Chapter One: Just My Luck
“Danielle!” A strong voiced man cried out loudly to a curly brown haired woman lying in his arms. He was a strong man with a gold like tunic and gold pants and cape along with red armor and a sword at his belt loop.
“Come on please! Wake up Danielle!” He begged her loudly lightly shaking her. He stared down at the beautiful woman in his arms with fearful teary baby blue eyes as his shaggy raven black hair blew with the soft wind.
“Open your eyes! You can’t just leave me like this!”
“Devin!?” He heard a woman call out to him.
He looked over his shoulder and spotted a blonde bob cut girl racing up to him. “Lesley.” He greeted softly feeling his heart sink with sorrow and guilt. He saw the fearful look in her purple gaze and knew she had seen what had happened.
“Is she alright?” She asked loudly as she stood behind him with tears starting to form.
Devin groaned and looked back down at the unconscious woman. Lesley noticed her friend’s actions and sucked in a breath. “No.” She took a step towards him. “Please tell me it isn’t true! She can’t be-”
“I’m sorry Lesley she’s…” Devin lowered his head shutting his eyes, “She’s dead!” He opened his gaze to stare down at Danielle as a teardrop fell on her pale cheek. “I wasn’t able to save her!”
Lesley gasped covering her mouth as the tears began to fall. “No…no…” She shook her head taking a step back, “This can’t be.” She squeezed her eyes shuts as she sobbed out. “This can’t be happening! My best friend cannot be dead!”
Devin’s blood began to boil continuing to stare down at Danielle while hearing his friend’s distress. His gaze went hard before slamming his fist into the ground, he yelled out. “Curse you Antis!”
BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP
A surprised shout was heard as a curly brown haired teen shot up from her bed as a car alarm went off.
She panted with her gaze on the wall. Once she had regained her breath and composure she groaned lowering her chocolate brown gaze to rub her forehead. “Aw man not that dream again.” ‘Just how many times am I going to have that dream?’
She took that chance to look over at her clock before gasping and yelped out loudly. “Oh no school!” She quickly hopped out of bed but her foot got caught in one of her shirts on her bedroom floor and tripped.
“AH!” She yelped out as she slammed on the ground.
“Ow.” She winced opening one eye in pain while gazing upon her messy room. “Man I should really clean this room up. I could really kill myself one of these days.”
The young teen got up on all fours and looked back at her clock that read 7:45am. She eeped and quickly got up. “I’ll worry about that after school!”
Once she was up her foot got caught again on the dame shirt and fell forwards. She grumbled as she kept her face in the carpet floor. ‘Bad luck Skyrah strikes again.’
An older black skinned man was swiping his diner floor while his wife took orders from some of their customers.
“Welcome to Cones’ Diner.” His wife greeted cheerfully with a bright smile as she rolled up to the table on her skates. She held up her little booklet as her shoulder length curly hair bounced on her shoulders. “May I start you out with drinks?”
“Yes I would like…”
Crashing was heard along with a scream and tumbles coming down a staircase. Everyone jumped at the sound and quickly looked over towards the stairs just as Skyrah came bumping down the stairs along with a trash can.
“Skyrah.” Mrs. Cones said softly in concern resting her honey brown eyes on the young girl.
“Ow.” Skyrah winced while rubbing her lower back. ‘This bad luck just can’t give me a break can it?’
She had changed into her school uniform for her high school. The skirt was black and reached just an inch before the kneecaps with a black vest with their school’s logo on the left side of the chest. Which was a pink heart with the initials EHS. The short sleeved button up shirt under the vest was pink which curved out her perfect hourglass figure while also forming out her perfect round and sized breasts. Her socks were pink as well and went up an inch under her kneecaps and black shoes.
“Skyrah?” She heard Mr. Cones speak up catching her attention. She saw him approach her while leaning his broom against the counter. His emerald green gaze met hers’. “Are you okay kiddo?”
“Oh yes I’m fine.” Skyrah said quickly as she got up. She smiled at him waving her hands slightly. “I’m fine really so there’s no need to worry Mr. Cones.”
Mr. Cones eyed her not sure if he should take her word for it.
“Skyrah!” The young teen jerked at the sudden loud call and met the emerald gaze of a beautiful twenty-year-old black skinned woman. “You better get going or else you’ll get detention again!”
Skyrah gasped at her advice and quickly grabbed a bread roll from one of the baskets on the counter and raced out the door. “Thanks Clover!”
Clover just chuckled as she watched the young teen leave. ‘Ah she never fails to amuse me.’
“What is with that girl with being late all the time?” She heard her father say softly catching her attention. “I mean didn’t we just get her a new alarm clock last weekend?”
“Oh dad you know that she forgets to set up her alarm, especially when she’s working practically down here the whole time.” Clover pointed out to him.
