A/N: Hey everyone! I know I totally JUST updated this...but I was in the mood, so I wrote the third chapter, too! :D Well I know this chapter is pretty short, but I like it, so I think you will too. Enjoy!
&SCENEBREAK&
“Oh my god! You’re kidding, right?”
“No. I’m dead serious.” Sam shifted her position on the bed so that she was facing Taylor. “Besides. I thought you would’ve found out by now,” she continued.
Taylor looked really confused. “What do you mean?” she asked.
Samantha shrugged her shoulders. “Well I figured Trent would’ve told you already.”
Taylor noticed that Sam’s voice quieted when she spoke about Trenton, which reminded her of the mishap that had just happened. She was too busy thinking about Logan that she had already forgotten. Then she realized something.
“Oh!” she said, startling Sam a little bit. “You told Trenton?”
“Well yeah. Why wouldn’t I? I don’t keep secrets from him,” she said. And then she added under her breath, “but maybe I should, because he doesn’t seem to have a problem with keeping things from me.”
Taylor sighed, of course she’d heard Sam’s afterthought. What she thought was whispering wasn’t actually very quiet at all. “Oh. Well everything makes much more sense now!”
“Huh? What makes sense?” Sam asked, the curiosity clear in her voice.
“Wait a second! WHY HAVEN’T YOU CALLED HIM YET?! GET TO IT, GIRLY!”
“W-what-WAIT!”
Sam was too late; Taylor had already snatched the piece of paper and dialed in the number. She was now holding up the phone to Sam’s ear, listening intently to the ring on the other side.
“Hello?” she heard Logan answer.
“Um, hi. It’s Sam.”
Muahaha. Mission accomplished. Now it’s time to get out of here, Taylor thought. She waved and smiled to Sam, gave her a thumbs-up sign, and ran out the door; ignoring the looks of anguish and pleading.
Almost immediately after she shut the door behind her, Taylor remembered that she’d shoved Trenton out the same door only about a half an hour ago. She wondered where he’d gone, and then the guilt set in.
Crap. She thought. I shouldn’t be helping Sam get together with Logan when I know how much Trenton likes her. This can’t be good.
As she argued with herself inside her head about the crazy love-triangle that was forming, Taylor found herself walking to the boy’s dorm building to talk to Trenton. She figured it was the only thing she could do after completely messing up today.
When she reached the room with the sign that said “TRENTON AND CADEN’S ROOM…KNOCK FIRST!” she didn’t even bother knocking, despite what the sign said. She just walked right in, and found Trenton lying on his back, staring at the ceiling. His roommate, Caden, was playing a very intense game of Soul Calibur on the XBOX.
She walked straight over to her friend, and glared at him when he looked up at her.
“What?” he asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me you knew about Sam’s crush on Logan?” she asked sternly, watching his eyes grow wide with surprise. Huh, maybe he hadn’t known after all.
“Sam has a crush on Logan?!” he asked incredulously, proving her last thought to be true.
“…oops. I thought you knew…Sam said she told you about the paper…”
“Wrong! I snatched it from her before biology. I knew she had his number, but who said anything about CRUSHES?!”
Taylor already knew that she’d just made things ten million times worse.
“Uhhh…” she didn’t know what to say next. Now that Trenton knew how Sam felt about Logan, he’d be even more heartbroken. And it was all her fault!
“Damn it,” he said. By now Caden had noticed what was going on and was staring at the two of them, trying to figure out what was happening. He knew about Trenton’s feelings for Sam - pretty much everybody except Sam did, since it was so obvious – but he still didn’t get it. “You were right. I should’ve just told her,” Trenton continued.
“Yeah, you should’ve. But that’s not the point, what are you gonna do about it? Sam’s in our room right now talking to him on the phone,” she said. “Which, I have to admit, is kind of my fault. I made her call him.” She looked down nervously, since she knew that Trenton would probably be mad at her for it.
