It poured tonight

It poured tonight

All night we had been talking

Last night

Late night and I worked and missed seeing your flashing memories

But you told me that it was okay that you were leaving

And I believed you

Friends for 48 hours and we could be breathing lifetimes

And tonight I didn’t even try

But that’s the wonderful thing about rain

It was completely justifiable

And while we were on that one bench

Soaking wet and fully alive

You talked about her and I mentioned him

And we laughed at the people who thought of us

As anything more than what we were

Like all those stages we skipped

I stepped on cracks in the sidewalk the whole walk home

Just in case you were something I never knew

But on my doorstep we laughed

And you were walking to see another friend

In a torrential downpour

Or something on the approaching line

I was glad that at least we shared puddles

And left words and memories in every drop

Mother nature had to spare.
