Me & You

Chapter Twelve

Call Me When Your Sober

Adeline stood beside Finn, watching Mike Adams from a far.

"So run this by me again." Adeline demanded, her irritated expression was set in rock-hard stone. She wasn’t pleased with what Finn wanted her to do, especially in front of all Mike's friends. She didn’t want to hurt Mae, even if she had ruined her friendship with other people, deep down inside Adeline still cared for her former best friend and that said something. "Just so I can be crystal clear with what I'm supposed to do."

Finn sighed, exasperated and flicked a hand through his silky black hair. "You walk up to him, ask him out and make sure to tell me where you're going. Then half into the night, you text me and I'll come and "save" you. I want him to think he's won, because then he'll let his guard down. He may not love you, but if a freak waltzes in on your date and steals you away from him, it's going to wound his pride. Then we can go on a "date" and make sure he sees us. This way, he'll know that he's got his work cut out for him. I want him to suffer in any way possible."

Adeline couldn’t blame him.

"Do I have to flirt with him?" she ground out.

Finn's eyes darkened, "Trust me, I don’t like it either."

"Then why are you making me do this?" Adeline whined, "Why can't you think of some other way to "punish" him?"

"Because he's shown interest in you!"

"I hate my life." Adeline declared.

"No you don’t," Kitty whacked Adeline on the shoulder as she made her way over to the two teens, a small smile on her face as she watched Finn and Adeline bicker. "Besides, how bad can it be? It's not like he's ugly or anything, so that’s a plus."

"Sometimes I think you guys want to ruin my life."

Finn gave her lopsided grin and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "If you do this for me, I will be entirely grateful to you for the rest of my miserable life."

"Ugh," Adeline made a face and stomped her foot – as if hoping this would show her immense displeasure. William giggled from behind Kitty, only to let out a loud 'OW! That hurt' because Kitty hardly shared his amusement. "Fine," she grumbled, folding her arms over her chest. She gave Finn a look and tried to act stern, but she couldn’t stop herself from grinning because of the boyish smirk across his face. "But you really, really owe me – big time."

"I know." He muttered, pushing her towards Mike. "Just play it cool."

"Remember," Kitty winked, "Flirt a lot!"

With the suggestions floating around in her head echoingly, Adeline strolled far from casually towards Mike and his group of friends. She spotted Emily watching the copper haired boy with interest, and smirked. Wandering over towards Emily, she chatted with her for about fifteen minutes. Finn made gesture movements dramatically, pointing towards Mike. Finally, his pair of sparkling, confident eyes locked onto Adeline. A smirk was plastered across his face as he sauntered over to Adeline and placed a hand beside her on a locker. She stretched her face into a smile.

Vaguely, William gave her the thumbs up from behind Mike.

"Well what do we have here?" Mike sung happily. "You've been keeping a low profile these past days." His eyes roamed over her body lazily, taking in every fine detail and flaw. Adeline had to stop herself from curling backwards in disgust. "I haven’t seen you much, has Mae been giving you a hard time?"

"I heard your together now." Adeline spoke up dryly.

Emily scurried off nervously, sensing their feud.

Mike flashed Adeline a grin, "Jealous?"

"Maybe," Adeline cooed.

Mike looked somewhat surprised by her flirtatious voice. "Are you kidding me?" he blanched, finally regaining his smooth pose. "I always knew you'd come crawling back to me." Adeline ignored the fact that she was never with him in the first place. "They always do, it's just my irresistible charm and good looks." He waved his hair around for the effect. "Besides, deep down you know you want me and you're totally jealous of Mae getting to me first. That’s why you tried to pull us apart. I'm not stupid; I've seen the way you look at me when I'm kissing her."

"I can't help being envious." Adeline pretended to pout.

"That’s okay," Mike said huskily, "We can go out and Mae will never know."

"Are you sure?" Adeline feigned fear. "Because I don’t want to go against her."

"But she hates you."

The knowledge that Mae truly did hate her stung, but she pushed it to the back of her mind and focused at the task at hand. She was absolutely revolted with the fact that Mike was openly flirting with her, in plain view of the rest of the school. Then again, people didn’t pay as much attention to her as they used to. She'd found it was a nice change to all the rushed 'hello's' and ass-kissing. It was quiet and no one bothered her anymore, it was like she was invisible. For once she was left in the shadows and nobody annoyed her with their judgemental comments.

Mike watched her closely, mistaking her disgust for hesitation.

"Come on, we'll go to a party where Mae won't be. I'll make sure of it."

"But what if someone tells her that we were there together?" Adeline added in.

Mike snorted, "She won't believe them. And I can always lie." He wiggled his eyebrows, "I'm pretty good at that. We're alike like that in some ways."

Adeline's blood boiled. "You think I'm a liar?"

"Don’t take it as an insult." Mike sniggered, "But you lied about not being attracted to me and everyone could tell you wanted me so bad."

"I didn’t want to hurt Mae." Adeline defended herself, even though she didn’t like him one bit.

"Noble," Mike scoffed. "But pointless, in the end she got the guy."

"Are you sure?" Adeline raised an eyebrow. "Aren't we organising a date right now?"

