Finally, a break. I had been working my ass off all day in this hot diner. All I wanted to do is go home and relax.

Most may not call waitressing a real job, but with me being a college student, this was the closest thing to a real job that I was going to get, and it was no joke. No worries though. This job was only temporary until I could find a real job with my degree in journalism.

Writing was the only thing that I was really good at. Why not major in it?

"Mia?" I looked up from sweeping and met the cheerful face of my co-worker Alissa. "Mia, why don't you head home. I'll close tonight. You look tired."

You think?

The diner had been packed full of starving civilians all day.

"Oh it's ok. I don't mind." I lied. Actually I did mind...a lot. I hated the diner, I hated night shift, and I most definitely hated closing.

I know, I know, I complain too much.

"Oh, I insist." she said maintaining her smile.

Alissa had to be the happiest person that I've ever met, and that’s really not an exaggeration. I bet if some random person walked up to her, punched her in the jaw, and then started cursing her out for no good reason, Alissa would just look at them and smile, while listening to every word.

"Well, ok." I replied. No use in arguing about it. I put the broom away and the trash I collected into the garbage, grabbed my coat and purse, and exited the diner.

I walked home humming a made up tune as I stared up at the sky. The sky was significantly clear, the moon bright and full. It was undoubtedly beautiful, and all the more reason for me to stare up at it without looking at where I was going.

Yes, that’s my excuse for bumping right into a rock hard wall. I stumbled back and tried not to fall. It wasn’t really working. Before I could hit the ground though, two strong arms gracefully caught me.

I looked up. My eyes met two blue ones.

So I didn’t bump into a wall. I bumped into a chest. That's even more embarrassing.

My savior stood me up all the while watching me closely. I straightened my clothes, refusing to turn my gaze from his. He was incredibly handsome. I found myself having to snap myself out of a stare by looking away.

He responded with a gentle smile. "You have to be more careful." he said.

I smiled weakly, trying to hide my embarrassment. "Yea, sorry." I replied while looking down at my feet.

I chose that moment to walk away.

When I was finally in my small apartment, I collapsed onto the couch. I was so damn tired. I hadn't even bothered to turn the lights on. I closed my eyes and rubbed my head. My body was desperately craving rest.

I opened my eyes for a second and caught a blinking light across the room.

Someone left me a message. I feel loved.

With a sigh, I dragged myself from the couch and pressed the little red button on the answering machine. Tamara's voice immediately blared through the room.

"Hey girl!" she screamed through the loud music in the background. "Um...Lana and Brian decided to throw me a surprise birthday party. Isn't that great?!"

Yippee.

"I don't know why they didn’t tell you." she continued. I laughed. I certainly knew why. Tamara had this way of getting information out of me if she thought something was up, and I fell for it every time.

"Anyways, I want you to come. Please, please, please! I know you’re working tonight and you’re probably tired, but I really want you to come. I have a surprise for you!"

Surprise for me? I thought it was HER birthday.

"You know that any party that I'm at lasts till at least 4 am, so I figured if you get an hour’s sleep you'd be refreshed and ready to hang out for a few hours. C'mon please Mia, it’s my birthday. Well, I gotta get back to the party. My groupies are starting to get restless." she laughed as I smiled and rolled my eyes. "See you later!"

I sighed. She must have known I was going to just give in and go. I was really just planning on taking a long nice shower, slipping on one of those oversized t-shirts that I stole from my older brother, eating a bowl of cereal, and hitting the sack. But life is never that simple is it?

I smiled. I couldn’t possibly turn down Tamara's invite. It was way too tempting. I had tomorrow off so I could sleep in all day if I wanted to. That would certainly make up for a night of hard work and partying. My decision was made.

I was suddenly excited. I immediately ran to the bathroom and jumped into the shower.

When I finished getting dressed, I grabbed my coat and darted out the door. It was only around 12:30 so I still had time.

I walked out of my apartment building, and headed down the street. Tamara's house was only about three blocks down so the walk wasn't long.

