties were drenched with chilly water – as was her favourite bed cover. From Edward’s hand hung a blue bucket, taunting her with the fact that she was no longer toasty warm, curled up in her oak four-poster bed. The anger seemed to brush over her as her furious eyes narrowed.
Eddie, Adeline’s brother, looked over at her from the doorframe of her room and smirked – he didn’t even bother to try and look innocent. Adeline smoothed her now drenched hair away from her gray-blue eyes, which were sparkling with something akin to hatred. Eddie was not going to get away with this. It was the last straw; Adeline couldn’t handle his stupid pranks any longer. With a cat-like grace Adeline knew Edward would never be able to master, Adeline threw herself at her brother, claws stretched out threateningly.
It was no secret that Edward Baker was one of the most popular guys at his school. He looked exactly like their father, while Adeline looked like their mother. Edward’s wispy golden hair fell into his intelligent bright blue eyes, while his tanned skin seemed to glow in the artificial light. Adeline could never hope to pull off the way he looked so uncaring and smooth while dumping a bucket of freezing cold water over his sleeping sister. Out of her two brothers, Adeline had always gotten along with Huey better than she did with Edward. All Edward cared about was girls, music and school. There was no time to be nice to his little sister.
Next to her brothers, Adeline looked dull and boring. She was beautiful, of course, having the looks of Maylin Baker, her mother, gave her an advantage above most girls. But she was nothing compared to the rest of her family. Light brown, naturally wavy locks surpassed her shoulders spilled around her mid-back. Her gray-blue eyes could never seem to make up their mind whether or not they wanted to be or green. Sickly pale, in the past whenever Adeline tried to get a tanned, she only ended up red and flaky. Of course, she was always the centre of attention, glowing and beautiful, Adeline loved the way people treated her like royalty.
But her brothers were Gods in contrast to her.
Screaming with fury, Adeline stomped towards her brother, who was at least three feet taller than her and slapped him across the face. His dazzling smile was wiped away as Adeline watched the red hand mark form on his golden skin. “What is wrong with you?” Adeline spat, but she didn’t wait for her dear brother to reply. “Don’t you do that again!” she shrieked, reaching for a hoodie, which had been discarded there the night before.
Edward snorted, “Hue told me to wake you up.”
“Well wake me up like a normal person next time!” Adeline screamed in his ear, and by the looks of things on Edward’s expression; it hurt. “God,” she muttered, “What time is it?” she sighed, flicking a hand through her bed hair.
“It's exactly seven-thirty.” Edward answered smugly, walking away as he did so.
“Seven-freaking-thirty!” the panic settled in as Adeline practically flew to the bathroom connected to her bedroom. “You asshole!” she shouted as she twisted the golden knob, grinning with delight as the warm water immediately poured down from the showerhead.
In ten minutes flat, Adeline had the quickest shower in the history of the earth and was already dressed, applying a slight amount of make-up. Her blow-dried hair fell around her shoulders in curls. Scowling; Adeline knew she wouldn’t be able to straighten the unruly locks – there wasn’t enough time to care about her hair. Wondering why on earth Huey hadn’t woken her up earlier, Adeline stuffed her make-up in her draw and grabbed her last pieces of homework. Her bag was light as she raced down the stairs and into the kitchen.
Hue sat on the stool, munching away on apricot toast.
“You suck.” Adeline declared as she made herself a bowl of cereal. Normally Tina, their cook, made her breakfast but Adeline’s father had pushed her too hard and she’d quit the week before. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”
Huey, unlike his twin, was slightly less glamorous and self-absorbed. Lean and tall, the only thing Huey like to boast about was his “bulging muscles” he worked his ass off for. A pair of stylish black framed glasses slipped down his elegant nose as he wiped his blonde fringe out of his eyes. Edward and Huey were almost exactly alike – they both had the cornflower blue eyes, the tanned, golden skin, the muscular frame and short eye-sight. Their only difference, appearance wise, was the fact that Huey didn’t mind wearing glasses and Edward despised them with a passion.
