I left my heart in a puddle at the fountain. Okay not really but it felt like it. Not only was Nick cute and nice and funny and… this could go on for a while. But he was also an amazing singer and was so good at playing that guitar thing.
The next day I went to the fountain again, thankfully it was on my way home or else I would have felt desperate. But Nick wasn’t there. It was some other kid playing another instrument. I had researched old instruments last night so I recognized it as a keyboard. I listened to it for a while.
I definitely liked Nick’s guitar better but this was nice too. It was like techno but softer and more defined. I was standing in the crowd of people listening when someone tapped my shoulder. I jumped but when I turned around I saw it was Nick. He had his guitar slung over his back and had a bowl of frozen yogurt in his hand.
“He’s good huh,” he said, nodding towards the keyboardist. I nodded, still a little shocked. “His name is Rick. He’s part of my band.”
“Cool,” I said. “I did a little researching last night,” I confessed. “What other instruments do you have in your band?”
“Oh well we have my guitar, Rick’s keyboard, um, Lou plays the bass and Stevie plays the drums,” he said. I nodded.
“The drums are the ones where you just hit them, right?” Nick laughed and I was worried I said something stupid.
“If Stevie heard you say that he would give you a lecture on the importance of the drums. But yeah, he basically just hits them. But he does have to have rhythm,” Nick explained.
“Oh, I see,” I said even though I was pretty confused.
“Well I got to go play,” he said as Rick the keyboardist finished the song. “Do you wanna sit with me again,” he asked. I nodded and followed him through the crowd. Rick gave me a funny look but didn’t say anything. I sat on the fountain and was amazed by the harmony between the guitar and the keyboard. Nick’s voice tied it all together and I could see people’s jaws dropping. I smirked, feeling a little smug that I had an in with this group.
The songs were faster than the ones Nick played by himself and I saw people begin to tap their feet in rhythm with the beat. It was amazing, this group of people brought together only because Nick and Rick were playing ancient instruments. I couldn’t imagine how many people would show up to their concert. I couldn’t wait.
They played a few songs and when they were done, they both bowed together. Some people clapped and some just rolled their eyes and walked away. I looked at my ZTime and saw that I was for dinner.
“Hey Nick,” I said. “That was amazing,” I continued when I got his attention, “but I really have to go. See ya around?”
“Yeah, see ya around,” he said grinning. He flipped his head to get his hair out of his green eyes and laughed a little before sprinting in the direction of my house.
The next day I sat with Nick at the fountain. And the next day. And the next day. Finally, a week after I had met him, he asked me out. He was going to take me out for frozen yogurt and a ZMovie. According to Soph this is a very acceptable first date. I was so excited.
Soph helped me get ready since my normal attire is, according to her, not date appropriate. She still couldn’t believe I was going out with “that gorgeous guitarist”. Her words, not mine. Although he was cute, so cute. Soph left half an hour before he was supposed to pick me up.
He knocked on the door and it slid apart to let me through. He was smiling and told me I looked pretty. Ah, the perfect beginning to the perfect date. We went to the ZMovie and it was so easy to be around him. We joked and he explained more about his band to me. He told me about how there used to only be bands but then what he called the “Techno Revolution” occurred and his was the only one. Well, he assumed his was the only one.
Then he took me home and I went inside. Soph called me about five minutes after I walked through the door. “You didn’t kiss!” I saw the shock on her digitalized face. “How could you not kiss?” I was confused. I had never really been on a date before and I didn’t know I was supposed to kiss him on our first date! Or was he supposed to kiss me?
“Soph I think you’ve read one too many of your mom’s ZBooks,” I told her. She just rolled her eyes at me before continuing.
“When he drops you off at your doorstep you are basically obligated to kiss. Unless you didn’t like him after all…” Now I rolled my eyes at her.
“Of course I like him. He’s smart and funny and cute—“
“Ah! Don’t go all lovey dovey on me,” Soph complained. I made a kissy face at her and she sighed. “So other than not kissing, it was a good date, right?”
“Right,” I confirmed, nodding.
“Oh Jamie you have a boyfriend!” I sighed.
“I guess so,” I said, smiling. “But I’m not going to see him until Monday,” I complained. Soph looked thoughtful.
“Oh I’m sure you’ll see him before that,” she said, grinning evilly.
“Soph…” I sighed. This was more than likely going to end badly if Soph had anything to do with it.
