Chapter 1
It is pleasant here. A little cold, but its not bad. I love this time of year. The leaves are changing; the days are slowly becoming shorter. Which makes it hard on mother, but nice for the rest of us. We get to sleep more – which is a plus for us, but the best part is that we don't have to go to school for very long. I wished I could do that now. Of course I could, but the woods and my parents and home are gone. That was years ago though.
A time when the workingman worked for himself, was his own man, and owned his own land. Now a day's women have more freedom. They can vote and raise children on their own. Everything has changed. Including me. I mean I haven't physically changed, but enough so that nothing will ever be the same. I feel like I'm stuck in the past and the world is passing me by and no matter how hard I try I can't grab hold of it.
"Arabella, Arabella." Justine called sweetly in my ear.
Justine is one of the housemaids. Or in this case 'ladies in waiting'. She has a kind face. One that doesn't fit for this life. Her pale skin is as white as snow and looks as fragile as tissue paper. In truth she looks like she's about to break. Above all of that she's amazingly beautiful. Her hair is an amazingly brilliant brown color with blonde highlights that looked unnatural.
She stared at me waiting for my answer.
"What!" This is not my day and I'm not even 'awake" yet. UUUGGGG!!!!! Why must this always happen?
"I was just wondering if you wanted to come with us, since well your one of us too. Unless of course you'd rather sleep like those mortals."
"Um, Justine, thanks for the offer, but I'd rather stay here and sleep – especially since I'm the one who still goes to school."
"Oh yeah, that's right. You look like your 17 when really your 124."
"125 actually."
"Oh, really? Since when?"
"Since last night at midnight. Now can I go back to sleep?"
"Alright. Goodnight… our future queen."
What did she say? Did she say 'future queen'? I jump out of bed and quickly dress, knowing that if I didn't get downstairs before they left I would never get to talk to Magda – the head of our family or as everyone calls her our queen. For years she's been talking about a successor – I the least interested. Everyone did impressive and flashy moves – which cost most of them in the end. But they did what they could to be seen and praised. I guess she finally made her decision. I wonder who the poor guy is?
If anything, everyone would be in the great hall getting ready for the hunt. I walked down the silent halls toward the houses grand hall in our Victorian Mansion, listening to the growing sound of Magda's speech. The great hall was full of the family. Magda stood at the front, giving the speech about how one day we will rule and how no one will question our strength, wisdom, and power. And my favorite of all – Go out and achieve what you must. Bring back no survivors – unless they are to become one of us.
Chapter 2
"Oh William. What will we tell your parents?"
"We will tell them that I fell madly in love with you, and at the moment I saw you I knew you had to be mine."
Taking his hand, he cupped my chin and tilted my head up. Everything in me stopped. My heart faltered. And then he kissed me. A kiss one could not forget. Lips wanting and strong. When we released he stared longingly in my eyes. We broke our gaze and he grabbed my hand and walked me through the forest. It was our favorite place. It still is for me. As long as the forest is there, William is there.
Something moved behind us. Something's wrong. William's gone. I'm alone and then pain. Massive, excruciating pain. And then nothing, just a face – and that weren't enough. Wind blowing, teeth bearing. Screaming, crying, and darkness.
I start with a gasp. Sweat beading down my face. My sheets in disarray. And there is Magda and Justine in the corner watching me with hopeful eyes.
"Arabella, I must talk with you." Magda said in a commanding tone.
"On what subject?" I asked skeptically.
"On the matter of our queens decision."
"Oh. So who'd she pick?"
"You" they both said in unison. So perfect it was like they had practiced.
"What?!?!?!?!?!?!"
"Bella, I chose you because you're the only one who could do the job. You're fair and just and kind. You also think about everything before you act. But most of all you set yourself a goal. You have yet to achieve it, but you will in time."
"Are you speaking of my goal to find and kill the thing that changed me?"
"Well, yes. Unless of course, you have another goal in which you haven't spoken about."
"No I haven't"
"Good, maybe you should start thinking about a new goal now, since you are going to take my place as the head of the family!"
"What makes you think I'll except?"
"You'll except because, well, because Magda said so."
"And also because you know that if you become the head of the household you'll become so much closer to finding out who changed you."
"How did you ever figure that I would want to be in charge of the very thing I hate?"
"Well, for one I figured that you would want all of the 'family' to look for the 'culprit' and two, I knew that everyone would have to go through you for anything."
We exchanged quick glances – Magda to me, me to Magda, and Justine to both of us.
"I expect you in my chamber at 8 o'clock. You will do and wear what I tell you to do or wear. Understand?"
"Yes."
"Good."
And of course, that was the end of that. Magda and Justine walked out of my chamber with the air of winning. No matter what you do you can never beat Magda – or Justine when Magda's around. I guess I should just accept the fact that I had to become the leader of the clan.
Chapter 3
8:oo P.M. – Magda's chamber
I arrive at Magda's chamber to be push, pulled, tugged, bruised, washed, combed, and dressed by 'Magda's girls'. Magda's girls are all of the women of the clan who wanted to become the next leader. Usually they go about their work speedily, but tonight they do not. Maybe they were just doing that so they could show off their skills. Too bad, they would be better at leading that I could ever possibly be.
"Tonight will be the first day of the rest of your life, Bella."
"Yeah. That's what you said last time."
"How would you like to be presented?"
"I would like to be presented as Arabella Rose Swan, if it's not to much to ask?"
"Nothing is never to much to ask for, from the leader. It's only too much when you're below our status and rank. Take Justine for example, she will always be under me, and if she asked me to kill you I wouldn't allow it. But if I asked her to kill you – well you get the picture. Nothing is too much to ask for. Are you ready?" Magda stated and asked.
"Let's just get this over with."
"That's the spirit!"
We walk out into the landing overlooking the grand ballroom – which is also the front room of the mansion – but everyone else calls it 'The Lounge'.
"Magda Marie Sinclair." Magda entered the room and elegantly waited for me to enter.
"Arabella Rose Swan. Arabella Rose Swan." He called my name. What the Fuck! I don't want to be the ruler of the devil's scum!
"Arabella Rose Swan!" He was getting irritated. I might as well walk out.
I step out onto the landing looking out at all of our, I mean, my clan. I winced at that thought. They show that they've expected me as their new ruler, but I see all the hate and distaste they have for me. It radiates off their skin in torrents. I think I'm going to faint.
Then before I can even take my next breath, Magda's there. With her hand on mine, guiding me down the grand staircase to be welcomed by my clan. My clan. No matter how much I say it to myself they will never be MY clan. I will never be their queen. I hate them and yet I have to rule them?
Bile rises into my mouth. I now know what they expect of me, but they will never receive it. They will no longer kill. They will no longer feed. That will be my law. I have more important things to do besides looking after the clan.
8:oo A.M.
Shit! I'm late! School starts in 30 minutes! Good thing I can run extremely fast. But I have to drive to school. Oh well, time to us is nothing.
8:20 A.M
Sigh of relief. I made it. And of course Jade is standing right in front of the school. Waiting for me. I wish he would just give up. It would never work. I've been telling him for months and he still won't believe it. I guess he just doesn't understand. Or just doesn't know the meaning of no. It's to be expected unfortunately. He's lovesick. Now all I need is for him to be lovesick about somebody else. It won't be easy, but I'll try.
I park the racer red Lamborghini I got, in my spot, grab my stuff and start walking towards the school.
Jade instinctively takes his place by my side. Every day it's the same thing. He gets ready for the day. Then he goes out front and waits.
When we start walking to class he starts his normal chitchat. I don't care for it, but I know he enjoys it, so I let him. Pretty much I put myself on Autopilot.
We have first period together – Physics, with Mr. Jackson. No one really likes him. For that matter no one listens to him at all.
Second period is World Religions with Mrs. Jones. This class is my favorite. We learn about everything – including superstitions.
Third period is Spanish III and unfortunately I have Senora Spore. She lived in Spain for three years, but I don't like the class. I've learned every language – in which I'm fluent in all and this is supposedly the easiest language and I hate it.
Fourth is Varsity Drama (at least for the first semester). VD is competitive acting. You go to different public schools and compete with other High School students. I find and cut all my pieces and I still can't beat this one girl. It's probably because my coach likes her so much. I was talking with one of my teammates – Jenna – and I said the only reason she got good rankings and lead roles is because that son of a bitch has his head in his dick. No one likes her. She sucks ass when it comes to acting. But I'm going to stop before I get nasty.
