Bound
Eight year old Ziva David walked into a deserted house.
“Shani!” she called while flicking on a light switch, “Are you home?”
She got no answer, only an eerie silence.
“Ima, ima!” Ziva ran to Ariela in a panic.
“What is it Zivaleh?” her mother asked.
“Shani isn’t home,” Ziva felt her eyes welling with tears, “What if she’s gone again?”
“Come on,” Ariela picked up the now sleeping Tali, “She is probably with friends or something.”
Ziva wasn’t convinced but nodded anyway; a blanket of uneasiness had crept over her.
While Ariela was helping the still sleeping Tali in bed, Ziva crept into her sister’s room. Her door was shut and as a precaution Ziva knocked before waiting for a reply. When there was no reply she opened the door quietly and looked around.
Her eyes were drawn to a white sheet of paper on her sister’s desk but she ignored it. After checking Shani’s bathroom and finding some of her things gone and then checking for Shani’s ‘treasure box’ as Ziva liked to call it. She went to the sheet of paper on her sister’s desk.
Although her Hebrew wasn’t great she understood the words perfectly, Shani had left her when she had promised not to. Ziva felt tears slide down her cheeks and drop onto the paper in her hands.
That’s how Ariela found her.
She was on her way to check on Ziva when she saw a lone figure in Shani’s room.
“Zivaleh,” Ariela went to comfort her daughter, “Shani’s fine, she’s probably out with her friends.”
Shani wordlessly handed her mother the slip of paper.
Ariela read Shani’s note, her brow furrowing in confusion, “Where will she have gone?”
“Ima,” Ziva said with tears brimming in her eyes, “She said she wouldn’t leave me, she pinky promised.”
Ariela’s heart softened when she saw Ziva looking like the lost little girl she was.
“Come Zivaleh,” Ariela held out her arms and Ziva gratefully fell into them, “It’ll be okay, we’ll all get through this.”
“How ima?” Ziva whispered.
“I don’t know, Zivaleh, I don’t know.”
Ariela held Ziva until her sobs subsided and she drifted into an uneasy sleep. Moving slowly, so she didn’t wake her, Ariela carried Ziva to her room and tucked her into bed. After kissing her gently on the forehead, she walked out, closing the door softly behind her.
After checking on Tali to make sure she was fast asleep, Ariela walked onto her outdoor patio and sat in one of the chairs.
“Why would you do this to us Shani?” she whispered to the stars. “I hope you’re well wherever you are.”
