Kaddish

(One Year Later)

She sat at her window staring into the setting sun.

Shani was sitting in her room remembering everything that had happened in the past year. Soon after she was hospitalised, Mikel had gone missing. They still hadn’t found him and it had been a year already. Shani shuddered at the thought, Mikel was dead. There was no doubt about it.

But who did it?

She should know how to deal with it now but she still doesn’t.

We’re all in too deep and now I can’t get out.

She knows what Mossad is like; she knows everything that could happen. And yet her heart aches whenever she thinks of Mikel. A shrill ringing noise interrupts her thoughts.

“Shalom.” She answers.

“Shani, they’ve found Mikel.” Her father’s voice floats through the phone.

Shani was speechless; she stared into space in shock.

“He’s dead Shani.” Her father said more gently.

Shani snaps out of her reverie, “About time.”

“His funeral is in a week and his parents want you to speak at it.”

Shani swallows a lump that formed in her throat, “I can’t.”

“Why?” it was such a simple question with such a complicated answer.

“I just can’t, it wouldn’t be right for him.” She doesn’t recognise her own voice now; it comes out all hoarse and gravelly.

“If you insist,” her father says gravely, “Shalom.”

“Le’ hitra’ ot Aba.”

Shani hangs up the phone with a heavy heart, she knew that the chances of Mikel being alive were extremely thin but she couldn’t help having the slightest bit of hope. And now it was all shattered.

Daoud was being increasingly friendly towards her after their first meeting. He was supportive and knew when not to say anything. He had been her ‘rock’. Although her parents disapproved, Shani had started seeing Daoud in secret. No-one but Ziva knew. Although she had a sneaking suspicion that Ari suspected what was going on.

She heard the sound of rocks being thrown at her window and got up and walked softly towards the window.

Daoud was standing there with a smile on his face.

Shani opened the window, “Daoud, what are you doing here?”

“Hello to you too,”

“Aba will have your head if he finds out you’re here.”

“Come on.” He gestured with his arms.

Shani grabbed a pair of her shoes from her wardrobe and jumped out of her window, landing gracefully on the grass.

“Where are we going?”

Daoud hands her a motorcycle helmet, “You’ll see.”

She follows him to his motorcycle and shakes her hair loose before putting on the helmet and getting on behind him.

He revs the engine and they speed off down the street, swirling up piles of leaves and such behind them. Shani takes one last look behind her before Daoud turns the corner.

He feels the thrumming of the motorbike beneath him and Shani’s arms around his waist. He doesn’t want to hurt her and yet Hamas want him to become a martyr, to die for a cause he doesn’t even believe in. Sometimes he doesn’t even know who he is meant to fool, whose side he’s really on.

She sits behind him; it feels like she’s flying through the air.

Her impatient side gets the better of her, “Where are we going Daoud?”

“You’ll see.”

Shani gives an impatient sigh.

They ride in a comfortable silence until the motorbike starts slowing down and finally stopping in front of a warehouse.

Shani was a little confused, “Here?”

“Looks can be deceiving.”

Shani shivered in anticipation, “What made you so poetic today?”

Daoud just laughs and takes her by the hand, leading her into the warehouse.

When she steps into the warehouse, she sees a table in the centre of the room. On the table are two sets of cutlery, glasses and plates of food. The warehouse is dimly lit by candles.

Shani smiles at Daoud, “Thank you.” She whispers before pulling him into a hug which soon became a very heated kiss.

When they finally break away, Daoud gestures towards the table, “Shall we?”

“We shall.” Shani replies laughing slightly.

Shani awoke very late the next morning. She was exhausted from her night with Daoud, and then sneaking into the house – smelling suspiciously of sex – via her bedroom window. She was sure her father had heard the thump, if he was home that night which was highly unlikely.

She looked at her alarm clock and groaned; if she didn’t get up now then her mum would get suspicious. Even though she was twenty-one, she still lived with her parents because she was sent on long missions that could last from a few weeks to years and she needed someone to take care of her things and make sure that they didn’t deteriorate.