For the second semester I have General P.E. This is the sweatiest class you will ever have. And the only reason I take it is because I need 1.5 credits to graduate. Ug.
My fifth period class id AP US History. I love this class. Our teacher – Coach – is straight up with us. He doesn't say anything that's bogus. The other reason I love this class is because I grew up when history was being made.
Sixth period is English with Dr. Iris. She's a teacher who walks to the beat of her own drum. I could never get tired of this class.
Seventh period (and my last period of the day – thank God) is Pre Cal with Mr. Harold. I hate this class. I need say nothing more.
Jade has four of these classes with me and he sits directly behind me in each one. Unfortunately at this moment he's trying to get my attention to see if I want to 'hang out' this weekend. When will he give up?
Rrrrriiiinnnggg!!!!!!
Thank God! Oh wait, never mind that last thought. I don't trust God anymore. I mean I go to mass and pray the rosary, but after what's happened it's hard to forgive. I know that's what God wants but it's not the same when you're not human.
I gather my things and rush out the door – running to get as far away from Jade as possible. I get to my car and start peeling out of the parking lot, when I see something move very – no extremely quickly toward Jade. Oh God! It's Justine. What's she doing here? After a few moments I notice what she's wearing. A tight leather bodice– black, black leather pants, black leather boots with buckles and around her waist, a belt with a holster for a sword. Oh God, she's here to kill!
I quickly turn off the engine and walk towards the school. Making damn sure to watch my speed. Justine looks like a model standing there. Guys stop in their tracks causing the girls to trip and fall. This is what made her dangerous. She was beautiful and strong – a bad combination.
When I reach her, she's already started up a conversation with Jade. She's pulling him into her web. And all those guys think he's so lucky. If only they knew.
"Hello Justine. Jade."
"Oh! Hello Arabella." Justine said.
"Uh, uh, h-hello Airy."
"What are you doing here Justine?"
"I'm here to take you home. I thought I was going to have to tack you down, but luckily you came to me." She said in a merry tone. Irking me more every second.
"Well, I'm here now, so lets go. Bye Jade."
"Ok, nice to meet you Jeremy." Justine says with a wink and a smile.
"It's Jade. Bye Arabella. See you tomorrow."
I turned my back and waved while I pushed Justine toward the parking lot and into my car.
"What are you really doing here?"
"I figured since you're the new ruler of the clan, that I should check out some new people to hunt or change, for that matter. I knew how much you disliked people here so I just thought I'd…"
"You're never allowed to come here again!!! Do you understand! Never!"
"Yes. I understand."
"Good. Buckle up."
As soon as we got out of the school parking lot I slam my foot on the gas and change gears. Justine's face goes from calm to sear shock and fear. For a vampire with super speed and strength she sure does scare easily.
"Must you drive so quickly?!?!"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Well, one I'm a vampire and I like speed. Two it's a Lamborghini. And three you were hinting that something was going on at the mansion."
"Ok you caught me. There is something going on. Gerard is here."
"Oh joy."
"I'm not finished Gerard came to see you. To be you're… to be your husband."
"Oh God. I can't be married. I'm only 17 years old to those people. They'll start poking around. Wondering what's going on."
"Oh it won't matter, because nobody will know. Plus you won't be married until after you graduate."
"I don't want to be married to him!! What if I fall for someone else? What if I want him to rule with me?"
"Like whom?"
"No one."
Chapter 4
The doors burst open like there was a tornado crashing through the house. Gerard did like to make an entrance. The whole clan was there, with Magda and I up on the landing, looking on above, as though we were birds watching our prey.
Gerard only paid visits when he wanted something. And he never came without an entourage. I could kill him. He's one of the worst vampires you would ever have to deal with and he's not even that strong. I took him down a couple of months ago at our last meeting. Of course that's when he looked at me with hate in his eyes and I with fire. I look at him the same way, but he looks at me with adoration. To make me fall for him I suppose. It's not going to work.
"Welcome Gerard. So nice to see you again."
"Thank you. And it's so nice to see you again Magda."
Good. He doesn't/hasn't/won't see me yet. I intimidate him.
"Hello Gerard. I heard you were coming." I say as I step out of the darkness.
"Oh. Hello Arabella. I didn't see you there. My. You look even lovelier than the last time I saw you. You must be an amazing vampire by now."
"Well now that you mention it, I am, but I'm also an amazing human being."
"Ah. Well my dear…"
"Don't call me your dear! I'm not yours!!"
"My dear you're human life and existence has long been expired. You only act like them so that they, the humans that is, won't get suspicious and come snooping around."
That one struck me. Hard. He's going to get it! I smile sweetly and answer the best I can.
"So, what has brought you here, to grace us with your presence?"
"I'm glad you asked. I'm here because I heard a rumor that Magda has chosen a successor. I came to offer a hand and maybe become a steward for them."
"Well, she doesn't need your help."
"What? How do you know she won't need it?"
"Because I'm the chose successor and I don't need your help!"
"Well. Ok. But that's not my only reason. I also came to offer my hand in marriage to the successor."
"I don't except."
He bows lowly and leaves. A huge weight lifting off my chest, but still hovering over me. He would be back, and very soon. I excuse myself and walk silently back to my room.
Walking down those familiar walls I felt numb. The walls shutter with anticipation knowing Gerard would be back and I in turn will be his wife. What they don't know is, I won't be here. Poor Gerard turned down twice in one day – and by the same person too, no less.
I reach my room and shut my door silently. "Hello Justine. What have you come to talk about?"
"Um, uh, how did you know I was in here?"
I raised my pointer finger and tapped my temple.
"Oh. Well, I came to talk to you about your outburst. It was not wise to turn him down so quickly."
"Justine, I made my decision. Besides, I don't need him."
"If you don't want him, you know he'll keep coming back to win you."
"Yes, I know that." But he can't have me if he already has someone else. "Justine, you like Gerard, correct?"
"Yes, yes I do. Why do you ask?"
"Well, since I don't want him and because I'm becoming the head of the clan. I was wondering if I could give him to you."
"Really?!?"
"Yes. Why not? Your just as beautiful and as talented as me, why not he marry you?"
"Oh, thank you! …But how are we going to get him to accept me?"
"A bit of trickery actually. When he comes back, I will tell him that I changed my mind. Of course he will ask me when I want to marry and I will say right away. While I'm discussing with Gerard, you will be getting prepared. Make sure your wearing a long veil, one that's thick. Remember he can't look upon his bride until after he kisses her. Now go and send word that I would like to speak with him."
"Yes, Arabella."
And while she walks down the aisle I'll be far-gone. He'll be trapped and he can never come after me again.
Chapter 4
Justine entered the house of Gerard – named after his father. Who was, of course, full of himself. Like father like son has a whole new meaning. She walked up to the first guard and asked to speak to Gerard. This guard was a foot taller than her and was completely muscular. He could have been a body builder in a past life. He intimidated her and he knew it.
"Why do you want to speak with Gerard?" he asked in a surly voice.
"My business is for Gerard and I to know."
"Oh, well, then excuse me. Go right ahead." He patronized her as he did a slight bow and gave a little motion with his arm to tell her to go by.
Justine walked along the corridor with the guard keeping in full step. They finally reach Gerard's door. The guard knocks on it and waited for a reply.
"What do you want Barcoff?"
"Justine is here on account of personal business."
"Really?" He turned toward her "Personal business? On what account?"
"On the account of Arabella."
"Barcoff, I don't need your assistance. Go back to your post." He said quickly as he began shooing Barcoff out the door.
Shutting the door he turns and gives Justine a fright. "So, you come on matters of Arabella? What does she want?"
"She wants to apologize and to take you up on your offer. But she wishes to do this in person. And for me not to leave until you agree to come." At this a smile filled Gerard's smug face, giving him the look of the Devil. The ends curled up and gave him a sinister look – one that no one would want to deal with.
"She wishes for me to be her king? Interesting. Justine, go to Arabella and tell her I accept and to prepare for tonight."
"Tonight?!?!?"