“But still you would think she would start setting up her alarm so she could actually make it to school on time for once in her life.” Mr. Cones went on.
His daughter shrugged. “Well dad there’s not much you can do about that, unless you are willing to go into her room and wake her up.”
“One of us may have too if it means getting her to important places on time.” Her father volunteered gruffly.
Mrs. Cones walked over towards them before looking up at the clock. “Oh.” She caught her daughter’s stare. “You should probably head out yourself. You don’t want to be late for your class now.”
“Yeah college classes aren’t always too forgiving if you are late.” Her father agreed with her mother.
Clover tied up her slightly curly mid-length black hair as she rolled her eyes. “Yeah yeah I’m going.” She rushed towards the door with her bag and gave her parents’ one last smile. “See ya later!” Then with that she was gone.
Skyrah ran down the sidewalk with her book bag bouncing on her hip with her curly mid-length hair blowing in the back. “I…must make it…before the bell rings!” ‘I don’t want to get detention again!’ She growled out in frustration. “Argh I should really learn to set my alarm!” ‘But I swear I thought I had set it up last night.’
Hi my name is Skyrah Love. I’m a seventeen-year-old girl whom is a senior at Evelyn High School in the United States of America.
The young teen stopped at a crosswalk waiting to cross along with everyone else heading to work and school.
I’ve been living here since I was eleven. I’ve been basically living with the Cones since that time as well. So you can probably say that they have been my guardians for a while now.
The light finally flashed allowing her and the other folks to walk across.
I appeared at their Diner’s front door and Mr. and Mrs. Cones didn’t want me to wonder around Evelyn all by myself since I was new to the area. Melvin and Susan Cones have owned their diner since they got married a long time ago. They have four kids Brandon, Clover, Jake and Keesha in that order. Brandon is twenty-three and is off at college in Virginia so we don’t see him as much as we would like. Clover is on her second year of college, she decided to stay here in Evelyn to go to school because she loves it here too much to leave, which I am grateful for since she is my best friend. Jake is just starting out college here in Evelyn but he’s staying in the dorms so we also don’t get to see him much either…well mostly anyway. Now Keesha on the other hand is still in high school with me only she’s a sophomore.
Skyrah kept on running down the sidewalk.
You’re probably wondering right now of where my parents are. Well they’re not with me right now. But that’s a story I’ll save for another time.
‘I can’t believe I had that dream again.’ The young teen thought thinking back to the dream she had earlier. ‘What isn’t this like…the millionth time I’ve had it? I swear I’ve been getting this dream at least three times a year since I turned eleven.’ She lowered her gaze. ‘Wonder why?’
Suddenly something stepped in front of her causing her to yelp out a scream as she tripped over the thing and fell flat on her stomach.
“Owwww.” She winced softly as she slowly sat on her knees.
“Oh I’m so sorry!”
“Huh?” Skyrah said turning her head to meet the gaze of a worried middle aged woman.
“I didn’t mean to step in front of you like that.” The woman apologized her eyes gleaming with concern.
Skyrah arched a brow and pointed at her. “I tripped over you?” ‘No that can’t be…unless it was her foot.’
“Oh no it wasn’t me you tripped over.” The lady lowered her gaze. “You tripped over him.”
“Mm?” She hummed confused by her statement. But it all made sense when she became face to face with a black retriever. “Oh now I see.” She looked up at the older woman. “I didn’t hurt him did I?”
The older lady gave her a reassuring smile. “Oh no dear.” Her expression then changed to a concerned one. “Though I sure hope he didn’t hurt you.”
“Oh no not at all.” She reassured the woman as she stood up smiling. “I’m just fine.” She waved her hand. “I’m using to tripping over things so my body is use to it.”
“You sure?”
Skyrah nodded. “Yes I’m sure so you have nothing to worry about.”
The woman just smiled at her gratefully. “You are such a gracious child.”
The young teen chuckled at her kind words before looking down at her watch. She gasped sharply as her eyes popped out. “Oh man!” She quickly looked at the lady. “Sorry I have to go!” She turned motioning to run down the sidewalk. “It was nice talking to you!”
“Likewise dear.” The woman responded.
She smiled before running but when she was a few feet way from the lady she tripped. “AH!” She yelped out as she slammed onto the ground.
The lady sweat dropped at the scene while hearing the girl groan. “Wow she really wasn’t lying about being use to it.”
Skyrah groaned sadly. “Why can’t things go my way for once?”
A young sixteen-year-old girl was waiting patiently by the high school doors watching them like she was waiting for someone.
‘Come on where could she be? Please don’t tell me she slept in again.’ She prayed before groaning glancing up at the ceiling. ‘Most likely that’s what happened. Man and I thought I was bad.’
“Hey Keesha?”
