A stranger came upon my way

A smile plastered on his face

He asked how I was doing that day

And stayed talking in that same merry way

He introduced himself and asked for my name

Originally I thought this was just a game

Satisfy your curiosity by learning about this new face

Then when familiar forget you even met in the first place

Yet to my surprise you weren’t that kind of guy

You were kind and seemed truthful- no lies-

A real friendship as if you didn’t quite know any others exist

You included me; unlike those who excluded me

We never became close friends but I knew if I needed anything you’d be there for me

In the beginning I misjudged you

You had me learn to never assure people

You would always laugh because we never had anything in common

But that I was interesting to come upon

You told me I should open up more

I had a voice; I should be heard

You will never know how truly big your small gesture was but I thank you because within that time I learned more from you than you may ever know

You’re a good person; a good friend

Whether you think so or not

Because you reached out to me

It’s opened my eyes for me to do the same

I never thought to do so before

But now I’ve become more active

I have a voice and I’m ready to be heard

Now I work towards doing what you did to me-

Lend a hand to someone who needs it

I’m there for someone who feels like they have no one

I walk up to them a with smile on my face

I stay and talk going about my way

Then I introduce myself and ask for their name

I want someone to feel what I felt-

To feel good; to know someone cares; someone wants to hear you- know you

Everyone deserves a chance to be heard

Who knows it may open doors

Sometimes that’s where friendship lures

Friendships are meant to be unpredictable

So you take a risk not knowing the outcome but if you never take that risk you’re refusing a chance for your voice to be heard

You’re letting opportunity pass you by