"Yes tonight. Justine, tonight Arabella and I shall be married." Justine just stood there and started. "Well what are you waiting for?"
Arabella paced the length of her room. Thinking over her plan. Irritated by not knowing, she picked up her black cell phone and when straight to Jade's number.
"Hello." Jade's voice answered, sounding confused and groggy. Arabella realized this is the first time she had ever called him in the 4 years that they had known each other.
"Jade. Is it ok if I stay with you for a while?"
"Um, sure. My parents are gone for the week so we should be ok. Do you want me to come get you?"
"No, I know how to get there."
"How do you know how to get to my house? You've never been here?"
"I looked up your address on ."
"Oh ok, well I'll see you soon. Bye Airy."
"Bye Jade."
Suddenly Justine bursts into the room with an expression of shear happiness. Which only adds to her beauty. Arabella just stares at her, while she dances in her own giddiness.
"Well…?"
"He said that you should prepare for a wedding."
"Good. Everything's going…"
"I'm not through yet. He said to prepare for a wedding…. Tonight."
A smile broke out across Arabella's face. One of content and pure enjoyment. "Justine, tell Magda. She'll be pleased. Also tell her that I only want you to help me prepare and no one else. I will take her blessing, but only before I get ready."
"Ok."
"Justine, bring you're favorite dress and veil."
"Yes, Arabella."
"Justine, It's Airy from now on."
"Yes, Airy."
Chapter 5
Airy sat in her room letting Magda's maids prepare her for the blessing. She sat there in silence, face blank and eyes beginning to shine over. While a few of the maids moved her hair from its normal position into a beautiful up-do, the rest begin the work on her makeup. After all that was said and done, her dress was brought out to her. They pulled the intricate laces tight.
She walked silently down the hall to the grand ballroom. The great ebony doors opened at her approach. Magda sat at the front of the room in her huge forest green velvet thrown. Her red hair looking as if it were a blaze, and her green eyes boring into the empty pit that would have been Arabella's soul. She kneeled down before Magda and took the blessing.
"May your love and life together be that of what is intened. May you rule with love in your heart. And may you love as you have never loved before. You are eternally bound." Magda bellowed, so that all could hear.
Arabella rose and walked out, showing no emotion as she did so. Many of those present thought it strange, for others who had gone through this ceremony were smiling, crying, or doing both afterwards. Before exciting she announced, "I will prepare in my room. No one is to disturb me except for Justine, who will help me prepare and who is also my 'Maid of Honor," is that understood?"
"Yes Arabella." The crowd answered.
The grand ballroom was beautifully decorated in yards of silk in an array of colors – black, purple, red, green, yellow – you get the point. All of the guests are dressed in their most spectacular outfits. Women in silk ball gowns and the men in tuxedos. Everyone – both from Magda and Gerard's court – were sitting and chatting excitedly. Over the midst of the noise you could hear the beginning of the "Wedding March" play. Everyone stands just as the doors open to reveal the bride in the whitest dress you have ever seen.
As she processes down the aisle, all of the people in the audience shower her with red and white rose petals. Silently the crowd gave their congratulations to her. Arabella sends them her thanks, which really isn't needed because it was torture to her, but not for Justine. Justine had the biggest smile on her face one that goes around the world as many times as it could before it hurt, under the security of the veil.
As tradition Magda – or the leader of the clan – would give the woman/girl away. " Congratulations my dear. You made a very good decision. Very diplomatic. You'll make a great leader of our people. "
"Thank you" Justine answered in a whisper. At that Magda's eyes grew wide. "Justine, what are you doing? Where is Arabella?"
"I'm marring Gerard, just like Arabella promised. And Arabella, Arabella is gone. She doesn't love Gerard and she knew that I did so, she asked me to marry him and be happy for the rest of my life. Please don't tell anyone, Magda."
"Alright my dear I'll keep it to myself. For you, Congratulations. I've very happy for you and hope that you have a beautiful life together."
"Thank you." Justine said, beginning to cry.
Magda and Justine reached the alter and the ceremony began.
"Do you Gerard take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold? In sickness and in health? Till death do you part?"
"I do."
"And do you, Arabella, take this man? To have and to hold? In sickness and in health? Till death do you part?"
"I do." Justine answers through her tears, And Arabella through the minds of every one around Gerard and Justine.
"You may now kiss the bride." Says Vladimir – one of Gerard's groom's.
As soon as that sealing kiss happened, Arabella threw her bag out her window and followed after it. Landing on her feet she started off at a run for the garage. To her right she heard the dogs picking up speed at an alarming pace when they began to realize what was going on.
She reached the garage, but not fast enough for one of the dogs to get her leg. Soccer kicking the beast in the face, she slammed the door just as the others came along. Walking to her Lamborghini, she goes over her plan.
1. Get (Justine) married.
2. Get out of the house with out being seen.
3. Get to Jade's and make his place safe.
So far, so good, she thought as she put the key in the ignition, slightly turns it and listens to the engine roar to life. The door in front of her opens to the twelve guard dogs. Damn! If those dogs get hurt they'll kill me, she thought as she slowly pulled out. The dogs moved out of the way – as though it was the most natural thing for a dog to do. She finally got to the gate and prepared herself for her final goodbye.
Chapter 6
Driving like lightning she gets to Jade's in 5 minutes. For a normal human it would have taken a good hour, hour and a half. Even with a young, good engine. Arabella gets out of the car, shuts her door, and quickly searches around her for any signs of the 'family' as she walks to the door.
Ding—dong. Ding-dong. Ding-dong.
"Hey Airy!!!!!"
"Hey Jade." We embraced quickly and then he ushered me in as I checked over my shoulder one last time before he shut the door.
"So, what would you like to do?"
"Um, how about just hanging out. Uhhh, where do I put my stuff?"
"Oh, you can put it in my room for the time being. We'll get your bed ready when my parents get home."
"I thought you said they were gone all weekend."
"They were, but they called to ask how I was and I told them you were coming over, so they said they'd be home right away. You do realize they want to meet you."
"Yes. I guess they would want to." Great. Not only go I have to look after Jade, but now I have to look after Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt. Could this get any worse? Yes, yes it could. She thought as the fear began to wash over her.
"Would you like something to eat?"
"Yes, I would. I can't remember the last time I ate actually. I think it was lunch yesterday. I don't know."
"I'll call for some pizza or Chinese. Which ever you prefer."
"Chinese if you don't mind. I have to much pizza with varsity drama and the productions."
"Not at all." He said with phone in hand. "Hello, yes, I would like to order low mien, general thoa's chicken, sweet and sour chicken, brown fried rice, that beef and broccoli thing, crab puffs, and egg rolls. Send it to 2407 Harroden Dr. Yes. Thank you. The food should be here in 20 minutes." Jade yelled as he hung up the phone.
"Ok. Ah, where's your bathroom?"
"Down the hall to the right."
"Thanks."
By now Magda should know what happened. She should know that I left and Justine got married in my place.
Arabella's head was pounding. Every one was trying to find her with their thoughts, causing her to want to hurl. Magda's voice broke through the chaos and spoke to her.
Arabella, what you've done is treacherous. You know Gerard will kill her. Justine does not deserve this. You know that. Come home or I will come and get you myself!
Magda, I did what I did because I did not want to marry Gerard and rule with him. As for Justine, I knew she loved him and I know for sure that Gerard will not touch a hair on her head. If he does he'll lose his reputation. And he won't be as big as a womanizer as she usually is. And you wouldn't be able to come and bring me home anyway. I am some place that you would never find me, for you will not find me. By day you hide and by night you fly. While I fly in all time.
Gerard. You will love Justine and treat her like a queen. If you touch on hair on her head and hurt her, I will gladly come back and kill you myself. That is not a threat. It's a promise.
With that he connection was broken and she blacked out.
"Hey Airy!! Arabella!!!!"
"Wha… wha… where am I?"
"Your on the bathroom floor. You passed out. Are you sure the last time you ate was yesterday. By the way, when was the last time you slept? You look like hell."
"Yeah. Help me up."
"Let's get some food in you."
Chapter 7
"HHHEEEELLLOOOO Honey!!!!! WE'RE HOME!!!" Mrs. Vanderbilt sang as she walked through the door.
"Oh god! My mother. I forgot to tell you she's a little extravagant."
"That's ok. I'm used to it."
