Chapter 21
Psychic

I looked out the window periodically to see that Ian was going well over the suggested speed. The thing about Greece is that when you are going that fast no one can catch you. Ian had an import car, something sleek and sporty and I would imagine that the Greek Police were used to seeing tourists speeding through the country. The scenery changed a lot while I slept. I had always fallen asleep in the car when someone else was driving. The motion and sound just lulled me right into a pleasant slumber.

The last time I woke up I noticed that I could see mountains in the distance. They were still small but I knew every minute they would get bigger and bigger. We didn't stop much on the way. Only two or three times and that was because Ian realized I was still partly human. We stopped and got coffee and a break from driving but I knew why Ian was in such a rush. He wanted to get to the prophet before Maria did. I didn't see how that was possible because we were more than half way there and she was probably stopped somewhere because of the sun.

"How are you doing?" he asked me looking over his coffee. We had stopped in a cute little cafe on the way and Ian was thrumming on the table with his fingers.

"I'm good so far. Mostly tired because of all the driving," I said just looking at my drink but not having any. Greek coffee didn't tend to agree with me.

"That's good," Ian said looking around at the other people occupying the cafe. There wasn't many, but they were all beautiful people. That was something I noticed being in Greece, most of the people were beautiful and tanned.

"Yeah," I said just watching Ian. It was easy to get lost in a stare when you were staring at Ian.

"What's wrong?" Ian said looking at me now.

"Nothing," I said just continuing to watch him.

"We should probably get going," Ian said standing up. I followed slowly. He waved casually at the guy behind the counter. He couldn't have been more than twenty but he smiled brightly and waved back at Ian.

"Do you know him?" I asked. Ian was actually smiling after we left the cafe.

"Yeah. from a long, long time ago," Ian said quietly.

"Is he... like you?" I asked him.

"Yeah," Ian said opening my door and letting me get settled before he closed it gently. Ian opened the driver's side door slowly, looking back into the cafe, and I saw that the guy behind the counter was staring at Ian without blinking. Ian nodded and closed the door. He started the car quickly and drove faster than normal. Had something been exchanged between the two guys while Ian had been walking around the car?

"What's going on?" I asked Ian after he had started the car.

"Nothing, we just need to get going now," Ian said quickly looking back once at the small cafe. Ian made dozens of what seemed like random turns until we ended up closer to the mountains than we were only twenty minutes ago.

Just then, like an electric shock running through me I jumped. I could see Maria, she was in a dark cave but I could tell it was her by the light coming through the opening of the tunnel. She was walking closer to me and I slowly backed away. Until I hit a wall, then I could feel my heart just pounding in my chest, like it wanted to escape by pounding right through my ribcage.

"Long time, no see," Maria said with a malicious look in her eyes.

"Yeah, I guess," I said glancing around trying to find a way to escape her.

"You know that I'm going to kill you right?" Maria said quietly but still it echoed in the cave. Then she pounced...

"Dayna, Dayna," Ian said shaking me. "Are you okay? Please say something."

"You have to change me, soon," I said with a thin sheen of cold sweat covering my skin.

"What? What was that about?" Ian said right in my face, I realized we weren't driving anymore and we were pulled over to the side of the road.

"Maria is going to try and kill me, in a cave...." I said and just then my phone rang. I looked at the caller id to see that it was my mother. I really didn't want to pick it up. "Hello?" I said trying to keep cool.

"Dayna? Dayna? Where are you?" my mother asked me urgently.

"Mom, I'm fine. Don't worry about me. I'll be home in a couple days," I said quietly into the phone I knew that she heard me though because it was silent.

"Are you doing drugs?" my mother gasped through the phone.

"No mom, I'm not doing drugs," I said with sarcasm because what was happening to me was so much different than drugs that it made me want to laugh.

"Well alright, I just want you to come home. You can't just leave...." Ian had closed the phone.

"Turn it off before she calls back, she'll just make it more difficult for you. This is necessary for you; you could die Dayna. And I don't want to be the one to kill you," Ian said with pain lacing his voice.