Hue gave her one of his award-winning smiles. “I did, you said you would get up in fifteen minutes. When you didn’t, I told Edward to do it.” Shrugging, Huey stuffed another bite of toast into his mouth. “Your fault,” he blamed, eyes twinkling when he saw the look of utter betrayal on Adeline’s face. “You should have gotten out of bed when you had the chance. If you had, you wouldn’t have woken up to Edward’s face.”
Adeline shuddered.
“Where are my cute black heels?!” there came a scream from the living room and Adeline sniggered.
Lidia Baker, Adeline’s sister, was one of the more colourful people in her life.
It was clear by the look on her sister’s face as she stormed into the room that she was beyond pissed off. Just like her brothers, Lidia had the famous Baker blue eyes and golden blonde hair. In her younger years, Lidia had been one of the most well-known girls in Cliff Bay. But Adeline had grown up, and now that Lidia was the CEO of a large publishing company, Adeline was in the spotlight. Make-up done flawlessly and figure toned to perfection, Lidia Baker was Adeline’s best friend. Even though they’d grown apart in the past few years, she still turned to her older sister when things got too much for her to handle.
Hawk-like sky blue eyes immediately fixed on Adeline, “Did you take my shoe?” A smart, slinky black dress hugged Lidia’s shape leaving very little for the imagination. Her blonde hair was done in a bun with two strands on either side, framing her face. “I’m going to a meeting,” Huey’s eyes turn to coal as he took in his older sister’s attire stiffly. “And I really need this deal, so please tell me you have my other shoe.”
“You’re wearing that to a meeting?” Huey spat, before Adeline could cast him a warning glance.
Lidia stuck her nose in the air and grabbed her purse, which had been resting on the counter. “Yes.” She replied, smoothing down the black material. “Is there something wrong with it? Does look okay?” Lidia’s eyes moved between both Adeline and Huey. “Oh my god, please tell me the shop didn’t have a skinny mirror and I actually do look like this in real life.” Adeline could have laughed at how much her sister cared about her appearance.
“No, no!” Huey objected. “Sis, you look great…it’s just couldn’t you cover up a little more?” Huey was forever “protecting” his sisters, as Edward never seemed to care.
Lidia stared at him blankly, “Why?”
“You look great,” Adeline cut in, saving Huey from a life time of pain. Lidia was touchy on the subject of her wardrobe. “I don’t think those shoes would look good with that outfit though.” Lidia’s eyes widened in horror as Adeline spoke. “Maybe you should wear that sliver pair of mine you wanted to borrow last week? They’d look really great with the dress.” Her quick lie seemed to do exactly what Adeline had wanted: distract Lidia from Huey.
As Lidia flung herself up the stairs, Huey glared at Adeline.
“What?” Adeline asked, feigning confusion.
“Ade, you can’t just cut me off like that.” Huey dumped his plate in the sink and leaned back on the counter. “Do you think I should go up there and tell Liddy to get changed? Seriously, with that outfit she’s just screaming to be raped. I don’t want my sister walking out of the house like that. Meeting or not, she shouldn’t dress like such a tart.” Adeline rolled her eyes. “I’m being serious here!” Huey scowled at her before dangling his keys in front of Adeline’s face. “Come on, we better get going.” Huey sighed, obviously seeing Liddy’s dress as lost a cause.
Not in a million years would she take it off if Lidia found out that Huey thought it was too “revealing”.
They were out the door and sitting in Huey’s VW in a matter of minutes, Adeline eager to get to school and hear about everything that had happened on the weekend. The buzz of the Saturday night party Adeline had attended lingered like a bad smell. The memories still gave her shivers as she thought back to a couple of nights ago. It had been going great, when she’d decided that she’d consumed way too much alcohol for her body to handle. So in an attempt to sober herself up she’d gone outside.