"Really?"
"Yeah. You really don't want to meet my family."
"Hello Sweetie."
"Hi mom. Hey dad."
"Hey kiddo, who's this?"
"Mom, dad, this is Arabella."
"Hello, it's very nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt."
"It's nice to meet you Miss…?"
"Swan. Arabella Swan."
"Who are your parents?"
"My parents are dead. I'm living with my Aunt Magda."
"Well I want to meet her sometime."
"I don't think that's possible." The Vanderbilt's looked at her. "She's really busy with work and trying to get me through school. All on her own."
"Ah, I see, a single mother business woman. Well that's ok. I understand how that is."
"Thank you. I know she would love to meet you." And drink your blood.
"Oh its no problem at all. I was like that once. Minus being a single parent."
"Arabella!"
"What!? What did I do?"
"You smiled! You never smile!"
"Maybe I never had a reason too before. Is it bad?"
"No, No it's a beautiful smile. I like it."
"Good, cause if you didn't I don't think I could be friends with you anymore."
"You wouldn't"
"Don't doubt it. Remember my threats actually happen."
"Ok you would."
Laughter breaks out in the little kitchen. For the first time in a long time, Arabella felt love. Actual love. Something she had lost long ago. That night she had the best sleep she had in a long time.
******************************************************************************************
"Arabella look after the new recruits. Tell us who makes it and destroy the weaklings."
"Yes, sir."
"Oh, and we have a pet for you in there. Get going."
"Yes si….. what!"
The hall was dark and damp. Light streaming from the door and windows burned through causing the dust to settle unnaturally.
"Turn out the lights" they mooned and screamed. "It burns us."
"Ok, just stop screaming. Which one of you is William Vanderbelt?"
"I am." Says a voice in the back. "Who's asking?"
"Arabella Swan."
"It can't be. You can't be Arabella. She died years ago."
"Yes and no."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh William. My human soul died, but I will not. I am like those who have brought you here. I haven't aged since the eve of our wedding."
"Let me see." She moved closer to him and closer into the light. "Oh my God, you look just like you did three years ago."
"Yes, and so do you….um, do you have a wife and child?"
"Yes. Two boys and a girl."
"I'm so sorry they brought you here."
"Don't be. I got to see you again. I can die in peace now."
"You won't die William, not if you were bitten." At this his eyes grew wide with fear. "Did you get bitten?"
"Arabella, What's going to happen to me?"
"You'll become one of…one of us. You'll become a vampire. The only way you can die is if one of us rips your limbs from your body and burn the remains."
"Is that the only way?"
"Well, the other way should be for me to bite you."
"Do it, Arabella. End this for me. Please. Let me go in peace."
"Arabella, Bella, Bells."
"Jade. Oh Jade." Arabella said as she sobbed into his chest.
"Did you have a bad dream?"
"No, not a dream. A memory."
"What? You were dreaming a memory?"
"Yes. Jade there's something you don't know about me. Actually there's a lot you don't know about me."
"Bella, whatever it is, you're my friend. I will be here, I will never leave you, no matter what."
"Do you really want to know?"
"Yes."
"Ok, but you have to listen to it without interrupting. Understand?"
"Yes."
"Ok, Jade. I was born in 1883, right here in this little town, to Jessie and Marie Swan. I had two brothers and sisters. All of them married and had children – Many of which we go to school with and with whom are your friends. But I'm getting ahead of myself. When I was seventeen years old, your great grandfather proposed to me. We were engaged for two months and on the eve of our wedding, destruction fell. A storm blew in that night. Thunder and lightning crashed around us. We were walking in the woods. I thought I saw something in the shadows, but he said it was the storm. I believed him."
She paused, pulling her thoughts together. "Well what happened?"
"I disappeared from the face of the world, he lived on. I was changed, he wasn't."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm a vampire Jade. I have been for a little under a hundred years. I'm doomed to walk this earth, never to age, or to have children. I will be this way forever."
"You're a vamp, vamp"
"Vampire."
"Like, the blood sucking, night crawlers, fallen angels of God, vampire?"
"Yes, but I'm not a pure blood, I'm a half bread."
"What's the difference?"
"Purebloods are the fallen angels, half breads are the former humans who were bitten by the purebloods, but not fully drained. Their chosen to live."
"So you were chosen to live?"
"I guess. I tried for years to get the others to kill me, but they wouldn't. Now I'm head of the clan."
"What do you mean?"
"Madga, My 'Aunt', chose me to take care of everyone for now on."
"Did you want to be the leader?"
"No. Ever since I was rejected death, I've been for the one who changed me, so I could kill him."
"Well that's a life goal."
"That's not funny!"
"Well, you do have to admit. I mean you're going to live forever. You really can't die, can you?"
"Actually, I can, but it's difficult. There are two ways to kill a vampire, both painful- to say the least."
"And you've been denied both ways."
"Well as a choice, yes. I haven't done any true fighting, so I mean, I could die doing that."
"Wow, so may options, so much time."
She looks at him with her face as serious as she could make it, but he knew that a laugh was playing at her lips.
Chapter 8
The next morning Arabella woke to the smell of pancakes. Something she hadn't smelled or enjoyed in a long time. She took in everything as she walked down the Vanderbelt's stairs, right into the kitchen.
"Oh! Good morning, sweetheart! Did you sleep well?"
"Oh yes, I slept fine. Is Jade up yet?"
"No he's still sleeping. This is his only time to sleep in, you know. The weekends are his only free time. You must have a lot of free time at your house."
"Actually, Mrs. Vanderbelt, I don't. I have to do a lot of keep my house in shape."
"Really! Like what?"
"Well. Well wash the dishes, windows, scrub the floors, stuff like that."
"Well, I'll be. Tell Jade that he's lucky he doesn't have to do that much. He complains all the time about it."
"Oh well. I don't."
"Ooooohhhhh?"
"I just can't stand the house being a pig sty, so I clean it. My family really doesn't care about cleanliness. Not like I do anyway."
"Good morning dad and mom. Good morning Bella."
"Good morning."
"How'd you sleep sweet heart?"
"Great mom. I slept great."
"Well that's wonderful, sweety. Now you and Arabella go out on the back porch and I'll bring you breakfast out there."
"Ok mom. Come on Arabella."
"Jade did you forget that…Oh wait I didn't tell you why I left home did I?"
"Well you did tell me that your head of the clan."
"Ok. That's part of it. Here's the other reason, they wanted me to marry this pompous vampire, Jerard. He offered me his hand – I refused. But then I let my maid Justine marry him in place of me. So everyone knows what I did, but they don't know where I am."
"So if they find you?"
"They'll either one – kill me or two – make me marry him. The only thing that is for certain is that they will come after me."
"Does that mean that my family and I are in danger?"
"Yes, but not just you, everyone."
"What do you mean?"
"Everyone has my scent on them."
"But that's a good thing isn't it?"
"Yes maybe. It'll bye me time."
"Jade! Arabella! You'll be late for school."
Jade awoke to find Arabella in his arms. He didn't want to get up. To him Arabella was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in his life, and having her in his arms made him was to stay that way forever. Arabella stirred, to get more comfortable. She turned into him, and he embraced her even more. Tilting his head down he kissed her on the top of her head and then down to her lips. To his surprise she kissed back. His hands running up her back to the lower neck. She was craning her neck to stay with him. Opening his eyes he saw how much she wanted him.
"Jade…."
"Don't ruin it Arabella." And with that they went back to a kiss.
"Jade, get up. You'll be late! Jade!"
"Mom!"
"Ah!!!!!" Arabella screamed as she fell off the bed.
"Oh, Jade, I didn't know she was your girlfriend."
"Oh no, Mrs. Vanderbelt…."
"Jade why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want you to do that, for one thing."
"Oh, well, I'll let you get back to what you were doing. Just remember to use protection." Mrs. Vanderbelt said with a song in her voice as she left the room.
"Well, that was embarrassing."
"Oh, no, it's refreshing."
"Huh?"
"Don't ask."
"Ok."
"So should we actually go to school today or should we skip?"
"I say go to school."
"Why? I mean that's the first place they'd look."
"That's exactly the reason why. Look Jade, I've been around every one. So therefore my scent is on everyone and everything. It will confuse them. Plus they don't know my schedule."