“Mm?” Her honey brown gaze caught the gaze of her two friends a boy and a girl. “Oh hey Ryan hey Claire.” She turned to face them. “What’s up?”
“Duh we’ve been searching all over the place for you.” Her light blue eye friend Claire told her with an amused smile. She closed her eyes as she pointed at her. “You are really a hard person to find when you don’t want to be found.” She gasped as realization hit her she looked at the straight black haired girl. “Did you not want to be found?”
Claire was a girl with shoulder length blonde hair with a slowly developing body and Ryan was a brown shaggy haired boy with a somewhat muscular body.
Keesha smiled. “Oh I don’t mind that you found me.”
Claire sighed in relief. Ryan changed his hazel gaze from Claire to Keesha. “Then why are you here waiting at the doors instead of looking around for us like you usually do?”
She sighed as she looked back towards the doors. She leaned her developing form against the school wall and said without thinking. “I’m just waiting for Skyrah since she did say she would make it here on time for once.”
“Skyrah?” She flinched at his questionable tone. “You mean Skyrah Love?” Ryan questioned her arching a brow.
“Yeah that’s who I mean.” Keesha admitted figuring it was no use lying to them.
“But she’s known as Bad Luck Skyrah! You can’t hangout with her!” Claire reminded her loudly staring at her friend with fearful eyes.
The young sixteen-year-old glared at them. “I am aware of that! I just have to watch for her to make sure she makes it here on time. Or else my parents would have a fit, considering she’s practically living with us.”
Ryan grunted rudely. “Well that’s unfair. Why should you have to be punished all because of what that dimwit does?”
“So are you saying you have to hangout with her from time to time all because she’s staying with you?” Her blonde friend questioned her.
She grumbled turning her gaze away from them. “Yeah…that’s right.”
Her two friends grunted in displeasure. “Well that’s just wrong.” Her male friend replied angrily. “You’re parents are so crude. Don’t they understand what a major outcast she is?”
“Yeah and if anyone were to catch you with her you would be mocked for life.” Claire reminded her.
The young girl groaned not appreciating them insulting her. “Yeah I know.” She shook her head. “But they just don’t get it.”
“Heh parents never do.” She heard Ryan say.
Suddenly the door slammed opening catching their attention as Skyrah came rushing in. “Skyrah.” Keesha said acknowledging her presence.
Skyrah took notice of her and her friends. “Oh thank goodness I made it time.” She began racing down the hall but didn’t forget to smile and wave at Keesha. “Hi Keesha.”
Keesha blushed as she went pass and her and her friends watched her.
“Thank god you only hangout with her at your diner or else your social status would be destroyed.” Claire pointed out to her.
Keesha groaned feeling guilty. “Yeah right…”
Skyrah yelped which caught their attention and spotted her as she fell over on the ground. They sweat dropped. “Yep be glad of that. She is a total doofus.” Ryan commented gruffly.
She lowered her gaze. ‘Oh Skyrah.’
Yeah as you can tell I have a bad case of bad luck. Every where I go something bad happens to me. Whether I trip over something or sometimes nothing at all or things fall on me or anything bad that you could probably name.
Skyrah walked down the hall ignoring the glares that she went pass.
“Hey look Bad Luck Skyrah is back.”
“Heh she is such a ditz why can’t she just transfer to another school.”
“Yeah she just doesn’t belong here. She’s a disgrace to this school.”
She grumbled while hearing her fellow students talk.
Oh this is a typical thing. Ever since all this bad luck started happening to me I haven’t really been liked at school. I use too but once the bad luck started to get worse they all backed away from me and started saying that I was cursed or something like that. Though I can’t blame them I mean who would want to be friends with a person with as much bad luck as me.
Skyrah looked straight down the hall. ‘I know I wouldn’t if I were them.’ She stopped at her locker and opened it. ‘But on the other hand I don’t think I would. Why would I do that to someone else? It would just be crude and it would make me just as low as everyone else.’
She started digging through her bag and locker. ‘But ya know it’s best this way. I don’t want to get anyone mixed up with all this bad luck that would just make me crude and I don’t want to be a crude person.’
The older teen heard people whispering beside her. She glanced over towards them to find them glancing at her and whispering to one another. Skyrah groaned. ‘Since I don’t want to be like them.’ She closed her locker and began walking away. ‘That would just be a nightmare.’
Keesha watched Skyrah walk away while glancing at the fellow students that whispered crude words about her. She lowered her gaze feeling her heart sink and clenched her fists. ‘Can’t they just give her a break?’
As the day went by Skyrah experienced all sorts of bad luck. In math class her pencil broke in half and couldn’t find any spares and it broke right in the middle of a test! In english her pen exploded in her face causing her face to be full of black ink right when she was working on her essay and now she has to rewrite it because the ink got all over her paper. In her history class her book cover fell off which now she has to pay for. In gym her gym clothes ripped when she put them on and she had to take another no change day, which may just bring down her grade. At lunch she found a cockroach in her food which made her not eat for the rest of the afternoon. Then in science they were working on an experiment and the experiment that she had been working on by herself blew up in her face and caused the whole room to go up in smoke. She had to stay out in the hall for the rest of the hour.