“What?! Why’d you do that? What if he asks her out?” Trenton was starting to panic now; you could tell that he really didn’t like Logan. Or maybe he just didn’t like the idea of Sam having a boyfriend. “Taylor!” he almost shouted loud enough for people outside to hear. “You have to help me!” He was shaking her by the shoulders now.
“Okay! Okay! Jeez, Trent! Calm down, okay? Even if Sam does go out with Logan, you’ll always be her best friend,” she said.
Trenton let go of her shoulders. “Yeah, I know. But I wish I could be so much more,” he said, sighing. Taylor looked at him sympathetically, and then thought, I wish I had somebody who loved me as much as he loves Sam. She’s really lucky.
“Okay. I am really confused right now. Who’s Logan?” Caden finally spoke, causing both Trenton and Taylor to spin around to face him.
“Logan’s the cute new guy.”
“The delinquent one.”
“And Sam likes him, but Trenton really hates him.”
“Because he’s stupid.”
Caden took everything in, and then rolled his eyes. “Okay, well I don’t see why Trenton’s getting so upset. He’s lucky to have Sam as his best friend, even if she doesn’t like him the same way he likes her. He shouldn’t complain about what he doesn’t have. Instead he should be happy for what he does,” he said.
It was silent until Taylor finally said something. “Whoa. That was really deep, Caden. Who knew you had it in you?” she laughed, and Caden shrugged. “But he’s right, Trent. At least you know that Sam will always love you, no matter what. Even if it is only platonic love.”
“I have no idea what that means, but I guess you’re right. But I still don’t like that Logan guy, he seems like bad news to me,” Trenton said.
“Oh shut up, you’re just jealous.” Taylor laughed. “Now come on, I’m pretty sure Sam wants to talk to you,” she stated.
“Huh? Why?” he asked. But before Taylor could answer, he remembered how hurt Sam had looked after she found out he was keeping something from her. “Oh wait, don’t answer that. I know why. But I can’t talk to her about that now! I’m not ready yet!” he said, a look of horror on his face.
“Cool your jets, Sparky. You don’t have to tell her how you feel just yet. But you do need to talk to her. She was really upset after you left,” Taylor replied.
“Really?” Trenton looked surprised.
“Yes, really! She wouldn’t stop crying for like 15 minutes! And she was getting all mad at me, too. She thought you were mad at her and couldn’t understand why I couldn’t tell her anything. But I finally got her to shut up by reassuring her that you had your reasons and that you would talk to her soon.”
Trenton let a small grin escape on his lips, but covered it up quickly by responding. “She was really that upset? 15 minutes?” When Taylor nodded, he continued. “Man, I feel horrible. I really should go talk to her.”
He stood up, and Taylor patted him on the back. “’Atta boy! Go get her, tiger!” she said enthusiastically, and Trenton just rolled his eyes and left the room.
&SCENEBREAK&
Sam nearly forgot what she was supposed to say when she heard Logan’s voice on the other line.
“Um, hi. It’s Sam,” she finally managed to utter. But then she saw Taylor leaving the room and felt even more nervous.
“Oh, hey! What’s up?”
She wasn’t very experienced in talking to boys, unless they were Trenton, so she didn’t really know what she was supposed to talk about.
“Uh, nothing really. What about you?” she asked casually.
“I just finished up my homework. Did you study for the quiz we have tomorrow on the principles of design?” Logan asked.
“Huh? We have a quiz? Oh no!” Sam said. She’d completely forgotten. Actually, she didn’t even remember hearing about this.
Logan laughed. “Yeah, weren’t you listening?” Um, no, I was too busy staring at you, Sam thought. “But anyway, I bet you’ll do great, you had an art class last year, too.” He continued.
“Oh, I must’ve missed it,” she said. “Well…I already know the principles of design, I think…”
“Ha, yeah. Anyway, what are you doing this weekend?” Logan asked. Sam swore her heart skipped a beat, and the butterflies in her stomach went crazy. Was he going to ask her out?
But then she remembered…she had plans. “Oh. Um, I’m actually going shopping with Taylor this weekend. And we’re dragging Trenton along,” she said into the phone. Her voice was shaky because she was so nervous.
