“I’ll talk to you later then, bye,” Eve whispered into her phone, despite the fact that everyone else had probably already gone to bed.
“I love you.”
“I love you too,” Eve smiled, “Night.”
“Good night,” Her boyfriend, Chris, said before hanging up. They had agreed on him hanging up first to prevent the whole who would hang up first argument. Although deciding on that was quite a disaster, until Eve threatened that she wouldn’t call him if he wasn’t going to be willing to hang up.
Eve quietly turned off her phone and set it on her night stand so it could charge while she slept. She lied down on her bed and for some reason couldn’t sleep. It seemed oddly quiet and a light came from the crack under her door. It was probably just her brother getting a midnight snack, since it was only four minutes to midnight. She turned onto her side, something still didn’t feel right. Well it was her first time sleeping in this house after all.
She sat up and looked out her window. It was her first weekend staying at her father’s house. She hadn’t minded the divorce for her parent’s used to always fight, but now that they were split up, it seemed to be a lot more peaceful. There were times though when she missed being a family.
Her door opened and she turned her head in surprise to find that it wasn’t her brother who was up, but her father. “Can’t sleep?” He asked as he closed the door behind him and sat down beside her.
“I miss Chris,” She said wishing she could call him and talk to him some more. The thing that sucked about going to her dad’s house for the weekend meant she couldn’t spend time with her boyfriend.
“You’ll see him tomorrow,” He said patting her on the head.
“I suppose.”
“Would a glass of milk make you feel better?” Her dad asked her as he stood up knowing that she would say yes.
Eve nodded, “Thanks.”
“Anything for my little angel,” He smiled before walking out the door. Eve frowned, she was almost eighteen and he still called her ‘little’. Her door soon opened again and her dad entered with a glass of milk in his hands. She took it from him and began to drink it. It tasted odd for some reason and she handed it back to him filling a bit dizzy. Something wasn’t right and she began to feel scared. She turned to look at the phone sitting on her night stand but it was a complete blur.
Suddenly Eve felt strangely hot and she closed her eyes trying to figure out was happening, but couldn’t. Her breath quickened and her body tensed. It felt as if something had gone inside her, but she didn’t feel any pain, yet she couldn’t breathe. Everything ended quickly and she opened her eyes, but she still couldn’t see correctly and felt very exhausted. She felt a pair of lips against her forehead before she dozed off.
“Wake up! You’re going to be late for school!” Eve stirred in her sleep. She didn’t feel very well and her brother’s yelling didn’t help. They were twins, yet he always acted as if he was older. She crawled out of her bed and stopped in terror as she saw herself in the mirror. She had no clothes on and she knew she hadn’t gone to bed naked last night. She tried to remember what happened last night, but it was all a blur and then she suddenly turned white, her dad had been in her room last night.
“If you don’t come out in a minute, I am going to come in there!” Her brother shouted.
“Shut up!” Eve exclaimed as she threw a pillow at the door and sat down on her bed to cry. She forced herself to stop crying for she really would be late for school and though she didn’t feel like going, she didn’t want to stay alone in this house with her father. She quickly got dressed, packed her suitcase, and ran out the back door to her mom’s mini van to avoid running into her dad. Her brother had already claimed shot gun, but she didn’t care.
“What took you so long?” He asked and noticed that the spots around Eve’s eyes were a bit red as if she had been crying. He wanted to ask her what happened, but since their mom was driving them, he decided to wait till they were alone later.
“Do you want me to pick you later?” Eve’s mother asked as they climbed out the van.
“We can walk home,” Her brother said before Eve could voice her opinion.
“Eric!” A group of guys waved at Eve’s brother and he wished they hadn’t noticed him.
“I’ll talk to you later then,” Eric said as he reluctantly walked over to his friends. Eve wanted to find Chris and tell him what happened, but at the same time she didn’t want to. She couldn’t tell him, besides she didn’t know if her father really did sleep with her, but she did know, and that’s what made everything worse.
“Hey! I missed you!” Chris came running toward Eve. He was rather tall and lanky, which would have made him a good basketball player, but he chose to be an Einstein instead. Eve hugged him and wanted so bad to cry, but couldn’t, instead she smiled and he kissed her as if nothing had happened. “Did something happen?” Chris asked sensing that something was wrong.
“It’s nothing,” Eve said wishing he was a basketball player for then he wouldn’t have noticed that she wasn’t feeling too well; instead he had to be a science whiz.
“You can tell me anything you know,” Chris said a little hurt, but knew that the reason she probably didn’t want to tell him was because it might hurt him.
“Are you busy tonight?” She asked as the bell rang.
“No, you want to come over?”
“Can I?”
“Yes,” He smiled and kissed her, “I’ll walk you to class.”
“But you’ll be late,” Eve protested as he took hold of her hand.
“I can be late once,” He said as they made their way through the crowd of students, “I rank number one after all.”
“I hate it when you do that?” She frowned. Though he was genius, he could be a bit cocky about it.
“I know,” He smiled as they stopped; they had arrived to her first class, which was English. He then gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before running off to Chemistry.
“I’m going to Chris’s after school,” Eve said as she met her brother at his locker. Their lockers were unfortunately next to each other due to the fact that they were twins and shared the same last name.
“Did you…”
“Yes I called mom and she said it was alright, you’re supposed to pick me up at nine,” Eve finished as she grabbed her back pack just as Chris walked up.
