Chapter 2
Evie’s eyes opened slowly as she lifted her head. Another night of falling asleep at her desk had gotten the best of her, leaving her with a pounding headache and a sore neck. The sunlight streamed through the blinds ever so slightly. Reaching for her clock she groaned at seeing it read 6:00 a.m. The scratch of her chair as she pulled it out rang out in her head. Never again, she resolved, would she put herself through this again. It was back to the library for work then.
She had always going to the library for work. At least Evie could be sure she wouldn’t fall asleep there. She loved to go and pick up books, they were her inspiration and comfort after all. However, just the stares and whisperings of everyone else around her was enough to keep her at home most of the time. Regrettably, that was no longer an option. There was no way in h she was going to wake up to a headache again.
Ignoring the piles of clothes and items spread around the small apartment, Evie slowly made her way to the kitchen. She pulled out her Cheerios and opened the fridge to find nothing. Letting out a stream of cusses, she grabbed what appeared to be clean clothes from around the room. Finally, with some shoes, she headed out to store.
Quinn leaned against the wall of the building as Tony went off on his rant about this new girl he had meet named Alison. Tony always picked the same girl. Blonde, brunette, even blue hair, none of that mattered to him, they just had to be wild. Quinn always wondered how Tony kept grades up with the amount of partying he got into during the week, but he always found a way to manage.
His attention, was quickly diverted when he saw Evie flying out the door.
Evie spotted Quinn against the wall and with a sigh turned the opposite way. He quickly caught up with her.
“Hey.” He said, slightly out of breathe. She was a fast walker, he noted.
Evie looked at him and mumbled a quick hello.
With a stable breath and his feet in step with hers, he asked, “Where are you going?”
“Grocery store” She said as she tried to speed up past him. Much to her disappointment, he had no problem matching her pace.
“At 6 in the morning?” He asked with a smile, glad to see she was beginning to realize he wasn’t going anywhere just yet.
“I needed milk.” She said as she came to a stop at the crosswalk.
Quinn pressed the button for her as she began to reach.
She frowned, “I can do it myself you know.”
“I know, I just figured I would since I’m closer.” Quinn replied evenly despite her frosty attitude.
“You’re going to the store too, are you?” She asked with her eyebrows raised.
He nodded, “I still haven’t asked you my questions.”
She sighed and sprinted through the crossing as the little WALK man appeared in the light.
Quinn smiled as he ran back up to her, “You could at least wait for me.”
Evie cast her eyes down at him, “Oh I should? In case you haven’t noticed, I don’t often do things others think I should.”
