Chapter Two

Amber woke up dazed and confused. The first thing she realized was she wasn’t in the cabin anymore. She was in a van and Robert was with her, either sleeping or knocked out. She couldn’t tell. Her eyes widened in horror as she felt her hands handcuffed behind her back much like she was being arrested. Why would she be in the back of a van if she was being arrested? What did she even do that would get her arrested? A groan next to her brought her out of her thoughts very quickly.

“Robert?” She whispered. The boy yawned. Suddenly, he looked scared and like he was about to cry. He started to rattle the handcuffs and look around the van, as if he were trying to find a way to escape.

“Shhh. It’s ok Robert. Calm down, ok?” Amber had no idea if it was going to be ok but she needed Robert to calm down. Whoever had taken then obviously didn’t know they were up yet. She had a feeling they weren’t supposed to wake up.

“Where are we?” He asked in a whisper. Amber sighed and shrugged. She wished she knew. She had an idea but she didn’t want to think about that. He was dead a long time ago. Well, he’s supposed to be dead, she thought. This was him they were talking about. If he wanted everyone to think he was dead, he got it. If he wanted to kill her and Robert, he did. Well, she had escaped before. Why couldn’t she this time? “I’m scared.” Robert said, his voice cracking. Amber wanted so badly to wrap her arms around him and make his pain disappear. The handcuffs were a little in the way, though. Instead she gave him a warm smile hoping it would be enough.

She had to think. Why would he want her now? Simple; to kill her. Why? You see, there was a fortune. It was a family fortune. She and her brother were the only heirs to it considering her mother was the only daughter out of three who married and had children. As soon as she died, Amber and her brother Jack would split it. There was only one problem. Jack didn’t like the idea of sharing. He was so greedy; he wanted to kill his own sister for the fortune. Of course, Amber would never even think about seriously killing her brother. After all, he was family. How could she kill family? Apparently he could though because he had been trying to kill her for three years. It made her want to curl up into a ball and cry to think that her own brother wanted to kill her. Instead, for the past three years, she had to fight for her life (and her sanity) constantly.

About a year ago, Amber had hoped it was over when her mother had informed her that Jack was dead. She hadn’t exactly believed it though. Jack could do anything. He could easily fake his own death. The minute she said it was a car crash, she knew it was fake. Her brother was the best driver she knew. He also never drove on the highways where most accidents happen. He used back roads whenever he could. He said it was safer. She didn’t believe anyone. Now, she was right. Jack wasn’t dead. He just wanted less in the way of killing her. Amber sighed and bit back tears.

“Amber, are you ok?” Robert’s voice broke her out of her thoughts. She nodded numbly. She could tell by the look on Robert’s face, it wasn’t very convincing.

“You know what’s going on, don’t you?” He asked. Amber almost laughed. Of course she knew. Also, of course, he could read her mind and know that something was up. They could always read each other’s minds. Even back when they first met, there was always something between them. It was like they were soul mates. Now, Amber didn’t really believe in soul mates but she believed Robert was as close as it got.

“Yes. It’s my brother, Jack.”

“You’re brother?!” Robert almost screamed. Amber immediately shushed him and told him the whole story. Normally, she wouldn’t tell that easily but she figured since they were both going to die, she could let everything out. Well, almost everything. He was never to know about Mark. Ever. That was that. “Oh my God.” Robert whispered in a daze. His eyes were filled with sympathy and shock. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” He asked.

“Because everyone thought he was dead. No one would’ve believed me. Plus, he’s my brother. Who would believe my own brother was trying to kill me?” Amber explained. Robert nodded in understanding. She could tell just by looking at him that if this didn’t happen, he’d still have believed her. She highly doubted that.

“That sucks. Where’s he taking us?” He asked.

“I can’t answer that. Sorry.” She truly was sorry and she truly did not know where Jack was taking them, Knowing him, thought, it was probably some abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere. That way, he could get the job done without any suspicions. She sighed again. Her brother was smart but predictable. That’s how she survived for years. The guy seriously needed some new tricks.

Sure enough, five agonizing minutes later, she looked out the window and there was the abandoned warehouse on Wind Lake Dr. that her mother always told her to stay away from when she went to camp. Not that she was ever able to go anywhere near it at camp. Mark made sure of that. He was paranoid of her escaping. She probably would’ve done it too. Not in her younger years but now…why not? What did she have to lose?

The van came to an abrupt stop and she heard the doors open. The crunching of gravel, two sets of footsteps, and the back doors opening were the next things she heard. She swallowed a lump in her throat when she recognized her thieving brother and his boyfriend. Amber never understood what Larry saw in Jack. He was a greedy little bastard who was trying to kill his own sister. Apparently he was just as demonic as Jack though. He always helped in the attempts to kill her. She almost felt sorry for him being sucked into a world of lies, money, greed, stealing, and betrayal. Almost being the key word.