Finally the day was done and Skyrah was walking out of the school. She sighed. ‘Finally the day is done. I can’t wait to get back to the diner. Nothing bad hardly ever happens to me there.’
“Mm?” She hummed noticing something coming from the corner of the school. She heard a familiar laugh and smiled when she saw Keesha. “Oh Keesha!”
Keesha heard her name and groaned frowning at the sight of her as she noticed the older teen approaching her.
“Oh you would not believe the day I have had.” Skyrah began in her usual friendly manner.
“Oh it was so cool!”
“Huh?” Skyrah said suddenly hearing the extra voice and came to a stop when she spotted Claire and Ryan appearing beside Keesha.
Claire smiled at the black haired sixteen-year-old. She was blushing. “Oh I just can’t believe Scot the hottest guy in our grade actually spoke to me!” She squealed holding her cheeks still blushing. “It was like a dream come true.”
Their male friend grunted narrowing his gaze as he crossed his arms. “Don’t let this get to your head. He could have just talked to you because you were the one that bumped into him.”
Claire smiled up at him and pointed at finger at him closing her eyes with a pleasing look. “Oh but it was fate that we bumped into each other.”
“Yeah right and I’m a rockstar.”
The blonde teen huffed. “Oh you’re just jealous because no girl besides us ever talks to you!”
Ryan glared at her. “Shut up Claire!”
Skyrah groaned her smile fading at the sight of them and Keesha immediately felt her heart slam down into her feet.
Claire and Ryan heard their friend groan and noticed her staring at something. “Keesha?” Claire said her name before following her gaze. “Who are you looking at?”
She gasped and Ryan grunted rudely narrowing his gaze when they finally took notice of the seventeen-year-old.
“What do you want?” He asked her rudely. “Want to pass us your curse of bad luck?”
Keesha tossed him a glare but didn’t say a word.
Skyrah sighed turning her head away from them. “No why would I want to push this bad luck on someone else.” She tossed him a stare. “That would just be crude.”
Ryan grunted he was hoping to get some sort of reaction from her. “Heh like I would believe something like that.” He pointed at Keesha. “If you say you aren’t crude then convince her parents to have her stop looking out for you and waiting to see if you make it on time for once. Since frankly she is just getting sick of having to give up her social life in order to keep you from being the loser that you are.”
Keesha had flinched at his words. ‘No! I didn’t want him to blurt that out!’ She stared straight into Skyrah’s eyes and groaned when she saw the guilt in her eyes. ‘Oh no now I have hurt her. That was something I was trying to prevent!’
Skyrah stared down at her with a look that made Keesha’s heart sink lower. “Ah I see.” She bowed in respects. “Well then I apologize for being such a burden on you Keesha.” She straightened herself up to stare at her. “I’ll try to convince your parents to give you back your life.”
“Skyrah.” The sixteen-year-old whispered out.
The older teen turned and began walking away. She glanced back at Keesha. “See ya back at the Diner Keesha.”
The young girl took a step forward. “Ah Skyrah.” But the older teen ignored her call and continued to walk away causing the young girl to groan sadly. ‘Oh man I really screwed up this time.’
“Well there you go Keesha.” She heard Claire speak up catching her attention. She smiled. “Now you don’t have to wait up for her anymore.”
“And your social status is safe now.” Ryan reassured her with a smile.
She glared at him. ‘Hey I wanted to wait for her you idiots! Argh! I hate this! Why must everyone be so mean to her?’ She then ran from them.
“Huh Keesha? What’s wrong?” She heard Ryan ask her suddenly.
She glanced back at them. “Duh I have to go to the diner. My shift starts in a few minutes.” She began running again and shouted out to them. “And I don’t want to be lectured by my father again!”
Claire and Ryan watched her questionably before looking at one another.
Skyrah sighed as she walked along the sidewalk. “Should have expected something like that.” She closed her eyes sadly. “But what they said really hurts.”
The older teen gasped and quickly gently smacked her cheeks. “Hey get a hold of yourself Skyrah! This is no time for you to be all moopy!” She narrowed her gaze with determination and looked up at the sky with her fist held up in front of her. “Stick and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me! I won’t let these misfortunes get the best of me! One day they will all see what a great person I am and one day this bad luck will end and when that day comes they will all regret ever making fun of me!”
She paused for a moment before releasing a rough sigh as she hunched over. “I just hope that day comes soon.” She glared at the ground. “It’s not like I do this stuff on purpose and its not like I want this to keep happening.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “Argh! I am really getting sick of all this bad luck.” She subconsciously slammed her fist into a brick wall.
