i wish i could draw

a picture with words

one of everything i see

the sun has sunken

below the trees

transforming the sky

into a fusion

of cotton candy pink

and cobalt blue

and the only sound i hear is birds

a shortly sung soundtrack

stuck on repeat

and a jet flies

far off in the distance

and over the lake

leaving an orange colored trail in its wake

and it’s too dark for shadows

but there’s just enough light

trapped in the time

far past afternoon

and still before night

all of the stars are still in hiding

behind the dimming mask of day

the trees stir softly in the wind

oh, nightfall takes my breath away
