It was complete darkness. She had been planning this for months. She smiled nervously as she began climbing the ladder attached to the ten story building. Tonight was her night. Or rather, the end of her nights.
She reached the roof and slowly walked to the other side. Two feet from the edge, she stopped. She stared out at the blackness surrounding her.
“What are you doing up here? You shouldn’t be so close to the edge.” Came a voice.
The girl didn’t turn to look. She knew that if she did, she might back down. ‘I’ve waited too long for this to back down.’ She thought to herself. She told herself that the voice was just her mind playing games.
The wind howled and whipped at her long red hair. She continued her walking, still at the same pace as before. When she was within one foot of the edge, she once again stopped.
“Yo, girl. Back up from the edge. It’s dangerous that close to it.” Came the voice again.
Still, she did not turn around.
She put her arms out like a bird and demurely embarked on her trek once more.
“What the fuck are you doing?” The voice rang out.
She heard heavy footsteps heading towards her, which caused her to falter in her steps. Just as her feet slipped past the ledge, she felt something grab her and she was pulled up. The young girl stood face to face with a boy about her age.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” The girl screamed at a high octave.
The boy stared at her, bearing a look of puzzlement, “I…Wait. What?”
“I said what the fuck is wrong with you?” She replied in short gasps.
“You were going to fall!” The boy yelled furiously.
“That was the whole point!” She screamed back brokenly.
With that, they both fell silent. The girl’s eyes were welling up with tears as she walked back to the ladder. Her night was ruined. She knew she’d never get the courage to be that close to the edge again.
The boy watched in silence as she went. He couldn’t tell if the events that were occurring were fantasy or reality. He slowly descended himself onto the concrete and drifted off to sleep.