The teen groaned and slowly began to fidget from the sudden pain that was racing right through her. “Ow!” She finally said quickly pulling her hand away and waving it to help relieve some of the pain.
“Argh why did I go and do that for?” She lightly kissed her knuckles before sighing. “Guess I just wasn’t thinking.” ‘Guess I’m so sick of all this bad luck that I just wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings or my actions.’ Her head drooped. “Well ain’t this just dandy.”
Suddenly she bumped shoulders with someone as she walked pass. “Oh sorry.” She apologized softly not bothering to look up at the person and just continued to walk.
The person however came to a stop and turned his head as his baby blue eyes watched the girl and tilted his head.
Skyrah sighed. ‘But at least I’m going to the diner. That’s the only place that I know where they don’t judge me by my bad luck.’ She looked up at the sky. ‘That’s the only place that shows me any sign of respect and I appreciate that more than anything.’
“Skyrah!”
“Huh?” She said as she turned and spotted Keesha rushing up to her. “Oh Keesha.” She said softly.
“Oh Skyrah.” Keesha said as she appeared in front of her with an apologetic look. “I am so sorry about what happened at school. I should have just told them the truth.”
“Mm what do you mean?”
“Skyrah I didn’t wait there at the door because of what mom and dad told me, considering they never told me to.” She began to confess. “I waited there on my own free will because I wanted to talk to you. But then Claire and Ryan showed up and…I completely lied to them and made my parents the bad guys.” She closed her eyes as she lowered her head in shame. “I wouldn’t blame you if you are mad at me.”
“Now why would I be mad?”
“Duh!” Keesha replied loudly opening her gaze to glare at her sternly. “Because of what I did! What I’ve been doing to you since I started high school!” She lowered her gaze as her guilt started to rise making her feel sick. “And you don’t deserve that kind of treatment.” She raised her watering gaze. “So go ahead be mad at me I know I deserve it for treating you like everyone else at that school!”
Skyrah sighed as she slowly approached the young teen, which caused her to flinch slightly but lowered her head. ‘I deserve whatever she is going to do to me.’
“Keesha it’s okay.”
“Huh?” She responded as she felt hands on her shoulders. She raised her head to meet Skyrah’s cheerful face.
“I’m not mad. I could never be mad at you I know you didn’t mean to do that stuff on purpose. You just want a normal life and that’s perfectly understandable.”
Keesha narrowed her gaze. “But that doesn’t give me the right to treat you like that. So you should be mad at me I promise I won’t hate you if you do.”
Skyrah just smiled as she let go of the young girl’s shoulders. “You’re right I should be but I’m not.” She tilted her head as Keesha stared at her with unblinkable eyes. “Just the way you’re talking to me right now and how you are treating me now and at the diner proves to me that you really don’t mean what you say or you actions towards me. You just want be liked and make friends and that’s understandable.”
Her smile faded and looked at the young teen seriously. “All though I’m not all for you having to lie in order to be liked or having to make up excuses just to be liked. If your friends really like you then they will respect the other friends you have and take the time to get to know them instead of just judging them.”
Keesha groaned as she lowered her head. “But I don’t know if Ryan and Claire will do that.” She glanced up at her. “Those two can be quite stubborn.”
Skyrah sighed having no choice but to agree. “Yeah everyone at Evelyn High School are all pretty stubborn when it comes to stuff like this.” She lowered her gaze. “It’s like they are losing their sense of compassion and the will to accept one another no matter how different they actually are.” ‘Especially after the whole bad luck thing started to get worse.’
She shook her head and smiled at her. “But I’m sure one day they will see the light.” She tilted her head still smiling brightly. “They just need certain people to lead them in the right direction.”
“Are you implying that I should be this certain person?” Keesha questioned her while pointing at herself.
“No I’m not. But I think someone should start showing that type of behavior don’t you think?”
The younger teen sighed looking at her sadly. “Yeah someone should.” She then narrowed her gaze as she crossed her arms. “That surely would make life at school much more easier if someone would show them how to act.”
Skyrah chuckled before grabbing her hand. “Come on let’s get to the diner before your parents start to worry.”
As they walked away a teenaged boy with baby blue eyes and mid-length black hair peered from behind a tree. He came up beside the tree and leaned his arm at it as he watched the girls walk down the sidewalk. ‘So her school is having some issues.’ He narrowed his gaze. ‘I must inform mother.’ He then vanished.
A couple at one of the tables was chatting as Keesha rolled up to the table. “Hello.” She smiled brightly while holding up her booklet. “I’ll be your waitress now may I start you out with something to drink?”
“Oh yes I would like…”
Skyrah sighed as she finished whipping down one of the tables. “Finally that’s finished.” She grabbed her dish bucket and rolled across the floor and to the counter. ‘At least I can roller skate without falling.’