"Are we?" Mike responded.

She clenched her fists. He wanted to hear it from her own mouth. "Will you go on a date with me, Mike?" she said, without feeling.

"I'm sorry." Mike apologised, "I didn’t quite catch that, Adeline. Will I what?"

"Go a on a date with me," Adeline demanded, "It's what you wanted."

"Ah," he pointed a finger at him. "But is it what you want?"

"Since when did you care about that?" Adeline's brow furrowed.

"Since always," Mike sniffed.

Adeline's eyes hooded over in frustration. "I want you to go on a date with me!" she bellowed, just below a scream. People didn’t seem to notice though, only Finn and Kitty looked on with something half way between amusement and horror.

"You go a date." Mike said in a sing-song voice.

"Where are we going?"

"You'll see." He winked in a way that was supposed to seem sexy. It repelled Adeline in every way. "I'll pick you up."

They exchanged details quickly and scurried off into the direction of their next classes.

Finn looked positively furious. "You really sounded convincing there," he said suspiciously. "Whose side are you on?"

It took a moment for Adeline to realize that Finn was making a joke. The sides of his personality that Adeline had never seen always seemed to shine through at the most varied of situations. Warily, Adeline let out a laugh. Finn was happier around his friends – he was always cracking jokes, having play fights with William or Tristan and Adeline had even once seen him pretend to be gay. But he could be serious and deep as well. It took a while for him to open up, but once he did, all his opinions around world hunger and peace poured out and made him seem so much more human that he originally was.

William flicked out his lighter. "I like fire," he informed them all as they hurried to their next class.

"What do we have next?" Adeline dared to ask.

"We have English," Kitty linked an arm with Finn. A tinge of envy shot through Adeline, before she realized that it was just Kitty – one of Finn's best friends. They weren't romantically involved in anyway as far as Kitty was concerned – and she hoped that Finn felt the same way. "You guys," she gestured to William and her. "Have science."

Finn let out a chuckle, "Sucked in,"

William clapped his hands, "Yay!" he exclaimed, "I love that teacher."

"Uh," Kitty looked confused. "I thought you hated him."

"It's a love-hate relationship." Adeline explained, having seen their on-going arguments first hand.

William had a knack for getting in trouble.

"He's such a lovely person!" William said brightly.

"He tried to get you expelled at least three times over this term alone. And you've damaged like, most of his supplies, Will." Kitty's tone dripped with sarcasm. "If that’s not a declaration of love, I don’t know what is."

"I'm misunderstood."

Adeline snorted in an unladylike manner, "You just like the thrill of getting in trouble."

Finn flipped William off. "Well I hate you, so I'm gunna skip." He turned to Adeline. "Coming?"

"I can't." she whined, "I almost got caught with you guys last time."

God, Adeline mused, they were corrupting her so much and she almost didn’t care.

"Yeah," Kitty agreed. "We should probably go to school, just this once."

"Fine, be that way."

"I love you!" William called out as they pushed past a group of year eights to get to their class. His attempted kiss on Finn's cheek was rejected, so William grabbed Adeline's hand, spun her around and began dragging her towards the science lab. "Finn such a grump," he complained. "He loves you more than me."

"Bull,"

"Not bull!"

The teacher glared at them as they trampled into the classroom, fake guilty expressions plastered across their faces. William forced Adeline to sit next to one of Mae's friends with him, whispering something to her about a fashion victim. Adeline personally didn’t want to know what he was going to do to her. The last time he saw someone's clothes he didn’t like, he tried to undress the girl. Although for his own pleasure, or purely because he hated the shirt was unknown to Adeline. So far she'd seen him commit countless crimes against the school and not get caught once.

It was almost as if teachers didn’t bother with him anymore.

Suddenly, the teacher, Mr. Kikes, sniffed the air.

"What's that smell?"

Adeline stiffened and glanced over at William, who had his lighter in hand. William's lighter hand shot up into the air and he grinned happily at the fuming teacher. "Don’t worry, Teach, it's just my lighter." He guessed to the orange-faced clown beside him. "I was just fixing her clothes for her."

There was a loud, deafening shriek.

"What the fuck is going with you?" the blonde screamed, a tiny flame alit on her sleeve. She waved her arm about stupidly and one of the jocks dared to laugh at her, she shot him a mean glare and stomped on his foot with her heel. His eyes watered. She whipped around to stare at William. "This shirt was, like, seventy bucks and I got it from my father whose in Thailand!" it seemed so important to her, William almost looked sympathetic. "You’re such a freak!" she whirled around to the teacher, the flame now put out from so much movement from William's victim. "Aren't you going to do something?"

"I'm sorry, sir but I was only trying to help!" William protected himself.

The girl's eyes widened in horror, "How does burning my fucking shirt help me?"

"That was a disgusting colour." William informed her politely. "So I thought I might help you out."

"William," Mr. Kikes tried to look stern, but his face kept bursting up into laughter. "I'm going to have to-;"

"Yeah, yeah," William gathered up his books and sent a wink at Adeline. "The principal's office – now!"

The girl looked appeased. "Is he going to be expelled?"

"Well," Mr. Kikes looked flustered. "I don’t know about that."

