Mobile Suit Impulse
Chapter 1
19 Years Later
Sixteen years had past since the war between Earth and Zaft took place. The nations had thought they’d be at peace with one another and all hoped that it would be a long-term effect. Yet this chain was broken when Zaft was the first to have shown mass production on military weapons and newly designed Mobile Suits. But it couldn’t be blamed seeing as the other nations had been secretly producing new machines themselves in case anything would happen.
But the truth remains that since 16 years ago, things were very different. Since the moon had been shattered, 42 large pieces of it now revolved around the Earth, almost creating another asteroid-like field in which was neutral territory. On these 42 pieces of rock, small military bases and colonies were built on them. Most of the colonies were poor ones to be exact seeing as there weren’t much work opportunities on the sectors unless they worked elsewhere such as the military sectors. Co-ordinators were relatively extinct by the naturals who killed them two years after the war. Those who escaped found shelter elsewhere. Since the Earth was slowly being occupied by more and more naturals, a small percentage of still existing co-ordinators lived in space and on these pieces of rock more commonly known as the 42 Sectors of Moon.
Another three years past. The new war which had been going on for these years was irrelevant, more verbal than battle as none of the nations had yet to attack one another. But there was no telling when the first strike would be made.
Through all these years, the year was now 2024, nineteen years after the war had ended. On a nearly remote colony known as Sector 34 is where our story begins. Spending his days working as a mechanic fixing various broken aircrafts and other scrap pieces of metal that floated in space, he whipped his forehead floating in the non-gravity hanger. His adopted father ran a small junkyard business there and whenever he was finished running his father’s shop repairing devices and aircrafts, he’d work on his latest project. Throughout the years collecting pieces of metal and parts that floated in space, he never thought that one day he would have all the pieces and them put together. Today was that day. The giant machine laid there in the hanger. A fully reconstructed Mobile Suit he’d been repairing and placing back together since he was 13.
Floating over to the cockpit and taking a seat, he turned on the power and entered his password. He smiled and laughed as the screen showed that it was fully operational and ready to fly. The six years he had spent working on the Suit had finally paid off.
But deciding to head in for the night and to fly it out tomorrow, he headed back to his home and entered to see his adopted father just putting dinner on the table.
“Ah, just in time.” He smiled, walking over and taking a seat.
“You seem awfully cheerful today. Have a breakthrough with your machine today?”
“Yes! It’s finally finished. Can you believe it? After all these years and I finally finished it.”
The old man smiled. “I’m proud of you boy. Couldn’t be happier. But you should be careful when flying it around.”
“It’s okay. I’m going to take it over to the PLANTS tomorrow morning and get it registered so I can pilot it.”
“Ha, ha. So young and eager. You have lots of spirit. But remember about what I told you…”
“Yes, I know.” He trailed off, looking down at his dog tag necklace which had his name and birth date engraved on it. “Especially around Zaft, never to tell anyone of my last name.”
“That is why you’ll use mine.” The old man spoke. “It’s best if you remain hidden, especially in the years to come seeing as war has broken out again. Zaft has been on edge for quite some time now so be careful when going to the PLANTS.”
“This war…I promise that I will become a Mobile Suit pilot once I register it tomorrow. I’ll be the best one out there. And if anyone dares tries to threat our Sector…”
“Now, now, boy. Don’t get all your veins popping out of your head now. If anything were to happen to you, I don’t know if I could ever forgive myself.”
“Don’t say that, Yaro. You’ve taken care of me all my life. You taught me well. But I’m ready now to go out and see what’s out there. Like to go down to Earth…or try to find my real parents…if they are even out there.”
Yaro chuckled. “You have lots of time, boy, no need to rush into anything. You’ll see your parents one day when you’re ready. I’ll take you to them personally.”
“Really?” There was a sparkle in his eyes, which made him smile.
“Like I said, when the time is right. You are still young.”
“You keep saying that I’m young, but I’m 19 now, Yaro. I am ready.”
“Ha, ha, you’re not quite ready.” Finishing up, Yaro then stood from the table. “There is still much for you to learn, Ray. Your journey is only beginning.” Once said, Yaro then left the room, leaving Ray there at the table to finish.
Placing on a green uniform, the color of a neutral, and carrying his helmet, Ray paid his respects to the local friends on Sector 34 and to Yaro, then strapped himself in his newly finished reconstructed Mobile Suit and turned it on.
Yaro watched from the next room and smiled, seeing Ray finally grown up and now going on his own. Although going to the PLANTS was dangerous, especially for him, Yaro knew in his heart that he had to go and do this. To pursue his dream of becoming a Mobile Suit pilot.
As the hanger hatch opened, Ray took in a deep breath. He had been in space many times before but never in a Mobile Suit. Shuttle flights that him and Yaro took to the other sectors and once or twice to the PLANTS.
“Hatch open. All clear to proceed, Ray.” The instructor over his intercom spoke.
“Thanks. Tell Yaro that I’ll be back soon.” Smiling, he then stood up and launched off the rock and into space. Ray loved the feeling of being in the cockpit as he was in full control of the Suit. Space was an endless dark abyss but luckily for him, he knew exactly where he was, for he could see the PLANTS in the near distance.
With his oxygen level stable, radio and navigation all functioning perfectly, he was on his way. While continuing on, Ray couldn’t help but look over at the Earth, which was an even further distance away. But seeing it from outer space was truly a view that he could never forget. He had never been on Earth before and hoped that an opportunity soon would come for him to do so.
“What do we have here?” A Zaft Commander spoke in the bridge headquarters of the PLANTS. “A Mobile Suit?”
“It comes up on our scans as unregistered and unarmed. Looks to be an X class Suit.”
“An unregistered Suit and alone? Is this person trying to make a mockery out of Zaft by piloting that thing around?”
The solider then connected to his radio. “Come in X class Suit. You are currently entering Zaft PLANT territory. Please identify yourself.”
“My name is Ray Kousuke. Identification number 1435961. I am from Sector 34 requesting admission into the PLANTS and to speak with the representative Sato of the Zaft Mobile Suit Facility Department.” Ray spoke over the intercom.
“Ray Kousuke?” The Commander asked.
“His number is confirmed. Ray Kousuke. 19 years of age. Current residence of Sector 34 under the care of Yaro Kousuke. He’s a neutral, sir.”
“Something seems awfully suspicious. Grant him access and take him under custody to my office as soon as he lands.”
“Yes, sir.” Turning the com back on, he continued to speak to Ray. “Access granted, Mr. Kousuke. Please land in hanger port 4.”
Ray sighed and continued to the hanger. “Mr. Kousuke, eh?”
Upon landing, Ray powered the suit down and left the cockpit, leaving his helmet inside. Once on the ground, he was surrounded by Zaft soldiers with aimed guns. “W-What is going on?” He asked, raising his arms up.
“Ray Kousuke. You are to be taken under custody. Remain silent and follow our orders to avoid any violence.”
Ray was then handcuffed and taken upstairs of the military base where he was forced into a large room. At the other end stood a rather large desk and a man sitting behind it.
“Ray Kousuke?” He asked. “My name is Ryou Renaki. Commander of the sector 5 PLANTS entry and departure units.”
“Just what the hell is going on here!? Being treated like some common criminal. Is this how Zaft greets newcomers into the PLANTS!?”
“My apologies. But for some kid to be piloting a rather sordid Mobile Suit in its condition and for it to be unregistered too, it’s under Zaft law to conduct an investigation and hold the pilot until you can meet our standards…now Mr. Kousuke…you can either cooperate and we can finish this business quickly, or hinder the situation causing us both problems…”