Suddenly her skate slipped on the floor causing her to yelp sharply as she fell on her bottom and dropped her bucket forcing some of the dishes out and crash on the ground. “Owww.” ‘Or at least most of the time.’
“Skyrah!”
She looked up as Clover came skating up to her. She looked down at her in concern. “Are you alright?” She held out her hands motioning the teen to take them.
Skyrah sighed accepting her friend’s offer. “Yeah I’m fine.” She rubbed her lower back. “I just hate my luck.”
“Well why don’t you go sit down.” Clover waved her hand towards an empty booth. Skyrah hummed staring at her friend questionably. “Not a lot of people are coming in today so there’s not a lot of tables that need to be taken cared of.” She smiled. “So why don’t you sit down and relax a bit before you have to clean another table.” She winked at her. “And I’ll bring you out something to eat my treat.”
“You sure?”
Clover nodded. “Yes I’m sure now go sit down.” She rolled away from her. “And I’ll be right with you.”
Skyrah nodded smiling at her friend but looked down at the floor and groaned when she saw the broken dishes. “Aw man.” She bent down to start cleaning it up.
“Skyrah?”
“Huh?” She responded as she looked up to spot Susan. “Oh Mrs. Cones.”
Susan smiled as she bent down beside her. “What happened?”
The teen sighed softly continuing to pick up the pieces. “To put it short my bad luck struck again.” She stared back at the older woman. “I promise you I’ll help you pay for new dishes they can come out of my paycheck.”
She shook her head. “Oh no dear there’s no need for that. I’m just glad you aren’t hurt.”
Skyrah sighed softly. “Yeah I know. But is there a way I can make up for breaking your dishes?”
“Really Skyrah its no big deal there just dishes.” Susan reassured her as she stood up while holding out her hand.
Skyrah took her hand as she helped her up. “But I broke many of your dishes over the years.” She lightly scratched her cheek. “Which I still haven’t paid you back for yet.” She lowered her finger. “Isn’t there someway I can make it up to you guys for all the stuff I have broken?”
Susan released a soft breath before glancing over towards the empty booth that Clover pointed out earlier. “Come on Skyrah.” She held out her hand to the young girl. “Let’s take a seat and talk.”
Skyrah grabbed her hand allowing her to lead her towards the booth.
“Please tell me what I can do to make up to you.” She pleaded to the older woman. “Or else I’ll never be able to sleep well tonight.”
Susan chuckled leaning on her palms. “But you already have my dear.”
“Huh?” Skyrah responded puzzled by her statement. “What do you mean?” She arched a brow. “What did I do?” She lowered her head and rubbed her chin. “I don’t remember doing anything.”
“It’s been seven almost eight years since you appeared at our doorstep.” Susan began catching the young girl’s gaze. She sighed softly. “And at that time my husband and I were in the middle of getting a divorce because for some odd reason we just couldn’t stop fighting. But then we found you at our doorstep all bloody, bruised and scared that Melvin and I pushed the fact that we were suppose to get the papers to take care of you and figure out what had happened to you.”
The older woman tilted her head. “Which come to think of it you never told us why you appeared to us like that.”
Skyrah’s eyes grew sad while lowering her gaze. “It’s just…something I never really wanted to talk about.” She looked up at her. “And I’m still not willing to talk about it at this time.”
Susan just released a soft sigh deciding to move on with the subject. “For the first week you refused to talk you just stared out your window and hid in the room that we had you in. But Melvin and I began to argue again and you began to question our children about it and they informed you about our problem at that time and you began to feel concerned.”
-FLASHBACK-
“Why are you and Mr. Cones fighting?” Eleven year old Skyrah asked Susan as she wrapped up her wounds.
“Huh? Now who told you that him and I were fighting?” She asked the young girl questionably with slight concern. ‘Oh no she didn’t hear us did she?’
“Clover and the others told me. But besides all that I heard you and Mr. Cones arguing.”
Susan sighed. “Guess my kids are just as worried about this as I am.”
“Are you saying you don’t hate him?” She asked tilting her head.
She shook her head. “No I don’t.”
“Then why are you two arguing and wanting to get a divorce if you don’t hate him?”
“Well Mr. Cones and I have been arguing a lot lately and I guess it’s because we are falling out of love.”
“You guess? You mean you don’t really know if you have falling out of love or not?”
Susan released a soft breath. “It’s complicated sweetie.”
“But you shouldn’t give up if you are still in love. All you have to do is talk calmly to one another and things will turn out alright.”
Susan shook her head. “It doesn’t work like that Skyrah. As much as I would like to talk to him like we use too but lately every time we’ve tried to talk things through we always end up arguing.” She lowered her gaze. “So why stay together if we fight all the time? No matter how much it breaks both of ours’ and our children’s hearts.”
