And It's Still January Three.
(Hour of the Shuns)
With Darren at my side, I walk the halls of school with my head down. Yuki and Sonya are still shunning me; Yuki out of fear, Sonya out of pure hatred. I loathed it. I cringed at Sonya's glares. Yet I couldn't sum up any courage to tell them. Not just yet.
Darren walked me to all my classes. What would I do without him.
Science was actually a relief today, since neither Yuki or Sonya are there to treat me like shit. But I saw them on the way to study hall. And other times in the hallway. Damn they're good at making people feel bad.
But I will not cave in. I will not. I REFUSE to.
I just can't wait to get back to Darren's place. Apparently his dad came home today, on account that his later flight is cancelled. Good to know we won't be having a microwave dinner tonight. Darren can't cook..not to offend his cooking skills...
I'm craving chips...hmm...this I'll have to take care of after school. I shall rumage through his cupboards until I find chips. I'm not fat at all...
So much for the chip plan. Couldn't even put a finger to the cupboard drawers. Darren's dad was bustling around the kitchen making supper. I'll just have to control my grumbling stomach til dinner time.
I run upstairs and pull out my homework. I'm consumed by it, until Darren comes in and jumps on the bed with me, watching me answer my social questions. I stare at him from the corner of my eye. I flip the page of my textbook, pretending I know what I'm doing...until Darren sees that I'm not writing anything.
"You're not really reading that, are you?"
I don't respond, and actually start reading the page in front of me. He sighs.
I answer another couple questions, and then stare at him again. I flip another page. I glance at it for a moment, and regain sight of Darren.
"If you really aren't focused on your homework, maybe you should take a break."
I look at him straight on. He smiles. "I know you want to. You've done 15 questions."
I sigh, and nod. "I should. And finish the rest of it later."
I close my textbook with my paper inside it to keep my page. I set it on the ground along with my binder. I plop my head on the pillow. Darren sits cross-legged, and looks at me, a smirk on his face.
"What? I ask.
He doesn't answer me.
"Really, what are you looking at?" Wow that was a stupid question. "Never mind..I know the answer to that."
He crawls across the bed and lays down beside me. He smells like cinnamon...yummm...so tempting...which makes me wonder what I smell like...
Darren puts his hand on my cheek, and put my hand over his. Just laying there. I never want it to end...
"Is that...lipgloss...on your lips?"
I chuckle. "Yep. Cherry flavour." I say, giggling.
What he said back was quite unexpected. "Can I taste?"
I laugh. "If you really want to.."
He pulls me close. I get a big wiff of cinnamon...god it smells good. He takes my head in both of his hands, and touches his lips to mine. It still sends shivers down my spine.
"Supper's ready you two!"
We hear Mr. Icer's voice calling from the bottom of the stairs, ruining the moment. We break apart and race each other to the kitchen. I win (considering Darren lets me), and drop down into a chair, almost tipping it over. Darren sits in the chair next to me, across from his dad.
"What an energetic young lady..." Mr. Icer says. "I'm thinking I'm going to have a fun time watching you two inhabit the house."
I chuckle and look at Darren. He smiles, and picks up his fork, twirling it in his plate of spaghetti. I do the same, and slurp it off. Darren gives me a glare.
"What?" I ask, confused.
"You can't eat faster than me." He says, a hint of competition in his voice.
"Wanna bet on that?"
"Well yes I do."
"Now you two, I don't think..." Mr. Icer begins. But he's cut off by the starting of our food race.
I scrape the remaining sauce off my plate. Darren still has a small portion left to gobble up. Mr. Icer just stares at me with pure awe. You never underestimate the stomach capacity of a girl. NEVER.
Darren finally finishes off the spaghetti on his plate and takes a moment to look at me. I grin.
"So...I think you owe me." I say with pride.
"Like what?"
I think about this for a moment. "I don't know. What do you have for me?"
He smirks. "I know what I can give you."
I raise an eye brow. He wipes his mouth with the back of his sleeve.
"Go upstairs, and I'll be right there."
I nod and run up to the rec room. I sit on the piano chair, and look out the window. There's a huge tree in their backyard. I watch some birds fly in and out of it, dashing through the branches and poking their heads out once and a while.
I hear Darren's footsteps on the stairs, the opening and closing of doors, and a thump before he enters the rec room and sits beside me on the piano bench.
"What was the racket for?"
"I tripped." He laughs. "On a shoe."
I supress a chuckle. I hold out my hand. "Where is it? Haaand it over."
He cocks his head. "What do you mean?"
I sigh. "Don't play dumb, Darren. You owe me, remember."
He nods. "It's not something I can hand to you."
I make a face. "What's that supposed to mean?!"
He chuckles. "Come here."
I didn't really understand, until he grasped my hand and kissed me lighty.
"Well. That was your idea of owing me?"
He nods. I laugh.
"Alright. I'll let that go. For now."
I get up and leave him sitting alone.
January Four.
(Hour of the Unexpected)
Darren and I stay at home today. I'm starting to hate school. Ever since Sonya and Yuki stopped talking to me.
I finally got my hands on a chip bag. This was so overdue.
Darren's sitting on the couch watching a documentary or something. Not interested.
I decide to finish my homework that I ignored yesterday. It's due monday so I'm good for a couple days.
I look at the clock. 12:56. Damn. Time seemed to go so slow. Darren's dad was out doing errands before Mrs. Icer came home from her trip.
I start searching the web for music lyrics. I know that was random, but when your bored, you'll do anything.
I look up about ten songs, read over the lyrics while listhening to the song, and then bordum set in again. Sighing, I close my laptop and jump on the bed.
I stare at the ceiling, thinking about everything that had happened in the last little while. I think so hard that I find my eyes slowly closing. And then I fall asleep, the world going black...
The door bell ringing woke me up. I cover my head with the covers, suddenly cold. I try to fall asleep again, but I hear thumping steps coming closer. Darren opens my door and shakes me, harder than usual.
"What's the..."
"Someone's at the door for you." Darren grumbles, sounding concerned.
I pull the covers off me, run past Darren, down the stairs, and open the front door. My body freezes in shock. My mind goes blank, my jaw stuck open, gawking.
I find myself staring at Mark.
His jet black hair, his freckles, his broad shoulders, his meaty body. Oh so familiar face.
He used to be my bestfriend. Who turned into my lover. Who left me, moved to Kansas with his family.
Darren puts a hand on my shoulders, his eyes blank and desolate. "Who is this. You never told me about him." He looks from Mark to me, and back again.
"He's just an old friend..."
Darren shakes his head. "I'm sure."
And walks back inside, leaving me and Mark outside to settle indifferences.
