Dedicated to my Starshine.

The other day,
as I read your letter aloud,
I heard the sound of my own name,
and I hated it.
It sounded so plain
and dull
and boring,
and for a moment,
I wished I was something more interesting –
Cassandra,
and Cleopatra,
and Beatrice,
and also Guinivere.

But then I tried again,
with your voice instead of mine,
and then my name sounded like a symphony.

I woke up at three in the morning
to write this all down.
I don’t know what to call it.
It’s too vibrant for a name.

Author's Note: Many lines in this poem were inspired by The Fantasticks, the play I'm in right now. Credit for those lines goes to the playwrights of that amazing show.
