This is Villanelle style poetry, also written for my Creative Writing class. I'm more proud of "Anne Bolyen" than I am of this, I don't like this form too much, but I still like the way it turned out. It coincides with "Anne Boleyn" in a way. This poem is set years after Anne Bolyen's death, the subject of it being the battle that took place between the French and English in the port town. There were more merchants there than anything, and a lot of people ended up dead or captured. This is set whilst Mary Tudor, or Bloody Mary, is queen.
Calais
The battle came in dark of night
and in their hands they held a blade.
The grip upon the sword so tight
their faces leering in their plight,
as they continued with their raid.
Their wickedness prolonged the fight
while they slashed at victims with their might
and the people were all laid
to death. In the dark of night
The enemy brought fire for light
as the innocents fled from what they had made
while their homes were taken by “true right.”
Blood filled the air and sight
while the men stood and bade
the women to leave and flee with night.
As morning dawned so ended the fight,
the battle came to a close as the remaining men paid
with their capture. The enemy was alight
with victory as they led the prisoners from the bloody site.