I walked in silence listening to the click of my heels. As I neared the house, I could already hear the music bumping.

I wonder how long before the neighbors call the cops?

I walked into the house only to be met by a large drunken crowd. My eyes lit up as I watched everyone dance and laugh, just having a good time. I always loved to see people have fun.

I began to push my way through the noisy crowd, determined to find the birthday girl. After all I was here for her...well, her and the surprise.

I spotted her in the corner talking to Maya, with a cup in her hand. She noticed me and ran up to meet me in the middle of the floor.

"Mia!" she screamed as she drew me into an embrace. "Glad you could make it."

"Um...yea, well it is your birthday and you wanted me to come so...here I am!"

"Stop lying...it had nothing to do with me. You wanted to know what the surprise was."

She knew me all too well. "Yea...about that. What is it?" I asked. Curiosity was stabbing me in the foot.

"Guess who's here."

"Who?"

"Devin!" she squealed.

"Devin?! Are you serious?" I asked. I hadn’t seen Devin since high school. I guess you could say that we were together, we just never made anything official. After graduation when it was time for college, he went to Florida to some university, and I stayed here...in New York. I hadn't heard from him in two years, so it was sort of a surprise to know that I was in the same building as the guy that I was once infatuated with.

"Yea, I just saw him talking to Brian over there..." Tamara said pointing to the hallway near the stairs. "Hm...I don’t really know where he could be now, but why don’t you go ahead and look for him."

"Um...no I'm going to be a wallflower tonight. Maybe he'll find me."

My eyes caught someone approaching Tamara from behind.

"Would you like to dance?" he screamed in her ear. Tamara turned, looked at him, then at me again.

"Well, Mia, you go ahead and be a wallflower ok? I'm going to have fun. C'mon." she said dragging the guy to the middle of the dance floor/living room. I watched as she grinded up against him to the music making him grin.

As the night drew on, I remain in the same spot observing everyone else have fun. I just wasn't up for dancing as I thought I might have been. Numerous friends and associates approached me just to say hey, or to make small talk. I conformed, but soon enough they realized that I just wanted to be left alone for a while.

A couple of guys even asked me to dance, but I turned them all down. I had to be the party pooper.

I went to take a sip of my X-Rated, and noticed that I had drunk all of it. So I peeled myself off of the wall, and headed towards the kitchen for a refill. I went to the sink, poured out the ice, and then rinsed the cup out.

All of a sudden, I felt two arms wrap themselves around my waist. I almost jumped out of my skin.

"Miss me?" a deep voice whispered in my ear.

Wait...I know that voice.

I turned my head around and saw Devin.

"Devin!" I exclaimed. I turned all the way around and gave him the biggest hug that I could muster. "How have you been?"

"Great. What about you?"

Devin and I talked for what seemed like hours, catching up, laughing, and reminiscing. It seemed as if Devin was doing really good for himself. He was still in college, though he had transferred to Albany State, majoring in Psychology and playing college football. That explains the well toned body.

I know I was wrong for looking, but can you really blame me? The guy was hot. He had to have moved on by now though, right? There's no way that he would wait two years for me. He probably had some better well rounded chick by now who was practically kissing his feet. Maybe not though. I mean a girl can hope right?

We ended up taking a walk to the park to get away from all the noise, and for a little privacy. As we walked the trail through the park I stared up at the sky again. It was weird being able to actually see stars in New York, the city of pollution. You see everything in New York, just not stars.

I continued to study the sky and noticed that there was this giant cloud, the only one in the sky, covering the moon. Weird.

Devin stopped and drew me closer to him. He looked up at the sky to see what was fascinating me.

"It's so beautiful." I muttered.

"Yea, almost as beautiful as you." he replied.

I looked at him and smiled. Yea, I know it was corny, but that line made me feel like a damn top model or something.

He looked at me and smiled back. We leaned in for a kiss, and that's when it happened.

My life changed forever.

A/N: OK so this is going to start out as you typical cliched werewolf story but trust me...its totally different. Please review...
