Chapter 13
“Hello Casey Roberts,” a female voice that sounded very nasally hissed. I looked up and saw from the mirrors hanging in the girls’ bathroom that the girl that said my name was glaring at me.
What the heck did I do now?
“Um…hello girly,” I replied back with hesitance.
“You don’t know who I am?” the girl asked incredulously. I grabbed some paper towels and faced her.
“Nope. Should I though?” I looked at her carefully. “Turn to the side.” The girl surprisingly did. “Other side.” Again she did. “Now pat your head and say ‘Hullaballoo’.” I grinned when she moved her hand towards her head but stopped.
“Ugh, enough with the jokes freak. I’m Jasminda Jai.” She didn’t elaborate.
“Good for you, but I have classes to go to.” I made a move to step around her but she followed. I stepped to the right and she too followed. “Okay what do you want Jasminda Jai?”
“Adam.” She snarled. Then it clicked. After everything that happened in school, with my parents and at the dinner party (squeal) I had forgotten all about Adam’s could-be girlfriend that Nathan and Harry found him.
“Oh…” I spoke with a grin on my face. Hannah told me that the ‘could-be’ girlfriend, whose name I didn’t know then, knew that Adam and I were somewhat close. She told me that was all they knew; nothing about the kissing. Thank God.
“Yes ‘oh’. Nathan and Harry chose me as a possible girlfriend, not you. They think I have it all-” she said smugly. “-the looks, the body, the style and the personality.”
“Well then you shouldn’t be threatened by me, yet here you are trying to intimidate me. Hm, I guess that means you’re insecure.” I shrugged innocently. “See ya’.”
As I left I swore I heard her mutter ‘bitch’. I didn’t bother replying to that. One can only be immature twice a day and I wasn’t wasting one on her. I walked to homeroom, Belle, Hannah, Juan and Carlos were already there. I saw Belle texting under the table and smiling every so often. Only one word popped into my mind – Hunter.
I walked into class and saw Adam at the back of the class scribbling furiously on some sheets of paper. My face heated up when my thoughts derailed to the dinner event. Thankfully he hadn’t looked up and saw me enter. He looked pretty dishevelled. My eyebrows creased a little. The dinner event didn’t end too late so I didn’t know why Adam looked tired.
I shook my head and walked over to my old seat. “Ello’ poppet!” I shouted into Belle’s ear causing her to drop her phone and jump up on her seat. “Oops?”
“You did it again,” Hannah sighed. Juan looked horrified for a moment. Carlos was staring of into space.
I looked at Belle. “I played with your heart…” I continued.
“Stop. The. Torture. I had to hear that song on loop at home when it first came out, I don’t need a reminiscence of the experience!” Juan cried.
“Juan, sit down and be quiet!” Mr Finley boomed walking through the door. For the past few weeks Mr Finley had, thankfully, been away visiting his daughter who gave birth to twins.
I groaned and got up from my old seat. While he was away Adam and I switched seats. That allowed me to sit next to Belle. Mr Finley shot me a smug look, he looked pretty happy seeing my scowl. I walked between the desks to the back of the class where the pot addicts were already leering at me.
I watched as Adam stopped writing and looked up. I noticed that the papers were music sheets with blank lines. It seemed as though he was possibly composing his own song. I made a mental note to ask Adam about it later if I got a chance. His lips broke out into a smile. I gave him a small one in return but I knew my eyes said so much more. I titled my head to the front of the class. Adam saw Mr Finley and nodded. He put his papers together and got up from his seat. As he walked passed me our arms brushed and his hand touched mine slightly.
I had to think about all the horrible things in the world so I didn’t break out grinning manically. The tingle in my hand was still there even as Mr Finley called out our names for roll. I barely noticed him call my name; I was so up in the clouds.
I did however notice the eyebrow raised look Carlos gave me.
‘What was that?’ he mouthed.
‘Later,’ I mouthed back with a smile. As if already knowing it was something good he gave me a grin and a thumb up.
“You did what?” five voices cried. I bit into my apple and nodded. We sat ourselves outside in the grass because we didn’t want to see Nathan and Harry shoving Jasminda at Adam. I didn't bother telling them about what happened in the girls' toilets. I told them about what happened during the dinner event. I had tried to call Belle when I got home but there was no answer. I figured it was better to tell them all at the same time anyway.
“It wasn’t what I did, it was what he did.”
“Are you friends with benefits?” Juan asked unabashedly. I gave him a look. “Okay, you’re not.”
“Are you together?” Belle asked. I shook my head.
“Are you…anything?” Hannah asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
“Honestly, I have no idea. I don’t know what I am to him. He’s got the Alphas to think about, not to mention his music. I have school and college to worry about.”
“Forget the Alphas for a second. If they didn’t exist…” Carlos trailed off.
“If they didn’t exist then there’d be no problem.” I shrugged.
“Hey Vinny,” I greeted my lab partner. Vinny wasn’t a ‘geek’ or ‘nerd’ but he was very brainy. He would hang out with those that were equally as clever as him.
“Hi Casey. How are you?” he asked smiling.
“I am very well, thank you.” I was about to ask him how he was, but a voice called him from the back of the class. We both turned. I was surprised to see Jordan waving him over.
“‘Scuse me Casey.” He got up and jogged over to Jordan. I watched them for a moment. They looked so comfortable together. They even looked alike, Jordan with his light fair hair and Vinny also with his fair hair. Both of them were laughing at something Jordan showed him.
