Holding The Past

These reigns you have,
Hooked through the skin of my back,
Aren’t enough to keep me here,
Even through all the blood and tears,
I work my way past it all,
The pain searing through my body,
As you crack your whip once more.

I pull your carriage,
Pleading my mind to let go,
Of all the pain you caused me,
And the feelings I can’t show,
And you just keep laughing,
Cause I’m too afraid to let go,
I’m afraid to bleed out.

These hooks keep me solid,
They keep me so strong, so poise,
You crack that whip louder,
Good God, I hate that noise,
And I keep pulling further,
Knowing one day soon,
Those hooks will tear through my skin,
And I’ll be free of you.

I have one question left in mind,
As I pull that carriage forward,
If this one’s let go,
Will another follow in its place?
I might get rid of you but,
Will the pain ever really go away?
