Love Destroyed by

(Song: Strawberry Swing by Coldplay)

Prologue

We lay back into the grass, our eyes fixed on the stars. I felt my heart fly around in my chest, and my lungs were panting – recovering from the last spastic laughing attack he’d caused me. I stared into the dark blue sky and I never wanted this moment to end.

I sensed his warm hand stretch out, I heard it running over the grass and I felt his rough palm grasping mine with all the strength he possessed.

I heard his breath, heavier than normal getting closer to me as I felt him roll over in the grass to lean over me. I looked to my left and stared into the endless soul next to me. I looked deep down into his brown eyes and saw my whole life mapped out there.

They were sitting
They were sitting
In the strawberry swing
Every moment was so precious

Him
He sat up in the bed, watching her chest slowly rise and fall. He desperately wanted to be inside her brain at that one moment, seeing all her dreams for the future. He wanted to put his arms around her, pull her close to his body and never let her go. He wanted to protect her from everything in the world that could, would ever hurt her. He wanted to be her everything, her meaning, her reason, he wanted her – like an illness he could never find a cure for – he wanted her.

But he had to go. It was time.

They were sitting
They were talking
In the strawberry swing
Everybody was for fighting
Wouldn't wanna waste a thing

Her

She woke up, looked around her and felt his warm side of the bed. He should have been there – he should have been in the space, not leaving a dent in the mattress instead. She lay back on the pillow and let the tears leak from her eyes. He’d gone. The day they’d both dreaded for months, his final day in ‘civilisation’ and he would be gone – to support a cause he didn’t believe – for a government he didn’t even fight for.

He left and he didn’t leave a note.

Cold, cold water
Bring me round
Now my feet
Won't touch the ground
Cold, cold water
What ya say?
It's such a perfect day
It's such a perfect day

Him

The noise rained all around, never ending, over and over he heard the sound of thudding against the metal home he had underground. Everything was so perfect, so brilliant, and so make-believe.He could feel her hair slipping through his fingers, he could hear her laugh, loud and ringing, he could smell her perfume like it was stuck to his clothes and he could see her – every imperfection he had adored for so long, staring him in the face like they were directly in front of him. He wanted her to be there so badly. He needed her to be there, to comfort and console him. He needed her. Waiting was out of the question, it was ridiculous. The pain and agony of denial; trying to tell his brain that they weren’t going to be together any time soon yet he desired it too. It hurt as much as his arms longed to hold her, his lips longed to kiss her, his eyes longed to see her – his whole body was joined to hers and they were parted.

Then it fell down next to him.

I remember
We were walking up
To strawberry swing
I can't wait 'til the morning
Wouldn't wanna change a thing

Her

She opened the door, expecting to find him, her face aglow with delight. Instead, she saw him, a name accompanied by a sneer in her regularly tasteful thoughts. The man this all came down to, the reason he was gone, the reason they were apart, the reason he left. She saw glistening crystals falling down his cheeks – he was crying? He never cried – unless.. no. NO NO NO.

The news reached her brain and she fell – fell to the floor, kept on falling, down, down, down.

He was gone, and he was never coming back.

People left, but they returned.

But he was gone. He was away. He was – she daren’t think the word. She couldn’t exist in a world where his smile, his radiance, his blissful happiness did not affect her. She couldn’t exist in a world where his brown, beady, beautiful eyes were not openings to her future. She couldn’t exist in a world where his arms weren’t there for hold her.

She couldn’t exist – yet she felt she had to - for him.

People leaving all the time
Inside
A perfectly straight line
Don't you wanna curve away
It's such a perfect day
It's such a perfect day

Epilogue

She walked stiffly to the front of the long church, her eyes so filled with tears; she scarcely saw where she was going, whose arm comforted her next or where she was. All she knew was that she had to do this for him. She had to be the strong one now.

She stood behind the lectern, cleared her throat, and with a voice thick with sadness she spoke as clearly as she knew how.
“He died so we could live. He fought so we could forever remember his name. The solider would not die in vain. The man would not die without being remembered. The husband would not die without knowing I loved him. He has not left me; he is waiting in the next place – his hand ready to hold mine, sat on the strawberry swing. He is forever here, with me, with you, with everyone. He protects you from the hurt, he shields you from the pain, and he loves you forever. I will never forget him, and he will never lose the place in my heart. I love him now, I love him tomorrow, I love him forever. Goodnight my protector."

And with that, the tears began to fall.

Now the sky could be blue
I don't mind
Without you
It's a waste of time

And here I am, back again! Or, I'd hope so anyway.

I was listening to Coldplay and I fell in love with this song, and I felt this oneshot idea I had rather fitted. I hope you know what time period it is (WW2) but it doesn't really matter to be honest. :)