There was something that felt odd about the sight. Jordan was an Alpha. Wasn’t he only supposed to act like that with the Alphas and possible Alphas?
“I didn’t know you and Jordan were friends,” I more said than questioned when Vinny came back with a grin on his face. Vinny looked at me.
“Yeah, he’s a really cool guy. We’re friends.” I shot him a surprised look. “I know what you’re thinking, a geek and an Alpha are friends?”
I opened my mouth to disagree, even though that was what I was thinking.
“Casey, I know you think that the Alphas are a bunch of guys ruling the school, and yes maybe in the past years they were like that, but these sets of Alphas are real nice people.”
I snorted. “I doubt that.”
Vinny turned to face me completely. I turned too. “Why?”
I faltered for a second but recovered. “You know what they did to Harry’s friends. Made him join the Alphas and forced him to leave his friends.”
Vinny snorted this time. I shot him a confused look.
“Casey, Harry’s friends were druggies. They were high everyday and they were dragging Harry down too. The Alphas saw the potential Harry had, the sheer genius in him, and decided to pull him out the pothole.” He looked thoughtful for a moment. “No pun intended.”
I gave him a small amused smile.
“I had no idea…” I trailed off. “Harry looked so upset! Whenever he mentions them he has such a sad look on his face.”
“I know. He does miss them, I mean they were his childhood friends but he knows that if he hung out with them he could be like them; drug addicts and…losers.” I nodded.
“How is it I-” I started but Vinny cut me off.
“Never knew about all this?” he finished off for me. “They took your best friend away from you. Of course you were going to be angry at them. I suppose you used that anger and turned it into some sort of shield against them. You didn’t want to believe that they were good people.”
I nodded again. “You should be a shrink.”
Vinny blushed. “I’m planning on it.” I grinned at him.
“Thank you,” I said after a moment’s silence.
“No problem,” he replied smiling.
For the rest of the school day I had managed to avoid Adam. He wasn’t in one of the lessons we shared. Thankfully. After my conversation with Belle and the rest of the gang, I wondered whether Adam thought of me as something more than a ‘friend with benefits’. I was certainly not the kind of girl that just made out with a guy behind closed doors every so often.
I then thought about what Vinny had told me. I spent most of the day thinking back to anything bad this set of Alphas had done. The only thing I could come up with was Harry and his friends but Vinny had set me straight with that.
Was it possible that maybe it was only Nathan that was faltered? He was the one that started a fight with Hunter, the one that annoyed me while acting like we were still friends, the one that took Adam away from us, and the one who broke Belle’s heart. It was all him.
I walked down the empty hallways – school had been let out for a good twenty minutes – and trudged my way to the main entrance. My mum had given me the privilege of driving to school myself. Now that Adam was ‘a perfect young man’ I was in the clear. But, I did have to wear dresses and skirts to school. (I had a change of outfit in my bag, no worries there.)
I could hear voices around the corner but I didn’t think much of it since there were many after school activities. However, when I turned the corner I saw Nathan pushed up against a wall by a girl whose name I didn’t know.
I quickly jumped back before they saw me. I poked my head around and saw the girl trail her finger down his arm. Nathan visibly was affected. She leaned her head in close to his ear, “You know…” she stage whispered. The empty halls made it easy for me to hear her. “Jasminda isn’t the girl you think she is. She’s a whore. Why settle for her when you can have me?” she purred.
“You mean Adam?” Nathan managed out.
The girl cocked her head to the side as if to think about it. “Sure.”
I leaned back against the wall and gagged. Not wanting to hear more, I retreated back down the hallway I came from. There was another exit, further away from the car park, but that was better than walking past Nathan and anonymous.
I jiggled my keys in my hand as I walked towards my car. I saw two figures with very manly backs checking out my car. It wasn’t very impressive. I always forget what make and model it is. I clicked the button on my set of keys to unlock the car. The noise and flashing made the two males jump back and put their hands up in defence.
“Alright, who are you and what do you- Chad? Quentin?” I asked in disbelief. I looked from side to side. I noticed another Alpha walking toward me; Jordan. “Okay what is this? An Alpha meeting point?”
“You couldn’t have told me you found her car?” Jordan glared at Chad and Quentin. They both plastered innocent looks on their faces.
“Oh but it was fun seeing you walk up and down the car park,” Chad replied. Quentin nodded his head, his beanie shaking with it.
“Hello, still here.” I pointed at myself. The three boys turned to me.
“Oh yeah. Hi.” Chad greeted me.
“Hi Casey.” Quentin also said.
“Greetings,” Jordan grinned.
“Hi…” I trailed off uncertainly. “Is there something you want?”
The boys exchanged looks with each other. I started to grow weary. They all then turned to me.
“We need to talk,” Jordan said seriously. “About Adam.” I swallowed nervously.
Oh crap.
Eeep! We’re past the 300 mark! I’d like to thank the academy, my mum, my dad- No kidding.
Thank you sooo much to everyone who has reviewed, favourited, alerted, readed, likeded- Okay, I’ll stop before I start calling up the Collins Dictionary to add my made-up words. But hopefully you get my point! =) x
This is a week late because I wanted to shoot myself. Two weeks of school and I’ve already done three tests, I’ve got two days to read sixty pages of a novel and I have to do piles and piles of homework. AS levels are killer. -.-
Hope you enjoyed the chapter! Hope you’re all doing well! =D