That’s where she’d seen him.
Just as Adeline thought of him, the smell of cinnamon and cologne drifted into her nose – his smell.
The memory was overwhelming; Adeline couldn’t help but dwell on it.
“You know, you shouldn’t be out here alone. Someone could kidnap you, or even worse.” His voice had been smooth like honey. The moment Adeline had heard it, she wanted more, and she wanted him to speak again. All she could do was sit there and gap at his magnificent beauty. “Someone like me,” his goofy grin had an even stronger affect on her. “You’re drunk.” He observed dryly.
Adeline’s eyes narrowed, “What do you want?”
He shrugged, “I saw you alone, I thought I should check if you’re okay.” It had been too much, his voice and smell were intoxicating, as was the alcohol running in her system. The overpowering sense of attraction had sent Adeline’s thoughts into overdrive. Before she’d known what she was doing, her mouth was on his, her hands exploring his body. He pulled away and shook his head. “Sorry, I can’t do that while you’re drunk. Your vulnerable, that’s almost like raping you.”
“You want it though,” Adeline pressed on, running her tongue along his bottom lip enticingly. “I know you do.”
After that, things seemed to have exploded. And everything progressed from there.
Adeline had never known that anyone could make her groan like that. He’d been so gentle, so soft, but rough and demanding at the same time. It was one-off, though, and Adeline knew she would never see the guy again. No matter how good-looking he was, the way he dressed, particularly ‘goth’, meant people like her couldn’t even look at freaks like him. Sighing, Adeline pressed her back into the leather seat and watched the world pass her by.
If only that night had gone on forever.
“You okay?” Huey glanced over at his sister for the slightest moment. “You’re so quiet today. Are you mad at me?” he sighed.
“No.” Adeline just couldn’t get her mind off the boy whose name she didn’t even know.
“Oh god,” he choked. “You’re not pregnant, are you?”
“No.” she almost cracked a smile.
“Good.” The relief in his voice was evident. “Do you have a boyfriend I don’t know about?” he raised an eyebrow.
“No.” Adeline stared out the window, I wish, she thought.
“Then what is it?” Huey was growing impatient. Patience was not something he knew how to practice. It was more of Adeline’s thing, something she’d gotten from her mother. “Come on,” he pleaded. “What is it? Did you do something wrong? Are you in trouble? Did you piss dad off?”
Adeline smiled sadly as Huey pulled up at the student lot at Cliff Bay High School. “It’s nothing.” She whispered her mind still on that beautiful, amazing boy. “I have to go, Huey. Thanks for the ride.” She flashed him a smile, knowing it would melt him the moment he saw it. He was a softie like that. “Don’t worry about me, okay?” she cocked her head to the side. “I’m fine, really.” She added.
Swinging her legs out of the car, Adeline blew her brother a kiss and shut the door.
The red car sped off after Adeline had stepped away.
“Yo, bitch!”
Adeline grinned; Mae Strokes was her best friend.
“Hey,” Adeline greeted. “What’s hanging?”
Giving her best friend a quick once over, Adeline was satisfied that nothing dramatic had changed. Mae Strokes was the most stubborn person Adeline had ever had the pleasure to meet. Their friendship had lasted seven years, and it was clear that Mae was extremely protective of Adeline. Mae, to lightly put it, was the epitome of exotic beauty. Her dark skin was smooth and free of blemishes and her black, short hair was silky soft. Her eyes were even darker than her hair and had specks of gold flicking through them. Together, Adeline and Mae were absolute trouble.
“Nothing much.” Mae’s eyes narrowed as she looked her friend up and down. “What’s got you so hot and bothered?” her eyes lit up as the clocks seemed to turn in her head. “Where were you at the party on Saturday night?” the knowing look on Mae’s face left no room for lies.
And yet, Adeline decided to give it a try. She shrugged, “I went outside because I drank too much and I didn’t want to do something stupid.”