"They could go look it up in the office."
"True, but you do forget that I can run out of the classroom when and if they come by. I could even ask to go to the bathroom and I'll go hide some place else. They'd have to use telepathy to find me and for most vampires that drains them."
"Ooohhh, I get it. Hide in plain sight. Then they can't attack you."
"Exactly" she said as she gave him a kiss. "That's why I like you," she said mockingly.
"Shut up."
"Jade, Arabella, may I come in?" Mrs. Vanderbelt asked as she knocked on the door. Arabella got up and went across the room and opened the door.
"Hi, Mrs. Vanderbelt. About this morning…"
"Oh, Sweetheart, don't worry about it. I was wondering when my son was going to start dating. I mean don't get me wrong, but I had my doubts. Breakfast will be ready soon." Arabella just stood there as Mrs. Vanderbelt walked - well more like a gliding skip – down the stairs humming Danka Shay. Jade began to laugh hysterically to the point of wetting himself.
"She cut me off!!!! What!!!!"
"That's the way she is, Bells," he said after he calmed down. "She has to have the first and last word of the conversation. Well come to think of it, she also needs the whole body of the convo."
"Wow, and I thought my family was bad."
"Family?"
"Yeah, well…the clan anyway. My real family wasn't like that. Then again that was some time ago."
"Yeah."
Jade went over to Arabella, gently reached for her hand and kissed her. He started to lead her to the stairs when she stopped.
"What's the matter? Arabella?"
"Shh. Jade."
"Tell me what's wrong."
"We need to get out of here," she said as she pulled him back into his room.
"Then why don't we go down the stairs?"
"Because we can't"
"Why can't we?"
"Because Magda and Jerard are here!"
"My parents! We have to help them!"
"Jade the only way we can help them is if we leave – NOW!!! Help me get out of your window."
"Ok?"
Chapter 9
"Where are we going?"
"I'm taking you to my secret place. I go there sometimes, to get way."
"Well, where is this secret place?"
"Up on the ridge. The top of the highest peak."
"Yes, Believe it or not William and I named that ridge. Although we named it something different."
"What did you and my great grandfather name it?"
"Jaded love."
"Is that why I'm named Jade?"
"No, that was just a coincidence."
"Well then, how come everyone calls it Skull Mountain?"
"It's called Skull Mountain because that's where I went missing. About a month after, the search party found the remains of a girl. Some thought it was me. My family and William did not. But the people who did spread a story. And that is what kept me hidden and unrecognized for so long."
"Who was my the girl?"
"My sister."
"She went missing a year before. She…. She was finally put to rest that day."
"It must have been hard for you. Not being able to be there. At the funeral."
"It wasn't that difficult. I stood up in the church's bell tower and watched. I went to her later and said my goodbye."
"Why are you taking me there?"
"Because it's the one place they fear, but I don't. The night I was changed they lost one of their own – because of me. They won't go after you. I promise. As soon as I can, I'll go back to your house and get your parents. But I need you to stay there and not make a sound. Do you understand?"
"Yes. And…Arabella…Thank you.
"Jerard, you and Barcoff go search for Arabella and if her human is with her – find something interested for him."
"If you touch my son, I'll kill you!"
"You could try. But you'll be trying in vain."
"What do you mean? You can't die?"
"That's exactly what I'm saying."
"What are you?"
"I'm a Vampire Mr. Vanderbelt, and because I revealed this to you and your wife you'll have to die – or you could become one of us. It's your choice."
"Excuse me Magda. I'm sorry to interrupt, but Arabella and her human aren't up there. In fact, their gone."
"What?" Magda said as she began to fume.
"I'm sorry your majesty. We will find her."
"I hope you do. At least for your sake. If she finds out that I was the one who ordered her to be changed, your best chance for survival is if you're not around." She told them. "And even then you don't have that good of a chance." She said to herself.
"Laurent, where do you think she went?"
"Well, sir, I think she went to Jaded Love."
"What's Jaded Love?"
"It's the Cliffs, Gerard. Her and beloved went there all the time. That's where we found and changed her."
"But there's no cliffs around here named Jaded Love."
"That's because the mortals know and call it Skull Hill."
"Why would she take them there?"
"Because we can no longer step foot on that land. After she was changed and the body of her sister was discovered the land became hollow. A cemetery was erected and it is guarded with marble crosses and crucifixes. Only she can step there."
"I'm not really following on how she can, if she's exactly like us."
"That's the thing. She's not. She wears her mothers golden cross around her neck. It doesn't affect her like it does us. It's almost as if she was never changed. There is also the fact that when we changed her we lost one of our own. And its taboo to set foot there. Our little Arabella, well she's the cause of it all. That's why she's not afraid to go there. Anyone who's on the cliffs is protected from us. Laurent, I want you to watch out for her, follow her, and report back to me."
"There's no need for that Magda. I'm already here."
"Run while you can my dear."
Chapter 10
"Arabella, dear, run. Run while you have the chance."
"No Mr. Vanderbelt. I've run enough and because I ran I put you in danger."
"No, no…"
"Yes, yes I have. This is all because I wouldn't marry Gerard and ran way and tricked everyone." Arabella said as she sat down at the bass of a faded and decayed statue of an angel." We were going to be united! The two biggest clans becoming one under the two strongest vampires of all time."
"Arabella, your a vampire?"
"Yes, Mrs. Vanderbelt. I am. I have been for around a hundred years. Mr. Vanderbelt, your grandfather, was my fiancée. I was the girl who went missing the eve of the wedding."
"Your Arabella Rose. Bella Rose!"
"Yes, I am her, but…"
"Now that you know what she really is. Do you really trust her with your son?" silence settled in the atmosphere, the only movement in the room was that of Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbelt looking from Magda to Arabella.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbelt, I would never hurt Jade. I hate being a vampire, that's why I ran. I don't want to be the head of the clan. I don't want to be a vampire. Magda just let them go."
"Only if you give me what I want."
"Magda let them get to their son and go and I will go with you and do what you ask." She said as she turned. "I'm so sorry Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbelt."
"Agreed, let them pass Laurent."
"How will they get to Jade?"
"They can take my car. Here are the keys Mr. Vanderbelt. He'll come to you don't look for him. Do you understand?"
"Yes." He replied as he hugged her "Thank you. Be careful."
Arabella stayed completely emotionless. Knowing that if she showed any sort of emotion Magda would break her part of the bargain and kill Jade and his family once she was out of the picture.
"Laurent, restrain our dear Bella." Walking over to Arabella, Laurent whispered into her ear so that only she could hear. " I'm sorry Arabella."
"It's ok Laurent. I understand. You love me but you can't go against them. Its ok. I forgive you." The appearance of shock was on his face for a split second and then changed as quickly as it had come into the look of love and daring.
As they reached the car, Magda slid into the black Lexus and Gerard followed only after he ordered Laurent to follow after them with Arabella. He rolled down the black tinted window, "And Bella, you will be mine."
"Its Arabella to you."
"Shut up you little bitch. You fell in love with a human! Those filthy morals. What could they offer you? Love?"
"Yes."
"Ha! For how long do you think that will last? Hmmm! Until death do you part?"
"Just because Jade will one day die, that doesn't mean that I'll stop loving him."
"Arabella you may always love him, but he won't always love you. Laurent put her in the car."
"You know he has a point. I mean once he's dead he'll stop loving you."
"Laurent did you forget that we're the living dead? I still love and I'm dead. Doesn't that prove that the dead can love?"
"Yes, but we're the living dead. Gerard was talking about dead dead."
"Gerard is an idiot and he only cares about himself. I thought that you thought for yourself."
"I do. It's just… its just he make a good point, and so do you, but I have to agree with Gerard on this."
"The only reason your agreeing with him is because you like me and are harboring anger towards me because I chose Jade and not you – wow, you turned into Gerard."
"I'm not like Gerard!" Laurent said as his grip on the steering wheel increased and turned his knuckles bleach bone white.
"Your everything like him! Admit it, you wish that Jade had never come into my life! You believed you had half a chance because you knew I would never choose Gerard! Admit it!"
"Arabella," he sighs, "I admit it, but that's not the full truth. I loved you since the moment I saw you – before you were even part of the clan. I loved you as a human. I never wanted you as part of this world. But I wasn't the only one that noticed you."