With another groan she got out of bed and started her usual morning regime.

Thank God I don’t have to work today.

Shani was getting more and more uninterested in her work at Mossad. Tasks that she would’ve enjoyed before her ‘incident’ didn’t catch her attention or motivate her like they would have. She had considered resigning but knew that they wouldn’t approve.

Daoud strapped the bomb to his chest with his heart beating wildly. This one wasn’t equipped with a timer because Hamas though that he wouldn’t need persuading. He and two others were to detonate in an Israeli marketplace. After being sent out with their ‘leader’s’ blessing Daoud followed the others.

Shani walked along the busy street looking for a sign of Daoud, she spotted him in a busy marketplace.

“Daoud!” she called out.

Daoud turned around and saw Shani waving with a smile on her face. She ran up to him and was about to hug him when Daoud stopped her.

Shani’s smile quickly faded when she saw the imprint of a bomb under his jacket.

“This wasn’t part of your mission.” She whispered softly.

“I’m sorry Shani,” Daoud gave her a chaste kiss, “But this isn’t what it seems.”

“Then what is it?” Shani demanded.

“I can’t tell you, now run before it’s too late.” Daoud warned.

Shani took a deep breath and ran without turning back as Daoud and two others martyred themselves in the Israeli market.

She collapsed in an alleyway sobbing until she felt someone’s hand on her shoulder.

“Shh, it’s okay.” Ari said soothingly.

Shani allowed herself to fall into his comforting arms.

When her tears were all shed she mumbled a hoarse ‘Thank you’ before getting up and leaving.

Ari watched her walk away and wondered why he let her go again.

He walks up to the back door of her house, her family isn’t here. Her father was most likely in the marketplace with all the other senior ranking Mossad officers and her mother and sisters were most likely visiting all their friends and relatives, offering condolences where needed. He knew that Shani never was one to do that, she hated false hope and reassurances. He also knew that the chances of finding Shani at home were slim as well.

She was sitting at her desk filing out a form to resign from Mossad, she hadn’t been able to stand it and today was the last straw for her. Her pen paused above the paper while she thought of Daoud yet again. She was shaken out of her thoughts by a floorboard creaking outside her bedroom door.

He quietly opened her bedroom door and suddenly she had a shot trained between his eyes.

“Daoud?” she asks in bewilderment.

He slowly walked towards her and manoeuvres the gun away from him.

“I thought you were dead.”

“So does everyone else,” he admitted, “I wanted to get out of Mossad and lead a normal life.”

She looks at him wistfully, “So you fake your own death.”

It was more of a statement than a question but he answers anyway.

“Then why are you here?”

“I want you to come with me.” He cringes, waiting for her outburst; it was a huge thing to ask of her.

Instead of harming him, she flings her arms around him like a little girl, “Yes!”

She finds a small bag and packs a few essentials as well as all the money she owns and her box full of lucky charms. This time she adds a photo of her family to the box and a photo of her two sisters.

After filling out the rest of her resignation form, she leaves quietly through the back door with Daoud. Sitting in front of the house and partially hidden by a tree is a new motorbike, registered to a fake ID.

She shakes her hair out the same way before putting the helmet on and sitting behind him. He revs the engine and they speed off down the street into the unknown. This time, Shani doesn’t look back.

(Two Months Later)

Her world flashes before her. Images of Mikel, Eschel and Michel lying dead flash in front of her eyes. Followed by Tali, Ziva and Ariela. Last is Daoud, lying there motionless with blood pooling beneath him.

Shani wakes up, her mouth frozen in a silent scream. Daoud holds her tighter to him, burying his face in her hair.

“Shh, it’s okay, I’m here.” He whispered calmingly into her hair.

Shani shakes her mind of the mental images and settles back down to sleep, “Ani Ohevet Otcha.”

“Ani Ohev Otach.” He whispers back.

He kisses her forehead and they gently drift to sleep, listening to the waves crashing in the endless ocean.

So the little blue button is calling...
