When It Rains

By rainxface

Sophie stared blankly out the window. The birds humming and tweeting seemed so unreal after the hour’s events. Sam was on the hospital bed, IVs hanging onto every inch of his skin.

Sophie couldn’t stand to look like this, though.

Sam’s greasy black hair was sprawled everywhere, clinging to his sweaty face. His green-gem eyes were hidden by his closed lids. Sophie collapsed at his side. Her sobs were drowned out by the beeping of his slowing heart.

Raindrops started hitting the small window violently. Their pace matched the dripping tears from Sophie. As the sobs carried on, flashes of the wreck began to strike out everything in view. The car was flipped, a pool of blood beginning to gather. The blue paint was dull under the gloomy clouds. And Sophie saw herself, next to the crash on the sidewalk. Her mouth was agape, her eyes wide. She could clearly read the words racing through her mind as they were printed in her eyes. Fear and alarm were among the most common to keep reappearing.

Police sirens came next. The red and blue flashes did not move the girl. She stood still. A policeman walked up to her, and by the moving of his lips, was asking her what happened. Still the girl was silent. Not even a trace of recognition hit her face as the cop spoke on.

And then the ride in the ambulance. Everything was white but Sophie’s and Sam’s clothes. The workers inside were restless, hooking up the boy to every generator in the van. Finally the first tear fell from the girl’s crystal eyes.

Sophie flashed back into her present – her nightmare. And that’s when she realized the beeping had stopped.
