I like sitting
On dusky porches, with you;
When we can just
Let life go slower,
Even if we can’t stop it.
Even if you need to stop.

Or I like standing
Outside, crunchy leaves around me,
Telling me our summer is over now
And I need to speed up again.
Even as blue skies remain.
But I’ll just stand outside a bit
Longer; I’ll turn around and
You’re there, so I don’t mind
Having to speed up.

As the wind blows my hair,
You walk over by me—
You crunch, I laugh—
And we stare up at the balcony,
The one above the porch,
And we wonder if we’ll ever get there.

Have you realized it yet?
Have you realized
They never even gave us any stairs?
I don’t mind speeding up.
Really. I want so badly to get there.
But I don’t know if I can
Speed up enough
To fly.
