Preface

Preface

In a post-Katrina world, life was full of niceties. Every word was chosen specifically to cover darkness, to mislead and to disguise. The law made it that way. The United States government didn’t want to be associated with darkness, even in a world like this one, where darkness was rampant, lurking around every corner, waiting to devour those it had failed to infect. In the world of suits and politics, everything was neat and tidy and manageable. Danger was a figment of the imagination in the overactive minds of the public.

Rather than outwardly acknowledge the increasing chaos that overwhelmed the streets of America, the government hired people to deal with it in a timely, efficient, and discreet manner.

That’s where she came in.

Natalia St. James. Twenty-nine years old. Five-foot-six, one hundred and forty pounds. Occupation: Slayer. Synonymous with ‘assassin’.

She was a killer. They could dress it up any way they liked, but the fact remained that the U.S. government paid her to kill. They said it was necessary. For the good of humanity, certain populations had to be kept under control. Part of her suspected they were paranoid, but, still, she did what they told her, and she did it well. Very well.

More than that, she liked it.
