The Ledge

October 2007 Lorna Dwyer

Hanging onto this ledge

I realise what I was missing.

It wasn’t friends,

It wasn’t family.

It was someone to understand

Letting go of this ledge

Is so easy, too easy.

Everyone stood on the sidelines,

Just out of reach

Just that little bit safer

I wanted someone here.

Someone to breathe

The way I breathe.

Someone to cry

The way I cry.

Someone who understood

Where I was

What reason led me here

Someone to understand

Why I held onto this ledge.

Hanging here

Looking at friends and family

I see it all.

They were on the sidelines

Never here with me.
