The Greatest Adventure of All
By: Mylinda Antoinette
Summary: A young woman moves to the West in the year 1896 to teach in a small town. She leaves in the hopes of finding adventure, but soon discovers that her greatest adventure has only just begun.
Author’s Note: I’ve always loved stories of pioneers out on the western frontier… Little House on the Prairie and other stories like that fascinate me, stories of how different things once were, and stories of how the neighbors always pulled together during hard times, wanting to help each other as much as possible because out in the untamed wilderness, they were all each other had. So I wanted to try my hand at writing one. My story may not be as good or as true to the times as the stories written by those who actually lived in those times, but I will try to keep it as close to reality as possible. My hope is that this story will entertain and even touch the hearts of those that read it.
Prologue:
My name is Isabelle. I moved to this land as a young woman, to teach in the school here. Back then, our school was a small wooden building, not much bigger than the houses we called shanties. Now the school is a tall brick structure, several stories high, and services many more children than I ever taught in the old school. In many ways, it saddens me to see the country so settled, though I am very glad that the children here are getting a good education.
If anyone had told me 60 years ago, when I first moved here, that I would end up here, where I am in my life today, I would have thought they were insane. Well, here I am, and there’s nothing I can do about my current situation. But doubtless, this is the reason you are here, to hear my story. Why don’t you pull up a chair and we can get started.
Hmmm, where to begin? I suppose the best place to start would be when it all started: the day I arrived in Mammoth Hills, Utah, which was only a small town along the Green River at the time...
I know this is short, but the prologue is just to get it started so I'll have a reason to actually finish the story. ; Chapter 1 will be up as soon as it's written! Please leave a review on your way out!