Both of Mae’s brows creased. “But there was no one there when I checked.” Adeline felt herself flush. The grass had been soft and comfortable, but he had taken her to his car so they weren’t in the cold. Eyes narrowed, Mae’s nose was almost touching Adeline’s forehead, she was that short. “What aren’t you telling me? Come on, spill it all out. I know that you’re keeping something from me.”
Before anyone could speak, Adeline felt someone smash into her back and her body tumbled to the ground in a heap.
“Oh my god!” Mae screamed as she helped Adeline up, her eyes burning. “This is my favourite handbag.” It was now covered in mud and dirt. Willing herself not to smile, Adeline turned to see who her attacker was.
Emily Foster.
Pleasantly plump and overly cheerful, Adeline had always enjoyed Emily’s personality when she needed a bit of a pick up in her mood. But clumsy as ever, Mae had always hated her for unknown reasons to Adeline. Her curly, frizzy hair was wheat blonde and Emily never looked after it – it was clear to see she’d given up in taming it long ago. Her eyes were a bright green, always sparkling and happy. Emily was even shorter than Adeline, and that was another reason why she liked her so much.
“Hey guys!” Emily ignored Mae’s wails and instantly turned red. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Mae.”
“You better be,” she growled. “It was my last fifty bucks after I was sacked from my job.” Adeline giggled, but was silenced when Mae sent her a look that spoke volumes. “What do you want?” Mae sighed tiredly, looking Emily over with very little interest.
“I just wanted to know if you know who the new guys are. Everyone is talking about them!” her excited tone was far too high-pitched for that time of morning. Adeline was barely awake, and Emily’s cheerful nature was not helping. “They’re supposed to be so hot.” She gushed; Mae rolled her eyes but continued to listen to the girl’s frantic babbling. “So I thought since, you know, you guys are popular and stuff that you could hook me up with one of them.”
Mae snorted and Adeline sent her a warning glance.
“We haven’t seen them yet.” Adeline spoke before Mae could. “But if we do, we’ll definitely put in a good word for you.”
“Oh, thankyou!” Emily clapped her hands. “You guys are such great friends!”
Once they were sure she was gone, Mae laughed and hooked an arm around Adeline’s.
“Don’t be mean.” Adeline scolded.
Mae stuck her tongue out at Adeline, her eyes glittering with mirth. “She’s so annoying, though!” Adeline gave her friend a dry look but kept her mouth shut. “I mean, she pushed you over. What kind of person runs into someone else? Ade, I think your way too nice for your own good. You let people walk all over you!” Adeline couldn’t help but agree, she let people treat her like shit sometimes and she never had the guts to tell them off. “Grow a back bone.”
Grow a back bone.
Was it that easy? Just telling people to fuck off, that was one thing, but acting like a complete bitch – just like Mae – was a little over the top. It was Adeline’s nature to be kind to everyone. She couldn’t help it, her life revolved around making other people happy. Her mother would have been proud if she knew that her own daughter was the peacemaker in the family. But her mother wasn’t around anymore.
She was gone.
“Yeah.” She replied tonelessly.
“I wonder if what Emily said about those new guys was true.” She grinned in a suggestive way. “Now we both know I’ll get to them first.” Adeline smiled at this, Mae was forever thinking with her pants. She couldn’t blame her though; Mae was gorgeous in every single way possible and she knew it.
That’s when a pair of amazing green eyes caught Adeline’s attention.
He stood with a group of jocks, they were all laughing and mucking around, whistling at girls who passed by. He looked nothing like he had on Saturday night. In fact, he looked almost normal. Instead of his black baggy jeans and a metal band T-shirt with too many piercings to count, he looked smooth and slick. The look suited him, but Adeline liked his gothic attire better. His red-golden hair hung over his eyes, which were fixed directly upon Adeline, staring into her core. His dark green shirt hugged his muscles while his jeans were held loosely around his waist with a black belt.
“Damn,” Mae said. “I want some of that.”
