Kay Productions Presents
Circus Freaks
This story is an experiment to see how well it holds up. Depending on what kind of reviews I get, I may or may not continue. The writing is placid and a bit choppy, but easy to keep up with. Remember, I'm not used to this style, so it might not be my best story.
Summary: There's nothing more to a freakshow than, well, freaks. Right? Sticking one into a "normal" society throws off the balance, not to mention it pisses off the ringleader.
The audience claps loud for Sally. She is really hamming it up tonight.
Buzz stares proudly at the "Cat Girl" he has created, or rather had created a year or two ago when he put his last daughter in the hands of a scientist specializing in DNA. Within months, she had the agility, balance, and instinct of a cat. Sally currently ranked the list as his favorite circus act, partially because she raked in the cash.
Without blinking, Sally manages to walk the tightrope to the other side in a matter of seconds and jump to the wooden pole. The audience stares up as she climbs down to the floor headfirst. Sally is now about ten feet from the ground, but jumps without a care and lands perfectly on her feet.
The crowd goes wild. Many stand and applaud, and Sally takes it all in, proud that she has managed to impress such a large quantity of guests tonight.
However, her act is far from over.
Buzz steps over to the middle, and climbs the ladder onto his podium to address the crowd. Sally walks over to position just below him. "Ladies and gentlemen," he booms into his microphone, "Please, settle back into your seats and prepare yourself for. . ." He lets a dramatic pause pass by and they sit and pay closer attention. "The finale."
After his speech, Buzz takes a small vile out of his pocket, carefully pulls off the lid, and swallows the dark liquid inside. A moment passes, as the crowd waits to see what will happen. Buzz puffs out his chest and looks down at Sally. She is ready.
Gasps are heard among the audience, because Sally has just barely rolled out of harm's way and dodged the flames. Buzz blows again, spitting fire from his mouth in Sally's direction. Sally is unafraid, barely batting an eyelash as she jumps around the large tent, dodging the fire by mere inches. Within seconds, she has made her way back up to the tightrope. Luckily for her, the material is flame-resistant, and doesn't fall apart after burning in the fire.
Finally, the flames dull down, and Sally can rest for a bit. Again, she makes her way back down to the ground, hearing the audience scream in the background. Her chest swells with pride.
One of Buzz's clowns kindly weaves through the crowd, tipping his top hat to receive extra tips. Spare change and dollars are placed inside, so the clown politely bows to each of the donors.
Sally makes her way up to the top of the podium with Buzz, and waves to the crowd next to him. "Look how happy they are." Sally grins.
"You did do a good job on your last performance." Buzz whispers.
The rest of the "freaks" come back out, knowing the finale is over and fire is no longer a threat. The other two clowns, acrobatic twins, and the bearded girl make their way out. The clowns push a cage toward the middle inhabiting a lion. It sits idly in one corner, noting its surroundings.
Just earlier, Sally had sat upon the cage and talked to the lion as if it were a friend. Likewise, the lion responded back, and Sally seemed to know exactly what it was saying.
The freaks all bowed, then the audience left to drive on home.
And just like that, another show was over.
