Personification of an Abandoned School
Darkened hallways, musty corridors
Stain’d carpets now are veiled.
Shadows flutter, free at last,
From flourescent glow so pale.
Chalk dust settles, walls do moan,
That no one treats them with respect.
Now full of wounds, they tell a tale
Of being poked and smudged and pricked.
Stainless steel gleams with pride,
Recalling scents of stale food.
Glue sticks shrivel, useless now,
Lying in their drawers to brood.
Desks stand tall and stiff and hard
Empty of all things but dust.
Faintly creaking, metal legs,
Begin to slowly, softly rust.
Papers rustle, markers roll
As wind gusts through a broken pane.
On the floor lie shards of glass,
Waiting to be fixed again.
In the corner, math books sit,
Planning to exact revenge.
Back and forth, a door does swing,
Squeaking on a rusty hinge.
Time will tell of days gone by
As reddened leaves begin to fall.
But autumn comes, and through those doors,
No laughing children come at all.
