Flight
(Ten Years Later)
Ziva sits in a busy cafe in Spain, under the hot sun. Her hair dances in the light breeze and her seemingly innocent yellow sundress hides a more sinister possession; her Jericho.
It was her first major international mission for Mossad. After her sister Shani disappeared, she had made up her mind to join Mossad, to join Komemuite. Her mother was disapproving but her father was proud and Ziva had her mind set in stone.
She was a particularly stubborn girl, a trait she had inherited from her father. It either helped or hindered her in life, right now it was hindering. It had been an hour and her target still hadn’t come but she had refused to give up. And now as she gazes into the busy Spanish streets through her tinted shades, she wonders how her life would have changed if Shani had stayed. It was the first thought she had given her sister in years.
Suddenly a smiling family at a nearby table caught her attention; there was a little girl of about 3 with long brown hair that reached all the way down her back and an infant in a carrier. The father had an arm around his wife and was laughing along with their joke. What caught her attention the most was the mother, she was more tanned and carefree and had aged in the past ten years but Ziva was sure that it was Shani, sitting there with Daoud, a wedding ring and her family. There was a striking resemblance.
Ziva noticed Daoud glance her way and then nudge Shani who then turned to look at her sister, a brief smile lighting up her eyes. Daoud raised his glass in a silent toast which she returned and they turned back to what they were doing.
A shrill ring interrupted her thoughts
“Yes?” Ziva answered her cell phone.
“We have acquired the target, Officer David, you may proceed.”
“Yes Sir.” Ziva said before hanging up.
Sighing, Ziva gathered her things and gave Shani one last fleeting look before leaving.
She finally had the closure that she needed after all those years. Her sister was safe and well and she could get on with her life.