"So you're the reason I'm a vampire?"
"No! God no. I begged them to leave you and William alone, but they just laughed at me."
"Whose "they"?"
"I've said too much."
"Laurent, who is "they"? Tell me!"
"All in good time, Arabella. All in good time."
"Damn you Magda. Stay out of my head and conversations!"
"Laurent. Did you want my to help?"
"Yes, more than anything."
"Then fall behind and take me to the cliffs. You can stay with me and Jade. If you promise that you're on my side and my side alone."
"She got him to take her to the Cliffs! I knew I should have gone in the car with them. I told you Magda!"
"Sit Down Gerard! And Stay quiet. I'm trying to think."
"I'm sorry, but this is the second time she's eluded us. I'm getting tired of this."
"My lord." Barcoff says with a low bow. "You're dinner is served."
"Tell Justine to bring it here, Magda and I have some discussing to do."
"Yes sir."
A few minuets later two terrified teenage girls walk into the room. Their eyes wide, faces tear streaked. "Welcome Ladies. I hope you'll stay for dinner. Please sit." The two girls sat on the purple velvet sofa and watched as the two vampires circled them, licking their lips, waiting for the salvation that will soon run down their throats. Blood and screams filled the room as the two girls life forces drained from their bodies. Two drunk to realize the pain, but bad enough to know that you're life was ending. Barcoff entered and removed the bodies.
After some moments of silence, Gerard finally continued. Having enough of the non-action, "Magda, we can't just sit here and not do anything! We need too…"
"Is there anything else I can get you my lord and lady?"
"No thank you Justine. You may go." Magda said with the warmth of a summer day in her voice. Gerard just stared with fire in his eyes.
Gerard was a man of many words, thoughts, and plans. But he never thought anyone could out smart him. Of course, after he found out he married Justine and not Arabella, His eyes became fiery and his heart steely. He had told Justine that he was under orders not to hurt her, but he found ways – and it killed her. She no longer loved him. "How could she?"
As Justine exited the room she looked back at Gerard, only to see that his expression hadn't changed. It made her want to cringe and cry, at the same time. "Arabella
– stay away. I think they're planning to kill you. Never come back to this place – not for anything, even if it is to kill Gerard. Just stay away."
Chapter 11
Arabella woke to the sudden message, not knowing who was sending it, but she had a feeling it was from Justine. That message had, in fact confirmed her suspicions about Magda and Gerard – on one count. The other suspicion was still just a theory and she was afraid its wasn't going to be answered. "Bella, what's wrong?" Jade asked. He knew that Arabella wouldn't tell him full out, but he was going to try.
"Nothing Jade, just vampire stuff."
"Ahh, so… Can I help in anyway?"
"Stay in the woods and around the cliffs. Don't leave until I tell you to."
"Ok. I can do that."
"I also need you to keep your parents here."
"Si el capitan."
A smile spread across her face, which turned into the most boisterous laugh he had ever heard. The laughing caused Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbelt to wake up and for Laurent to come running back from patrolling the perminitor. "Arabella what's going on?"
"Nothing Laurent. Just go back on patrol. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbelt. If you could… you need to stay here. Please don't leave. If you do they will find you. And I really can't have them get you."
"Why?" asked Mrs. Vanderbelt.
"Because, if they get you, they will take you back to the house and they want me to go back so that they can kill me."
"Arabella, something's approaching."
"I know. Its Justine."
"How do you know that?"
"Because she just told me that she was here."
"She's not afraid of this place?"
"Apparently not anymore."
"Why?"
"Because we're here and because Gerard has been killing her, she feels nothing now." She turned her head in the direction of Justine's entrance. "Justine."
"Yes."
"Are you ok?" She nodded her head, her eyes never moving. "Justine I will let you stay here, but you have to promise you on my side. I'm going. I'll be back."
Chapter 12
"Barcoff!" Gerard yelled. "Barcoff! Where is Justine?" Barcoff looked at Gerard, not able to speak
"She's gone Gerard." Magda said.
"What do you mean Magda?"
"Exactly what I said. She left and she went to…"
"Find me…"he said as he turned to face to door.
"Arabella!"
Magda, Gerard, and Barcoff stood. Alarm filled the room. Arabella knew what she chose, but now that she was here, she felt like this was the wrong decision. "Surprised to see me? Ha. I thought you'd be pleased. I mean I came to say that I was wrong and that, well I want you Gerard." Dead that is.
"Well Gerard. I think you and Arabella need some time alone. Come Barcoff."
"So you really want to be mine?"
"Sure, why not?"
"You know. For some reason I don't believe you."
"What is there not to believe? I came back – and might I mention, of my own accord. Is it alright if I sit?" she motioned with her hand to the ivory and forest green chair. "Yes, sure. So shall we have a ceremony or just have Magda say we're each others?"
"How about we just say we're each others and skip everything else. So why don't you just kiss me and get it over with."
"Magda did say you were feisty. I didn't know you were fiery."
Gerard moved swiftly to Arabella. First starting slowly, but then becoming more aggressive, more wanting. Arabella slowly let him move forward. As he became more passionate, she leaned in towards his neck. Her razor sharp teeth extracted and slowly sunk into his hard flesh. In one quick movement she ripped his throat out and plunges a 24 karat gold letter opener into his chest. Gerard stumbled backwards.
"Wh…Why?"
"Because you killed William and you were going to kill me and everyone close to me. For that you had to die."
"You know, pure bloods don't die as easily as the half breeds." Gerard sided as he pulled the letter opener from his chest into her heart. Arabella screamed in agony as she fell to her knees. "Arabella, to kill me, you'd have to do much more, but for you, well you only need to have a dagger plunged into your heart."
"Then tell me Gerard, what would it take for you to die?"
"You would have to split my limbs apart and or burn me alive till I'm as crisp as a burnt turkey on Christmas Eve. But you won't be able to do that because your finally getting your wish."
"Actually I'm not."
"What?"
"This dagger had your blood on it. I ripped your throat out. I drank and soaked up your blood and added it to my own. So how about I do this. I'll return the favor."
Arabella plunged the dagger into Gerard's heart letting him bleed out. He slowly fell onto the lounge as she stood over him. As he sat and watched his last minutes came, the blood ran down his long, white hand, and Arabella was gone.
Chapter 13
"Where did she go?"
"That's not the question you should be asking?"
"Then what should I be asking?"
"Where's Gerard?"
"Magda, I think I found him."
"May he rest in his fiery grave. Barcoff."
"Yes."
"Gerard and I made a pact, if either of us should die we would give our clan to the other. That is, by the choice of the members of it."
"Magda, we would follow you to the end of the world. You are our body."
"I'm glad to here you say that."
"What's going on?"
"Who knows. I bet Magda is going to announce something. Whatever it is, it probably has something to do with Arabella and what she pulled."
"Really? How can you tell?" the other said sarcastically.
Rachel rolled her eyes and sighed at this reply. " I can tell because she told me. Now if you'd stop talking maybe she'll tell us why she made us all come in here."
"Hello. How is every one? You are all probably wondering why you are here. Barcoff, seal the doors."
"Yes my lady." Everyone began to look at each other at this response.
"I have some bad news. Gerard is dead. But with his death comes a birth. Gerard's clan will be joining ours. We welcome you with open arms. If you do not wish to stay with us, you may leave. I will not stop you. But I ask. No, I don't think I'll do it. Oh, what the hell. I ask of your help. In turn I'll give you what ever you want."
"What are you wanting us to do for this offer?"
"Find and capture Arabella. Bring her to me." Magda turned and began to walk out when she added "Oh, and kill the humans and the two vampires that she's with."
"Well you heard what she said. Lets go."
"Rachel, you can't just barge off to kill Arabella. You need to plan and plan well. She's very smart and she knows the land better that anyone else."
"Well then, I guess we'll just have to outwit her."
"Laurent! Justine!"
"Yes" they both said in unison. "They're coming. You need to move the Vanderbelt's. You need to move them far, very far away. I don't care where you take them. Just get them out of here."
"Arie, what's wrong?"
"Jade, you need to leave. You need to run. Get out of town. Out of the country. Anything!"
"Why?"
"They're com…They're here."
"Hello Arabella."
"Barcoff…Everyone."