"What?" she seemed outraged by the idea that William would continue attending the school. "Some stupid, fucking Goth kid burns up my sleeve of a very expensive shirt and you don’t think he'll be expelled!" Adeline cringed from the high-pitched noise the girl was making. William began to hum a random tune and skipped out of the classroom without another word. Adeline was sure he wouldn’t go to the office. "What kind of school is this?" she continued to rage onward. Mr. Kikes tried to calm her down, but she went unfazed. "That's just so…" she searched for the right word."STUPID!"

Adeline buried her head in her desk and shuddered, it was going to be a long science class. She could tell.

—?—

"I like him."

Adeline sent Huey 'The Look' and checked herself out in the hallway mirror. She'd gone for a boring look, not wanting to give Mike too many ideas. She wore a plain black, V-necked singlet that hugged her curves loosely. Her light blue jeans were baggy and had some holes in them, but it looked professional and well done. Her make-up, natural-looking and barely there, was just some lip gloss and a tiny amount of foundation for the areas of her face she wasn’t happy with. Light brown hair was left to fall around her shoulders in curls, because lately she'd taken to leaving it natural.

The whole look gave Adeline the appearance that she wasn’t trying to look good.

Huey repeated his sentence as he watched Mike get out of his car, "Adeline," he poked her; "I like him. He's normal."

"One word," she warned him with her index finger. "And I'll make you wish you'd never been born."

"Fine, fine." Huey waved his arms around and opened the door just before Mike could ring the door bell. He winked at Adeline. "Have fun kids." He pushed her forward and slammed the door in their faces.

"Your brother is a lovely person." Mike told her as they walked to his car.

Adeline climbed in, silent.

Mike attempted conversation, but every time Adeline shot him down. Just because Adeline was going on a date with Mike, didn’t mean that she would pretend to enjoy it. In fact, it was the complete opposite. The more hostile towards him, the better – he deserved it for the way he treated woman. Adeline would never in her life lower herself to actually suck up to him. It was just too much for Finn to ask.

The party he took her to was on the outskirts of town; Adeline silently sent Finn a text message of the address of the party and stuffed her phone in her back pocket, giving Mike the honour of holding the door open for her when they walked into the house. People were stuck to their partners, hip to hip, mouth to mouth, breast to chest. The smell of sweat and alcohol drifted over to Adeline and washed over her strongly. She shuddered and Mike chuckled. The music was loud, louder than she was used to, and it rung in her ears as she followed Mike to everywhere he was leading her.

He shoved a drink in her hand, toasting her, before downing his own and getting another.

So, he wanted to get her drunk.

"Nice party," Adeline commented easily, sipping her beer lightly. The burning sensation sent tingles down her spine.

"Yeah, it's pretty wicked, isn’t it?" Mike flashed her a smile. "Wanna dance?"

"Not really."

"Aw," he pouted. "Please?"

"I don’t dance." Adeline told him dryly.

"I bet you do." Mike pressed on.

"I said," Adeline spoke slowly, as if she was talking to a three year old. "I don’t dance."

"Then why the fuck did you come?" Mike blew up; his drink splattered everywhere as he threw his hands up in the air. "What are you, some kind of stone cold ice bitch? You flirt with me this morning, but then when I take you out in a nice car, to a cool party – you act like a complete fucking whore. How do you think that makes me look?" he barged over to her and smashed her drink onto the floor. "Now dance with me." he growled.

"I can't believe my brother liked you."

Mike's eyes flashed with danger. "Why are you here if you're miserable?"

Adeline bit her lip, wishing Finn would hurry up. "Let's just say I'm doing someone a favour."

"What the fuck?" he snarled, slapping her across the face. "Is there something wrong with you?"

Suddenly, he was thrown to the ground and Finn's foot was slammed into his face.

"Slap a woman in my sight ever again, and I'll personally make sure your life is ended in the most horrible way thinkable." His low, dark tone was enough to make Adeline sweat. Her heart clammed up as she watched his clear eyes run across her cheek softly. He brushed two fingers over her skin. "Are you alright?" he asked, ignoring Mike's yelling and whining. "He looked like he got you hard."

She cringed from the stinging. "I'm fine." She told him.

"Are you sure?"

"Hey!" Mike cut in. "What the fuck is this?"

"This," Finn began to explain, but Mike didn’t let him finish.

"What the hell are you doing here with your little freak friends anyway?" he gestured toward Kitty and William, who stood there looking like they wanted to be anywhere but the center of attention. "Nobody wants you here."

"To be quite frank with you, Mike, I don’t care what anyone else thinks of me."

"Yeah, well, fuck off." He retorted lamely.

"Gladly."

"What are you doing anyway?" Mike asked, sending a questioning look at Adeline.

Finn smirked and moved a little closer.

"See what it feels like, Adams?" Finn wrapped an arm around Adeline's waist. Her face heated up, noticing that everyone was staring. "Do you see how fucking used you feel?" Finn's eyes roamed over Mike like he was a piece of shit on the side walk. "This is what its like."

Then Adeline barely had any time to register what was happening before Finn's lips crashed against her's in the most perfect moment possible.
