It was still dark at 3 a.m. on that October morning when Tristan decided to visit, climbing through my window, and waking me effectively with a nice pinch.
“Sky,” the rude bastard whispered, nudging me.
“What?” I said to end the violence, annoyed. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, and then blinked a few times to clear my vision until the fuzzy figure in my room turned into a dark haired seventeen year old boy in his blue striped pajamas. The only reason he’d even bothered buying PJ’s was to do what he was doing then: sneak into my room in the middle of the night (or morning) and abuse me awake. Back then I never considered the possibility of my parents waking up, and coming into the room to see their teenage daughter with a boy. Best friend or not, it was unacceptable, especially at three in the morning.
I looked at my clock and groaned, “Are you insane? When I said I’d wake up early to see you off, I didn’t mean this early.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” he responded, as if it gave reason for being in there at a ridiculous hour.
“Oh, so you decided to deprive me of it. That’s fair,” I said, scooting over in my bed anyways.
He took the space, going under the covers. We sat in comfortable silence knowing this would be the last time we’d ever do this together. I ended up breaking it.
“Are you ready for the Suburb, City Boy?”
He cracked a smile. “Without you? Never.”
“You’ll do fine.” I wasn’t sure who I was trying to reassure. “I can see your new school now, and your high school sweetheart, Anna May.”
Tristan stared at me amused. “Oh, yes,” I continued. “You’ll end up marrying her, of course, straight out of high school. She’ll give you three nice kids: two boys, and one little girl. While you go to a local college, she’ll devote herself to being the perfect house wife.”
“How are you going to give me my wife’s name, but neglect my children?” He told me playfully.
”I think I’ll leave that for you to fill in.”
He took my hand, and played with my fingers before locking our fingers together. “I’ll name my daughter Schuyler.”
I snorted. “You do know I was named after my grandfather, right? Besides, what if Anna May doesn’t like it? What if she wants Prudence, or Honor?”
“I’ll fight for it.”
I smiled. I didn’t know what I was going to do without Tristan and his perfect responses. He knew me so well.
Tristan was one of those people who were easy to get along with, which is why I knew he would be fine at school and with this move. That was what had me so afraid. I didn’t want him to go get new friends and forget all about me. He was the one person I could talk about almost anything with. At the moment though, I didn’t want to think about being away from my other half, my best friend. Not right now.
While my mind was in turmoil, Tristan squeezed my hand comfortingly, almost knowingly, “I’m going to miss you a lot.”
“That’s interesting, because I won’t miss you at all,” I lied.
“Not even a little?”
I scoffed. “Nope. Who’d miss a weird boy like you sneaking into their room at night? I really need to get a lock for that window.”
“Not after today.”
“Who says you’re the only boy who tries to sneak in my room?”
He snorted “Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot.” He glanced at my clock, and said in a change of topic that would just as soon change the mood as well, “I leave in two hours.”
4:03.
I unlocked our fingers. “I hate you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Get out.”
“Look, Sky I’m—“
“No, I’ve heard it. You’re doing this for your dad. You’re doing this because…” I couldn’t continue, out of guilt because of the circumstance. Why did it have to tear him away from me? “Just… just get out.”
“Sky…”
He sounded devastated, frustrated and I knew this wasn’t how he wanted to leave. I couldn’t look at him, and instead stared at my empty hands. I felt his warm lips on my cheek before he was off my bed and out of my room.
I followed his steps after he was gone, and slammed the window shut. I felt like crying.
I dropped on my bed, grabbed my pillow, and squeezed it tightly. It would be a long time before I would fall asleep, because in two hours I would lose my best friend.