"You know, I've never seen you so frightened. I wonder why that could be? Oh. Maybe its because you killed Gerard and now everyone is after you."
"Jade get your parents and get out of here. Barcoff don't hurt them. They don't know anything about this. Just let them go."
"I would do that but…"
"Magda ordered us to kill everyone but you."
"Why only me?"
"Because my dear, you're the next up."
"Laurent, get them out of here!!!!!!!!!"
"Laurent if you do that you'll never be allowed back."
"Rachel, what makes you think I want to go back?"
"Well maybe the fact that Arabella will be running the show from now on,. I think that might be a reason."
"What makes you think I want to be the leader?"
"Because, my dear, I can tell you why you're a vampire. Why you were wanted. And who wanted you changed."
"You would never tell me that. I know you Magda. You never give anything without taking." Arabella said as she turned. Magda stand just out of the pack just beyond reach.
"Unfortunately my dear you can't refuse."
"Apparently." The clan begins to span out and surround and encircle her Magda. Their teeth barred and faces retched. Their features only highlighted by the darkness from the storm now rolling in. Fear and hate rolled over Arabella, feeding the clans ever-growing power. "Your no match for us Arabella. You never were." Arabella readied herself for the attack. Laurent and Justine took Jade and his family through the trees, to the quietest place on the hill. The Cottage.
The Cottage was an old broken down wooden shack that resembled something of an outstanding home during its time. It had been the place that William had built for himself and Arabella. They were going to live there and raise their children there. But after she had disappeared the cottage had fallen to ruin. The once beautiful mahogany wood was now charred and termite eaten. Jade and his family entered, not knowing, but intrigued that a place so simple could be so beautiful. Jade had one thought enter his mind. "I hope Arabella's ok."
"Oh I bet she'll be fine, Sweetie."
Arabella readied herself for the attack. They came at her as quick as lightning; she deflected their attack making the numbers dwindle. Magda was not high up above watching as her numbers became narks in the dirt. Her fury grew as she realized that none of her clan would stop Arabella. She would have to do it herself. But not now. She need to run and build up her numbers. "Everyone fall back."
"Someone afraid of what might happen? Don't run Magda, stay and fight."
"We'll meet again." Rachel snides in Arabella's ear as she knows her out."
"ARABELLA!!!!!!!!!!" everyone screamed as they came running back into the woods.
"She almost killed all of us. How did she get so strong? I can't…"
"Magda, I think…"
"Shut up! I'm trying to think."
"Yes. But I was just saying that maybe she drank Gerard's blood."
"Ha! And how did you figure that one out? Hm?"
"Well, she moved just like he did. No one could touch her – just like Gerard."
"But Arabella has always been able to fight exceptionally. She just became more in touch with her abilities since she became the leader."
"Magda, you can't seriously believe that! There was nothing left of Gerard and yet there was blood everywhere. Its inevitable Magda!"
"Rachel! Know your place and remember it well! You may leave!"
"Yes, my lady."
"Barcoff! Did you see any signs of the bit mark on Gerard?"
"No, but he was missing a chunk of his neck and he has a wound in his chest. You know, not all of the blood was Gerard's. some was Arabella's."
"What!" Magda said darkly as she turned to face Barcoff."
"Didn't you smell the difference between them? Half of that blood in there is Arabella's."
"Did you clean up all of the blood and dispose of it or is there still some laying around?"
"The room hasn't been touched."
"Good."
"If you don't mind me asking, why is that good?"
"It's good, Barcoff, because we now have a way to stop her."
"Arie, how are you feeling?"
"I feel fine Jade."
"Arabella, why did they run?"
"I don't know Laurent. They just did."
"Well, ones thing for sure. As long as Gerard's not fighting, the better off we are." It was the first time Justine had spoken out of term. She was usually so quiet that everyone forgot about her.
"What!!! Gerard is ruthless when it comes to the hunt."
"Justine, we'll never see Gerard again." At that moment everyone looked at Arabella. The two other vampire's in her presence knew that something unspeakable had happened but they dared not ask. Fortunately for them they didn't have to. For Jade had stepped up and asked. Arabella proceeded to tell them all of what happened, leaving out some of the grimy details about the seduction. When she was finally done with the answer to this (and all the other questions), she sat and waited.
Waiting was all she could do now. They had to put all of the puzzle pieces that she gave them together. For a strange reason Arabella knew this wasn't the only thing she was waiting for. She had this nagging at the back of her head, but she couldn't place it. She knew that Magda and Gerard had planned to kill her, but it went deeper than that. It was almost like something that Gerard had kept hidden in the back of his mind that was now trying to unlock itself from the depths of darkness in her own. It was something long forgotten, yet not so old that people didn't know about it. Arabella shook her head, knowing she was putting to much thought into it. Whatever wanted to be reviled would revile itself in due time. That much she knew and she stood by.
Magda stormed through the house calling the clan into attention. This was not the first time in here reign that this had happened. They were fully aware that something had not gone to plan. The only thing was that she had this look in her eyes that was unfathomable to them. "I have some news. As you already know Gerard was killed. I found the killer. Unfortunately she is of our family. She was our future. We lost many men and friends when we tried to stop her, but she was unthinkably and unbelievably strong and fast. I believe when she killed Gerard she drank his blood and took control of his power. There is only one way to stop her now. We take action as soon as we know it's effective." Magda turned and walked out, leaving the rest of the clan to do what they liked.
"Justine, do you think you could go hunt and prepare something for the Vanderbelt's to eat."
"mhm."
"Laurent. I think we should practice our combat moves. We're going to need it."
"Good idea." They moved into the clearing. Took their stances and began. Laurent struck first, ramming his first towards Arabella's side. Arabella side stepped his attack and came with her own. Both maneuvered each other and attacked again. As they practiced their techniques, Jade and his parents awoke and went to discover the reason for the thundering sounds that were echoing off the trees and the rocks. Jade followed the sound until he finally came into the clearing. "Arabella, Laurent, what are you doing?"
"Practice. We need to prepare for when Magda attacks again."
"Oh, for a minute I thought you two were fighting."
"Nope. Just practice."
Jade decided to sit near the opening of the clearing and watched. For a few minutes of the fighting he jumped, but after a couple of attacks he became used to the sound of thunder coming from their two body's clashing. After about an hour of this Arabella and Laurent finished their practice, met Jade at the opening and went back to camp.
"We're close to beating her, and yet so far. One shot of this and Arabella will lose her life." Magda proclaimed, triumphantly holding a red glowing bullet between her pointer and index finger. Barcoff's eyes gleamed with a fiery vengeance. "And once she's gone no one will ever try to over throw us again."
"Us?"
"I mean you. No one will ever try to overthrow you again."
"Remember your place Barcoff. Remember is well." And will that she left.
"Remember your place Barcoff. Remember it well. I'll show her my place. I have just as much power as her. I was Gerard's second and the future leader of the clan. I'll help her with Arabella, and then she'll have to deal with my wrath. If she fails in destroying Arabella, I'll kill her myself. That wench will pay, with her blood!"
"Laurent, Justine, their coming is soon. If they come, I want you to take the Vanderbelt's and never return. No matter what. Magda will never stop. Not until she has all of the power. I have a feeling, though, that Barcoff is planning something. I know for certain that he was Gerard's successor. As I am Magda's. he will not be happy with this." Laurent and Justine listened until the speech went into thought.
"What do you think Magda will do Justine?"
"I don't know Laurent. I've been with her for centuries, and I've never seen her this way. Ever since Arabella joined the clan its been… well different. I mean whenever someone rejected the clan she would let them go and then when no one was looking she'd send one of her guards to go kill them and then bring back the ashes and say that it was a werewolf that killed them. But now she had the whole clan behind her. Arabella's not just going to be killed, she'll probably be consumed."
"What do you mean consumed?"
"I mean, instead of just flat out killing her and burning her body, they will drink her blood until she is sucked dry. They won't even wait for her to lose consciousness and for her blood to turn cold."
" Justine, Laurent, why… why would they do that to Arabella?" Fear spread across Jade's face.
"Because, Jade, she was killed Gerard and drank his blood. Gerard was an impeccable vampire. And her drinking his blood gave her his power's and that's taboo. We'll be lucky if Magda doesn't come after us. Actually we'd be more lucky is she didn't kill us."