Without warning, he began to make his way towards the two girls, eyes never leaving Adeline.
“He’s coming over here!” Mae fiddled with her short, layered hair. She turned to Adeline. “Ade, please tell me I look sexy.”
“You look sexy.” Adeline said; the amusement evident in her voice.
Her breath caught her in her throat. Images of Saturday night flooded her brain, a sense of crushing excitement washed over her. Was he coming to talk to her? Adeline bit her lip. She didn’t want Mae to know that she’d spent half of her night in the back of guy’s car. Mae understood, but she wasn’t a slut, and she didn’t want Adeline to be a slut either. Licking her lips, Adeline chanced a glance at him. He was smiling at her, the corners of his slightly pinkish lips curling.
“He’s so fucking hot.” Mae commented, eyeing him like a piece of meat.
A pang of jealously shivered down Adeline’s spine as she watched her best friend with a hawk-like closeness. Shrugging, Adeline consciously wiped the underneath of her eyes to make sure her make-up wasn’t running. “He’s okay.”
“Okay?” Mae gave Adeline a look of disbelief. “You’re kidding me, right?” she shrieked. “You can’t be serious! He’s more than just okay; he’s a fucking sex God. Ade, what’s wrong with you?” she flicked Adeline over the head. “Did someone meddle with your brain while you’re sleeping? If he’s okay, we’re hideously ugly. And I am no where near hideously ugly. This,” she slapped her own ass. “Is to die for. That,” she gestured towards him, who was still trying to make his way toward them – people seemed to crowd him like a magnet. “Is breath-takingly sexy,"
“Why thankyou very much."
Adeline froze.
His voice sounded different. It wasn’t soft; it wasn’t honey-like and soothing. It was deep like his, yes, but it wasn’t melodically beautiful like his had been. Adeline sighed with relief; she was so glad that nobody would find out about her one-night stand. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of doing it, but ashamed of whom she did with. He was nothing like the types of people everyone expected her to go out with.
He’d been trouble, a bad boy looking for a bit of fun.
And she just happened to be there in the right place at the right time.
“Hello.” Mae said in a sultry, low voice. “And what might your name be?”
“Michael Adams, you can call me Mike.” Mike grinned leaning inwards, closer to Mae. “And what is your’s?”
“Mae Finley.” She replied, licking her lips suggestively. “Are you new here?”
Adeline snorted, “Obviously.”
It was like Mike just realized she was there. “And who are you?” he looked her up and down, taking in her every curve and movement. Slowly, a grin spread over his face.
“Her name is Adeline; for once you’ve finished mentally raping her.” Mae replied dryly, not giving Adeline a chance to speak. “You know, she’s not a piece of meat.” Adeline raised an eyebrow, moments before Mae had been eyeing Mike like he was being served to her on a platter.
“Well,” Mike said, finally looking at Adeline’s face instead of her body. Before she knew it, Mike had her hand in his. He placed a soft kiss on her knuckles and winking at her. “It’s very nice to meet you, Adeline.”
A/N:
So this is my newest story that I'm working on.
I know there might be mistakes and what not, but my beta-reader can't beta for me anymore because she's too busy. So I apologise for that, really, I do. I write for fun, and I don't exactly have all the time in the world. This took a while to get out because I've had a case of writer's block. Actually, when I was planning this, I did so many different ones that I have eight deleted in my rubbish folder and seven in my writing folder. Quite irritating when I'm trying to get a feel of the characters and their lives.
This might seem a bit different to I'm Feeling Lucky because she's popular and lots of people like her. This isn't just about romance, it's about breaking out of the crowd and being your own self. Obviously, once I've gotten all the chapters up you guys will realize that. I'm Feeling Lucky is under editing, and I really hope you guys like this one as much as you liked IFL. So, yeah. Please be kind, I've been working really hard on this one. It's sort of my baby now that I've finished IFL. Anyways, I'm rambling.
Love,