“But…is this really what you want Mrs. Cones?” Skyrah went on. “If it isn’t you and Mr. Cones should fight for it. If you two really love each other you should fight to keep your love together.”
Susan looked at her in amazement but hummed in distress. “I…don’t think it’s that simple.”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“I remember that.” Skyrah put in remembering the memory. She tilted her head. “But then that night I heard you two fighting again only it got way worse than the rest of your arguments.”
-FLASHBACK-
Susan and Melvin were yelling and screaming at one another and Skyrah was running down the hall hoping to reach them before they did something that they would regret.
‘I have to stop them from fighting.’ She finally reached the kitchen and gasped when she saw Melvin’s shadow raise his hand up motioning to slap Susan.
“NOOO! STOP IT!” She screeched out as she slid inside the kitchen.
Susan and Melvin gasped immediately stopping what they were doing to look at her. “Skyrah!?”
“Stop this! Just stop this madness!” Skyrah panted as tears began to form in her eyes. “You can’t keep fighting like this! I know you two still love each other I can see it every time you look at one another. I don’t know what is causing you two to fight all of a sudden but you guys have to stop now! You guys must work this whole thing out! I know you two don’t want things to turn out like this or end this way!”
Melvin and Susan gaped in awe as tears fell from her eyes. “So please just work things out and bring the love back that you two once shared! I know it’s still there and you know it’s still there too!” She squeezed her eyes shut. “So please fight for it! Don’t let this end in hatred!” She sobbed as she opened her eyes to stare at them. “Love again if you guys believe and work together it will return to the way things were! So please don’t give up just don’t give up!”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
Susan smiled warmly at the teen. “And with those words you told us Melvin and I began going to marriage counseling to work out our problems and we kept our faith and we made it through.” She tilted her head. “And now we couldn’t be happier.”
“Yeah Skyrah.”
Skyrah and Susan tossed a stare over towards Clover as she rolled up to the side her mother was on and propped her knee up on the cushion with her arm on top of the seat. While also handing Skyrah a bowl of ice cream. “If it weren’t for you my mom and dad would have had a hateful divorce which would force us kids to separate and probably never see anyone again.”
Skyrah blushed in embarrassment lowering her gaze finding the table better to stare at. “I just said what I felt I’m sure anyone could have said the same thing.”
“Yeah I’ll admit I wanted to say that to them for months.” Clover confessed warmly with a smile. “But I never had the courage but you, Skyrah, had the courage to do so and we really owe you for that.”
“You see Skyrah you really did help us.” Susan cut in smiling happily. “More than you ever thought you did.”
The teen became redder. “But I just said some random words that were at the top of my head. I didn’t even realize what I was saying until the words had been said.”
“But those words made us open our eyes you made us see the truth that we really did love each other we were just blinded by whatever made us fight to begin with.”
“Come to think of it mom.” Clover spoke up while arching a brow at her mother. “Do you guys have any idea of what made you guys fight so much?”
“Mm?” Susan hummed before squinting her eyes a bit while rubbing her chin as she thought about it. “Mmmm actually come to think of it…” She looked up at her daughter, “I have no idea of what caused us to fight so much. It just happened and we didn’t know how to stop it.”
Skyrah stared at the two unsure of what to say.
“You are a really special girl Skyrah.”
“Huh?” She replied turning her gaze up to meet Melvin. “Mr. Cones.”
He smiled warmly at her. “I don’t know what it is but there is something very special about you that only we have noticed.”
Skyrah sighed shaking her head while moving out of the booth. “No I was just helping out my friends.” She rolled slightly to look back at them. “I was just helping out to repay you for how much you guys had helped me during that time and even know.” She turned motioning to roll away. “There’s nothing really special about that. It’s just something that you know you must do it’s like an instinctive action.”
“Well either way Skyrah we thank you for your kind words.” Clover spoke up catching her attention. She smiled. “You are really a true friend.”
“And let’s not forget that you are a great person.” Keesha stepped in as she rolled up next to her family. She smiled. “Considering how many times you have forgiven me for my actions lately it really proves you are great person inside and out.”
Skyrah just stared at them while feeling her heart warm up by their sweet words. “Oh guys.”
After her shift and closing the shop for the night Skyrah entered her bedroom and shut the door leaning against it before sighing.
“Oh man what a day.” She collapsed on her bed sighing softly as she laid her head in her pillow with her eyes closed.
The Cones’ words replayed in her mind. ‘Oh guys you have no idea how much your words mean to me. It’s what made me what to stay with you guys more than anything because you really felt like a family to me even when I’m not related to you.’
She turned facing her window as the full moon shined into her room. “I am so glad I came here. Since I’m sure if it weren’t for the Cones I probably wouldn’t have survived for very long considering I was just a kid during that time and didn’t know what to do.”