"Should I take that as a praise to God. Should I thank him for us being chased by vampires, but not damned to hell! I don't think so! Vampires are the reason I had to leave my home and my parents and I had to run. If we survive this I'm never talking to Arabella again!"
"I didn't expect you to, Jade. Why do you think I pushed you away so much?"
"Arabella, stay away from me and from my family. We're not going to die for you!"
"I never expected you to." Arabella whispered as Jade stormed away.
"Lets go. Times short and Magda is closing the search in. Get Jade and his family out of here. They were never part of this and their not about to be apart of it now."
Laurent and Justine walked away. Listening, Arabella waited until they took the Vanderbilt's. She had told them to stay away and now they were being forced. It would only be a matter of time before Magda showed up and Arabella's life would be over.
"Jade, Where's Arabella? Where is she?"
"Mrs. Varderbilt, Arabella's staying. She's not coming with us."
"What?! Is she staying because I yelled at her?"
"No. She forced you away. She wanted you to get mad at her so that you would leave and now worry about her. She need you to get mad at her. She didn't want your death on her conscience too. She already had to deal with William and I doubt she's still fully healed from that."
"Who's William?"
"It's great granddad, mom."
"Wait, was Arabella the fiancée that went missing?"
"Yes. She loved him. Magda thought it would be a nice gift if Arabella had him as a pet, but it was cruel. So Arabell killed him. She didn't want to see him suffer the same fate that she had to suffer."
"Oh my God." Mrs. Vanderbilt said in astonishment as her hand moved to cover her mouth.
"Ever since Arabella became one of us, she's been searching for who changed her. The thing she doesn't know is that is it was Magda herself who changed her. And now she'll be dead by morning."
"That poor girl. Why would someone, this Magda, do that?"
"Because, Magda was betrayed on her wedding night. She couldn't stand to see Arabella happy."
"And why was that?"
"Arabella's great grandmother was the one who stole Magda's husband. She vowed to ruin them if they ever got married. So each woman in the family has gotten married in secret. When it came time for Arabella to marry, they thought they curse would be lifted. Especially since they thought Magda was dead and she was childless. Little did they know that she turned into a vampire shortly after that deceitful night."
"And now its her final revenge. Death for Death. Life for Life."
"What will become of us?"
"Well that all depends."
"On what?"
" Arabella."
"Its time for a blood bath. Arabella will pay. Go! Find her, but leave her to me to kill."
I'll get you Magda. You'll pay for what you're deception. I'll follow you, but only until your end.
"Barcoff, aren't you going to search with them?"
"No, its all apart of they strategy. They are the pawns and we are the highest pieces on the board. I'll wait with you for her."
"Barcoff, sweet , naive, Barcoff, your as much of a pawn as they are. Now go."
Breath, deep full breaths. Just breath. Concentrate. They'll be here soon and then you'll have absolutely no chance to get calm. If you're jittery you'll be like a newborn. Damn it Arabella, calm down! A twig broke from behind her, startling her. They were here. She would die and very shortly at that. No use fighting, just let them take you.
"Arabella."
"Jade! Jade what are you doing here? I told you to leave and to stay away."
"Did you ever love me or where you in love with the resemblance of my great grandfather?"
"Jade I will always love Willam, but the day I went to your house, I loved you. Which is why you need to leave. I don't want another person that I love to die because of me."
"I'm not going to die. Your going to make me a vampire,"
"No!"
"If you won't do it, Justine and Laurent will."
"No they won't."
"And how would you know?"
"Because they understand."
"I see. I'll find some way for you to love me and for me to always be with you."
"Jade, go!"
"By Bell."
"Goodbye Jade."
Arabella sat there, in the meadow, staring at the sunset. Waiting. Death was coming. The sun was blood red. Magda was coming and she wasn't happy. Her thoughts blazed like fire in Arabella's head.
"How much longer do I have to wait?"
"Not long. Not long at all."
"Magda" said Arabella aghast.
"So surprised? I thought you were ready for me to come and kill you."
"Oh. I was waiting for you, but I expected the whole clan to be with you. Or are they here hiding?"
"Oh, Bravo, Arabella, Bravo." Barcoff emerged from the trees, clapping his hands together. "Everyone come out and say good bye to Arabella."
In one swift movement the clan emerged, filling out the perimeter.
"Hmm."
"What?"
"Where is Justine, or Laurent or for that matter the Vanderbilt's."
"Gone. They left to rejoin you. They've always been on you side – I just charmed them to stay. I let them go, because of you."
"Hmmm, I highly doubt that. I bet you sent them away. Yes, that's what you did; you sent them away."
"Magda, they're getting restless."
"Barcoff, make the order."
"Leave now if you feel wrong about this. If you don't search for the betrayers and leave this one for dead. Have your will."
With that the clan went. Arabella saw them, they're flesh a ghastly white, stampeding toward her.
"They're weaker than me." She thought. "I drank Gerard's blood so therefore I have more strength and abilities than they do. I'll win."
Wave after wave of vampires came after her. In each wave thousands died. Magda began to look worried. Barcoff on the other hand only acted like he was, but inside he was praising Arabella. Only one more wave of an attack and then it would be Magda and Barcoff's turn. But that wave never came the others, who were smart, retreated back to Magda and Barcoff.
Magda came upon Arabella, fire burning in her eyes, fangs….BANG! The shot echoed through the woods. Blood and flesh mingled for the last time. Eyes looked up at the sky and a body. Barcoff held the gun.
Magda was dead. Arabella was alive.
"Why did you do that?"
"She was going to be the supreme ruler. I was Gerard's successor. I should have been the one in charge but she was going to keep it all for herself. So I shot her with the bullet intended for you."
"Thank you Barcoff."
"Everyone, we must burn the remains of our fallen comrades. And you have to find your friends." Arabella dashed into the woods, sending out messages to Laurent and Justine. Knowing that they would be listening. She ran for hours trying to find them, when she remembered the one place that they would go when things went wrong. The cottage. More specifically her family's cottage. When she got there, it was early morning and the sun is beginning to rise.
"Arabella. Is it over?"
"For the most part. There will be some who are still loyal to Magda and who will want to have revenge for her. Laurent, where is Jade and his parents?" As Arabella stepped foot into the dusty cottage, memories began to flood back.
"John, come in! It's time for breakfast. Arabella go wake up your sister."
"Yes mommy. Janlyn, it's time to get up. We're having pancakes."
Janlyn, Arabella's little sister, had chocolate brown hair and eyes as green as the forest that surrounded their home. As Janlyn reached to the sky, Arabella grabbed her little hand and pulled her from the bed.
"Come on Janlyn, if we don't get to breakfast, dad and mom and Christopher will have all the pancakes and sausages. Come on!! Arabella said impatiently.
"I don't want pancakes and sausages. I want to sleep and sleep and only wake up because of a prince's kiss."
"That's only in stories Janlyn. Life isn't lik…."
"Oh, sorry Laurent. I was just remembering." She said as she shook her head clear of the memory. Jade and his parents were in the back to rooms, just to the south of the stables.
The Vanderbilt's were in her parents room, on the west side of the house. Jade was in Janlyn's and her room. All of the toys and books, the few that they had, were covered in six inches of dust. Jade lay under the covers, sun just peaking in through the window, and shinning down on his face. As he began to stir, Arabella felt that she shouldn't be there when he woke. But right when she was about to walk out the door, Jade opened his eyes. The expression he had worn just a few days ago laid on his face No matter how much Arabella scared him, he still loved her.
"All rise in attention." The great wooden doors opened and the crowed turned. The elegancy of the day, dress, and woman rolled all into one. The beauty to overwhelming for the crowd to stand.
"I, Arabella Rose Swan, hereby rule this coven."
"And what do you wish, my queen?"
"I wish that all vampires return to their human forms. All except me. There will no longer be vampires. Go live. Be mortal."
As the vampires exited the room, the sun rose and the power and curse that was laid upon them lifted away.
"So, will the queen go to the prom with me?"
"Not funny Jade." Arabella said with a smile playing on her lips.
Eclogue
Three hundred years have past. Jade and all the other vampires are long gone, but their history stays here. My parents land has become a place of laughter again and I am no longer feared by the mortals. I'll stay here until nothing is left.