Jack reached back, grabbed Amber by the scruff of her shirt, and dragged her out of the van. Larry did the same to Robert. She landed on the gravel with an, “Ow.” Robert soon after did the same thing.

“Hey sis.” Jack said smirking. She glared at him, hoping to burn holes in his face from the intensity and heat of her glare. He didn’t seem to notice. “Long time no see.” Larry added. She wanted to kill him. Larry, at least. She still couldn’t find it in her to kill Jack, though. Maybe Robert could do it for her. “Nighty night.” Larry said in a sing song voice, laughing slightly. Oh shit.

The next thing she new, she was out cold…again.

oOo

When she woke up, she noticed two things. One, she was handcuffed to a wall. Two, there was a key. Another thing, there’s was a note right in front of her. It read:

I felt like playing a game with you today. On your left you’ll see a cell phone. She stopped reading for a second and sure enough, a phone to her left. On your right you’ll see a key. When you finish reading this note, you will have about 1:00 to get out of the building and call 911 before it blows up. That’s enough time to save one of you. Choose wisely. I, personally, am hoping you’ll let Robert go and you get blown to bits so I can have the fortune but it’s not up to me. It’s up to you, sis.

Have fun,

Jack

PS: This was Larry’s idea. I love him so much.

The last line made her gag. She couldn’t believe he would do this. She knew he was twisted but she didn’t think he was this twisted. All that Amber ever thought ran through that man’s mind was, Kill Amber. Get money. Woo!” That was it. Apparently not though if he was sick enough to play these games. She was going to kill him.

“Save yourself, Amber.” Robert said. His voice made her jump slightly. She chuckled.

“Are you serious? I really hope you’re not serious.” She said. Robert rolled his eyes.

“If you die, then he gets what he wants. If I die, he has to keep trying to kill you. Don’t give him the satisfaction. Save yourself. I’ll be fine.” Amber knew his words made sense but she didn’t want to make sense. She wanted to save her true love. She couldn’t live without him. Even if she did save herself, she’d be dead on the inside.

“But Robert, I can’t live without you.” She tried to plead with her eyes. It didn’t work.

”Save yourself, Amber. Please. For me.” After debating in her head, she realized something. This was his last request. If she didn’t leave now, they were both going to die. His last request was for her to live. She had to fulfill it even if it did kill her inside. She’d have the comfort of knowing he passed on in peace. She sighed and tears started to fall down her cheeks.

“I love you, Robert.” She said, her voice shaking.

“I love you too, Amber. Forever and always.” His voice was shaking worse than hers. She grabbed the key, her palms sweating, and unlocked her handcuffs. She fell to the ground and took a second to get up before taking the cell phone.

She walked up to Robert and kissed him. Hard. He moaned at the unexpected force and kissed back with just as much force. Her tongue danced in his mouth alongside his sending live wires throughout her entire body. Reluctantly, she pulled away. “Good-bye.” She whispered panting.

“Good-bye.” He whispered, also panting.

Amber ran as fast as she could out of the building and made sure she was at least three blocks away before calling 911. Right as she did, she saw the warehouse burst into flames, her heart breaking along with it. She screamed and crumpled to the ground in hysterias.

“911. What is your emergency?” She composed herself enough to talk.

“Warehouse…Wind Lake Drive…exploded…Robert.” She screamed his name and sobbed harder.

“All right, calm down. Warehouse on Wind Lake Drive exploded?” They asked.

“Yes…Oh God…” Amber had barely any warning before she threw up on the side walk, her tears mixing in. The person on the other end seemed to understand because they were silent for a second before saying anything.

“You also said a name. Was there someone in the building when it exploded?”

“Yes…Robert Green. He’s…dead.” The last word was barely audible. She doubted if the 911 operator even heard it.

“Ok. Now, are you ok?”

“Physically, yes. I’m fine.” Mentally and emotionally, she was dead.

“Stay where you are, we’ll be there soon.”

“Thank you.” Amber said before hanging up and standing up. Well, trying to. The minute her legs were fully supporting her body, they gave out and she fell over again. She gave up trying to stand. She knew it wouldn’t work. There was too much pain to move. At the same time, there was this burning emptiness that was starting to rage throughout her entire body. It ate at her heart but it seemed to completely ignore the pain. All she could feel was pain and emptiness. How that was possible, she didn’t know. She hoped she wouldn’t feel it all the time though. Amber felt so weak. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t talk. She could hardly breathe.

Robert was gone. The truth hit her like a ton of bricks. He was gone and he wasn’t coming back. She laid there on the ground, completely numb after a while even

as she started to hear sirens coming. Even as an ambulance drove up near her, she didn’t move.

She was broken; ripped to pieces. Even Mark couldn’t make her feel like this.

A sickening feeling in her stomach told her she’d have to deal with him when she got home.