‘And they say I helped them when in reality…they were the ones that helped me actually no they saved me.’ Skyrah smiled before closing her eyes. “They are the ones that are really true friends.”
The young teen suddenly gasped and jolted up. “I can’t fall asleep with my clothes on!” She quickly sat over the edge of her bed and looked at her alarm. “Yes.” She pushed a tap. “I should put my alarm on as well.” ‘And maybe this time I will actually make it too school without having to rush out of here.’
“AHHHHHH!”
“Huh?” The town folks replied as they heard someone yell down the sidewalk. Suddenly smoke flashed pass them. “WHOA!” All the people got knocked down as something raced pass them.
“What in the world was that!” A man shouted as they watched the smoke fade with the person.
Skyrah raced at full speed while panting. ‘ARGH! Why didn’t my alarm go off! I swear I set it up just last night! Now I might be late again! GRRR I just hate this bad luck!’
She then tripped and Skyrah yelped out, as she was about to tumble over. “AH!” ‘No I don’t have time to be clumsy now!’
At that moment someone stepped in front of her and caught her. She grunted with her eyes closed expecting to meet the cement but finally realized that she hadn’t hit it. She opened her eyes. ‘Huh? Shouldn’t I have hit the ground by now?’
“Hey are you alright?”
“Huh?” She replied raising her gaze only to gasp as she found herself face to face with a blue eyed boy with long raven black hair. He was staring right at her his gaze filled with concern. “Whoa.” ‘Wow he has such nice eyes.’
She hummed questionably as she stared at his face. ‘Is it just me or…’ She tilted her head as she stared at him oddly, ‘Does he look…familiar?’ Her heart began to pound, which startled her causing her eyes to go slightly wide. ‘What?’
“Uhhh excuse me?” She heard him say immediately snapping her out of her thoughts watching him as he arched a brow. “Are you alright?”
“Oh um…” Skyrah replied slightly moving her head back remembering her had asked that earlier. “Huh?” She then noticed that her head and arms were leaning up against his chest. She gasped as her cheeks went red and made a nervous yelp as she jumped back from him.
“Oh yeah I’m fine. Never been better!” She chuckled weakly rubbing the back of her head as his gaze met hers’. She smiled nervously. “I’m a very clumsy person so I’m use to falling down so it’s really no big deal hehehehe.”
He eyed her suspiciously which caused her to be more nervous. “Um well…” She eyed him up and down he was very tall at least to her point of view and looked to have a very strong handsome face. He was wearing black pants with black shoes and a black long sleeved button up black shirt with a pink collar similar to her shirt’s and socks color and she could tell that the guy was muscular just by the way he was standing in front of her. But of course two buttons were unbuttoned which showed of some of his muscular chest.
Skyrah immediately blushed feeling her insides heat up. ‘Wow talk about handsome.’ Realization hit her causing her to gasp and shouted. “Oh man school!”
She raced across the crosswalk on the right side of him. “Thanks for the help!”
The seventeen year old boy watched her go and once she was out of sight he narrowed his gaze and looked down the sidewalk from which she had come from and scowled.
Skyrah rushed to her first hour class and stepped right into the door and almost tripped but quickly grabbed the doorframe. “Whoa that was a close one.” ‘At least I was able to prevent that one or else I would probably be laughed at right now.’
She sighed as she sat down in her desk. She closed her eyes pleasantly as the school bell rang signaling it was time for class. “Ah yes finally made it in time without falling or any sign of bad luck.” She groaned opening her eyes slightly looking at her desk with a bored knowing look. ‘But I shouldn’t get my hopes up I know something bad will happen to me during the day or at the end of the day.’
The boy flashed in her mind reminding her of that event. She hummed curiously at the memory. ‘Who was that guy? He looked so familiar but I don’t remember seeing him anywhere before today.’ She shook her head as she sighed lowering her head. ‘Maybe I’m just imagining things.’
“Good morning class!” Her cheerful teacher greeted happily catching her attention.
“Good morning Mrs. Ginger.” Her classmates greeted either gloomy or cheerfully.
Her middle aged teacher with curly shoulder length red hair and gray eyes smiled at them while holding her hands together. “Now before we go over yesterday’s assignment I have a new student to introduce who just transferred to this school yesterday.”
The class gasped at her announcement and immediately began muttering things to one another. Mrs. Ginger ignored their chatter as she looked over towards the door. “You may come in now.”
The door opened catching everyone’s attention as the student stepped in. Skyrah’s jaw dropped as her eyes went wide. ‘No way.’
There in the doorway stood the same seventeen year old boy that had prevented her from falling just this morning.
‘He’s the new transfer student!?’ Skyrah thought amazingly in her mind her gaze not moving from his which to her surprise were right on hers’.
He smirked. ‘Finally found you.’
