What's Already Gone
What happens to a child when his childhood's eternal?
Got a wife and kids and another one on the way.
What happens to a lady when her charms have rusted over?
Got a husband who stays out all day to play.
This is the story of a love gone wrong,
These are souls wrapped in a little mediocre song,
Can't make it right tonight,
Can't run away today,
Don't bother fighting for what's already gone.
So every step he takes on his way to the casinos
and the hotel bars in Reno are all littered in lies.
He couldn't face himself so he left her to discover
that he never really loved her, but she isn't surprised.
She holds her babies close and whispers to her mother
who died this past November in the river denial.
She asks her mama why God should curse a loyal soldier
then remembers what she told her, "just shut up and smile."
This is the story of a love gone wrong,
These are souls wrapped in a little mediocre song,
Can't make it right tonight,
Can't run away today,
Don't bother fighting for what's already gone.
His fire dies away and he's slowly getting sicker
from the endless string of liquor and the lump in his throat.
He tries to sleep and thinks about the times he told her
that he couldn't live without her, and she bought every note.
She loves him to this day, but he just can't love himself
much less anybody else; she knows he's crazy tonight.
And he'll come back home soaked in tears and on his knees,
laying out his desperate pleas for her to put up a fight.
This is the story of a love gone wrong,
These are souls wrapped in a little mediocre song,
Can't make it right tonight,
Can't run away today,
Don't bother fighting for what's already gone.
(She remembers long ago when he said, "please don't want me."
He was so damn cold and she was far too optimistic, no,
this will never do, this living lie, this patterned "I love you."
She leaves a note and takes the kids, says goodbye and goes
somewhere...where the air is thick with honesty...
and he won't be around to look back on this day.)
This is the story of a love gone wrong,
These are souls wrapped in a little mediocre song,
Can't make it right tonight,
Can't run away today,
Don't bother fighting for what's already gone.
Yeah, yeah...
This is the story of a love gone wrong,
These are souls wrapped in a little mediocre song,
Can't make it right tonight,
Can't run away today,
Don't bother fighting for what's already gone.
note: I realize I ended on a slightly ambiguous note, I couldn't reason it any other way. Actually I'm only half satisfied with this and will probably be forced to revise it someday.
