Descriptive Puddle
(That’s one detailed puddle you’ve got there…)
-+-
I didn’t know why it was there or how it got there, but I knew the second I saw it I was scared out of my mind. Staring down, my eyes wide as saucers and my mouth hanging agape, I eyed the puddle over another three times. But this was no ordinary puddle. The thick crimson substance expanded into a pear-like shape; seeping into the cracks of the concrete as a detached trail ran under a nearby dumpster into a drain. I’ve seen blood before… but certainly not in a puddle of all things.
I just got off the night-shift at my job; my car was in the shop so I had to walk home tonight. I thought taking a shortcut through an alleyway would be a good idea, but the second I saw this… I gulped; recoiling from the foul stench that emanated off the puddle. Judging by the slight discoloration, it had been sitting here about an hour or so. My mother is a CSI so this information was unequivocal to me.
But why in the world would there be a giant puddle of blood right here? I tapped by chin in deep thought. Recently there have been rumors of fight clubs’ in the area; maybe someone was beaten to death? I scanned the area as another trail ran to the drain under the dumpster. If there was a fight, the blood would be more spread out. It was as if something was actually dripping into it.
And then my mind wandered to the news last night: the reporter clearly stated “The police have discovered a fourth body tonight also with two puncture wounds in the neck. Witnesses still claim it was a so-called ‘vampire’ but until further investigation we ask you to travel by public transportation, avoid going out alone, especially at night, and keep your doors locked at all times.”
A car drove past, reflecting a temporary light on the blood puddle. My stomach dropped and I almost screamed. There, settled at the bottom of the puddle was the last thing I’d ever expect to see: a human eye! It was still even attached to the optic nerve! Stumbling backwards, I covered my mouth, feeling a wave of nausea envelop me.
Suddenly, a light ‘plit’ invaded my senses and I froze. I watched the puddle ripple and I silently prayed whatever added to the conspiracy before me was an illusion created by my fatigued mind. Heart racing, I looked up and stared in pure horror. There, dangling above me on a wire attached to a fire-escape, was the corpse of a man, pale as death, puncture wounds in his neck and left eye seeming to have been literally clawed out.
I gawked at the man and looked back at the puddle. It seemed so much more frightening now, as it’s almost majestic maroon color glinted beautifully in the moonlight—the eye at the bottom blending in with a shadow. My gaze shifted between the two about five more times… peculiar, horrific, stomach churning, faint-inducing, downright creepy, downright bloodcurdling… I dropped to my knees; leaning over I let out a dry heave—coughing at the protesting burn in my throat. A split second later, I scrambled up and after taking one last glance at that god-forsaken blood puddle, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me.
I’ll never look at a puddle in the same way again.