Just then I wondered if I really did know Ian. I obeyed what he said and turned off the phone but I wondered if his intentions were purely innocent. He seemed different, cold, and currently had the emotional capacity of an ice cube. I kept quiet because my sudden realization made me think that Ian was dangerous. He had never hurt me and he had actually saved my life but I still got the feeling that he didn't have the best intentions.

.

We drove in silence for the rest of the time, I could only hear the quiet hum of the radio. I was getting sore from sitting in the same seat for so long. We had been driving for hours and hours on end and I was getting to the point that I had a build up of energy from not moving. I glanced at the speedometer and it made me want to throw up, he was going almost 160 kilometers an hour even though it didn't feel like it.

"Are we almost there?" I asked quietly breaking the silence.

"Just about," Ian said starting to slow down. He stopped in front of a mountain. Well it was exactly a mountain but it was a humongous pile of boulders. "Let's go..." Ian said closing the door. I hadn't even noticed him getting out of the car.

"But its a huge pile of rocks!" I said, almost yelling at him.

"Come on you wimp. We need to get to the prophet," Ian said holding out a hand for me to join him.

"And she lives in a pile of rocks?" I asked him not moving my feet.

"Yes, and if you aren't going to come with me I'll pick you up and carry you," Ian said with a smile on his face.

"Fine," I said giving in. "I can't win either way. But if I fall and end up dying... I'm going to kill you," I said folding my arms over my chest and walking over to him.

"Don't be like that. That's no mood to be in," Ian said tugging on my arms to loosen them from my chest. "Come here you," he said pulling me to his chest. He tipped my head up and kissed me so sweetly that I was amazed that I had been scared of him earlier.

This time he didn't pull away after the first kiss but instead wrapped his arms around my waist and held me tight to him. He kissed me more deeply and I forgot where I was, when I opened my eyes I remembered that I still had to climb up a mountain. I was not happy about that.

"Let's go," he said releasing everything but my hand and we walked towards my impending doom.

.

A couple bruises and scratches later we reached a really creepy looking cave opening and I stopped just looking at it.

"What's wrong? Were here..." Ian said gently tugging but not actually pulling me.

"I know. But it just looks creepy..." I said knowing something was off about the cave, I could just feel it.

"I know it does. Wait until you see Heidi," Ian said chuckling. I assumed that Heidi was the prophet that Ian was dragging me to now. Ian was walking just ahead of me and holding my hand to make sure I didn't run away with my "tail between my legs".

.

"Hello Ian, Dayna," the prophet greeted us though I didn't see her.

"Heidi," Ian said in a loving voice he went straight to where she was sitting at her table that was around the corner. When I walked around the corner to see Heidi I was assaulted by candles and large amounts of printed fabric hanging on the walls. Heidi was sitting at a small round table in the center of the room and I went over to introduce myself, although she seemed to know my name already.

"Hi," I said with a little wave, I held my hand out to shake hers and once her skin touched mine I wasn't in the cave anymore.

It was cold and dark and I couldn't see anything but I could hear something moving in the darkness. There was a group of vampires waiting for a straggler to walk by so they could have a meal. I could hear faint whispers coming from them, they could smell someone coming and they could barely hold in their anticipation. I was disgusted by how excited they were. Just then someone walked by the alley and heard someone shuffling around so they looked down. It was Jason, I wanted to hide my eyes but I knew that it wouldn't do any good because I was having a vision. I had to watch as Jason was pounced on and eaten by seven vampires.

The present shimmered back into focus and I grabbed Ian around the middle.

"What's wrong?" he whispered in my ear so gently it was like melting honey.

"Jason is dead. Do you remember the first vision I had?" I said looking up at Ian.

"Yeah, someone got attacked by seven vampires. Right?"

"Yeah, well Jason was their victim. I can feel that he is dead," I said sobbing into Ian's shirt. Ian held me while I fell apart in his arms. He stroked my hair and said soothing words while the flow of tears just wouldn't end.