“Oh, okay. Is Trenton that guy that was giving you a noogie that one day?” Sam blushed.
“Um, yeah, that would be him.”
“Oh. Well maybe we could hang out some other time,” he said.
“Yeah. Another time,” Sam said. Her voice nearly cracked when she spoke. After that it was silent while both of them were trying to figure out what to say next.
“So –“ Logan began at the same time that Sam said, “Well –“
“Oh, you go first,” Logan said. Sam blushed again when she realized how nice he was being.
“Well…” Oh god, Trent’s going to kill me for this…she thought. Then she said, “Well I was thinking maybe it’d be okay if you came along with us on Saturday. I mean, if you want to.”
“Oh. Well, is it really okay? I mean, wouldn’t your friends be mad if I came?” he asked. Yes, Sam thought. At least Trent would.
But what she actually said was, “Um, I don’t think so. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind…much…”
“Oh, okay. Well, sure. I’ll come,” he said. Sam blushed yet again when she realized that she’d just invited Logan to hang out with her, Taylor, and Trenton this weekend. Awkward.
“Cool,” was all she could think to say.
Then she heard footsteps outside the door and assumed that Taylor was back.
“Oh, hold on a second,” she said into the phone. She covered the speaker with her hand and shouted, “Taylor?”
“Uh, no. Trenton.” The door opened and Trent walked in. He was looking at her nervously; maybe he thought she was mad at him. Which she was, of course, but willing to forgive.
“Oh. Hey,” she said, kind of awkwardly. “Um, hold on, okay?” She put the phone back up to her ear. “Um, sorry, I have to go. Trent’s here and I really need to talk to him,” she said.
“Oh, okay. I guess I’ll see you at school tomorrow,” Logan said. Sam thought he sounded kind of disappointed, but maybe that was just her imagination.
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
“Bye.”
She pressed the ‘end call’ button and turned to look at Trent, who had sat down across from her. Neither of them said anything for a few seconds; they just looked at each other, examining the other’s expression.
Sam noticed that Trent had a sad, almost desperate look in his eye, and she could tell that he really was sorry.
Trenton noticed that Sam was still blushing from her talk with Delinquent Boy, and that she was still somewhat mad at him.
“I’m really sorry, Sammie.” Trenton looked Sam straight in the eye to see if she would believe him, but she looked away. Instead she stared blankly at the sheets of the bed.
“I know,” she replied. He waited for her to say more, but that was it.
“Please forgive me! I can’t handle it when you’re mad at me. I know it was wrong of me to keep a secret from you, but this is something that you just can’t know…at least not yet. I promise that I’ll tell you everything eventually. So please?”
Sam looked up. Trenton looked like he was truly, genuinely sorry. He also looked like he really didn’t like fighting with her, which she could agree with. Trent was her best friend, and nobody likes fighting with their best friends.
She wasn’t sure what to say, but she knew she was going to forgive him. It was hard to stay mad at him for long, even when she didn’t understand why he couldn’t tell her. She looked up at the ceiling to the faded writing.
Trenton noticed her glance upwards and followed her gaze, landing on the words they had written together a few years ago. He remembered that day very clearly. He couldn’t help it; a smile broke out on his lips. Her gaze could only mean one thing – she was going to forgive him.
Sighing, she looked back at him, and gazed into his bright blue eyes that were now full of hope. “Oh, fine.” She hit him with a pillow.
“Hey!” he said, laughing. “That’s not nice.”
“You’re not nice!” she laughed, hitting him again. After she got her fill, she set down the pillow and smiled at him. “I forgive you. But don’t think you’re off the hook forever. You have to keep your promise,” she said.
“Of course. I swear,” he said.
“’Kay,” she smiled. “So we’re best friends again, right?” she asked.
“Duh! We never stopped being best friends,” Trenton said, pulling her into a tight hug. She responded warmly by wrapping her arms around his neck and laughing.
“Good.”