“Hey,” Chris waved at Eric. Eric frowned and left for he had been hoping to talk to Eve after school. “I don’t think your brother likes me too much,” Chris said as Eve laced her fingers through his.
“He’s my older brother, he’s not supposed to,” Eve said as they walked out of the school building.
“He’s only older by like a minute.”
“Why does it matter if he likes you or not anyway, I like you.”
“I love you,” Chris smiled and Eve kissed him. She had forgotten about last night until now and she began to feel nervous around Chris, despite the fact that she’s been alone with him a ton of times before, they had dated for about a year now.
“Your parents will be home right?” She asked.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t they be, did something happen?” Chris asked concerned for she had never worried about them being home alone before.
“It’s nothing,” Eve said as Chris unlocked the front door of his house. It was a huge two story house, which never surprised Eve since everyone knew that Chris’s parents were both doctors. His parents greeted her as they normally did and then they headed up the stairs to his room. Chris closed the door, which he normally did for his parents trusted him, but Eve felt very nervous.
“So what’s up?” He asked as he sat down on his bed and Eve cautiously sat down beside him.
“It’s nothing, don’t worry about it,” She said suddenly not wanting to talk about it.
“Eve,” Chris said taking her hand, “We’ve been together for over a year now, you can tell me anything.”
“I can’t…” She began and bit her lip. They may have been together for awhile now, but she had never cried in front of him before, well during the movies she had, but not like this.
“I love you,” He whispered and hugged her.
“I’m sorry,” She began to cry for he made it so easy for her to talk to him, yet so hard at the same time.
“For what?” He asked as he handed her a tissue.
“I can’t tell you or anyone,” She said before she blew her nose.
“Alright, I won’t pressure you to then,” Chris said as he used his hand to wipe away the tears on her face.
“Sorry.”
“It’s alright,” He smiled, “As long as you’re alright.” Eve smiled though on the inside she wasn’t alright and she was afraid that wouldn’t be.
“See ya tomorrow then,” Chris smiled and kissed her. Eric honked the horn on his car to split them up.
“Sorry about that,” Eve blushed, embarrassed by her brother’s actions.
“It’s alright,” Chris said giving her one last kiss before she ran down the rock path and into her mom’s red mini van, that Eric was driving.
“What was that for?” She asked as he began to drive.
“You can kiss him tomorrow,” Eric frowned, “Besides I wanted to talk to you.”
“About what?” Eve asked as he parked the car into the garage.
“Let’s get to our room first,” Eric said as they entered the house. They still shared a room since their house was small. Their mom was already a sleep and Eve went into the bathroom that was connected to their room to change.
“So what is it?” Eve asked as she walked out in her pajamas and sat down on their bed.
“Did something happen this morning?” Eric asked sitting down beside his sister, “We’re twins, I know when something’s wrong.”
“You’re the same as Chris,” Eve said curling herself up in a ball for she had been trying to forget last night.
“So he knew as well,” He frowned realizing that Eve obviously didn’t tell her boyfriend anything either, “You know if you don’t tell me, I’ll find out.”
“Don’t worry about,” Eve said crawling under the covers to go to bed. She didn’t want to talk about it, she just wanted to forget.
The week went by quick and the weekend came again. Eve had managed to forget about last weekend, but now the fear had returned as she climbed into the car with her suit case. Eric noticed that she looked rather pale, but didn’t mention this for he didn’t want to worry his mom for the weekend.
“I’ve missed you,” Eve’s father said as he hugged her and it felt strange. Luckily he let go when he noticed Eric follow her in. He gave Eric a pat on the back, “I’ll let you two get settled in then.”
“Can I sleep with you tonight?” Eve asked Eric once her father was out of sight.
“Why? I thought you always wanted your own room.”
“Please,” Eve said and Eric knew something fishy was going on.
“What’s going on?” He demanded.
“Is everything alright?” Their father interrupted.
“Yes,” Eric said before Eve could respond.
“Lunch is ready if you’re hungry then,” He smiled at Eve before leaving. Eric went to his room then and Eve had no choice but to go to hers.
The day went by too fast for Eve for she was dreading night. She called Chris and talked to him for a bit since she was too afraid to sleep. Now it was near midnight again and she left her room afraid that her father would come to her room again.
“Eric?” Eve questioned as she opened her brother’s door. He was still awake and reading a book.
“What are you still doing up?” Eric asked as she closed the door and walked over to his bed.
“Can I sleep with you?” She asked, “I can’t sleep by myself.”
“Eve, did something happen?” He asked setting the book on the nightstand as she lied down next to him.
“I just can’t sleep by myself,” Eve mumbled as she pulled up the covers feeling safer with her brother beside her. Eric sighed as he turned out the light; he wished she would just tell him what was wrong.
“Breakfast is ready,” Her father said as they walked out of Eric’s room. “Did something happen last night?” He asked as ne noticed that Eve had slept with Eric.
“I couldn’t sleep, that’s all,” Eve said feeling somewhat guilty for her father had to probably pay more in order for her to have her own room, yet she still felt afraid of him.
“You could always come to me too you know,” He said and Eric wasn’t sure if he was imagining it or not, but something very odd was going on between his sister and their father.
“She’s used to sleeping with me since we shared a room until now,” Eric defended.
“I almost forgot,” Their father smiled, “Now let’s go eat.”
It was not Sunday night, the same night as last weekend when everything had happened. Eve hadn’t called Chris, afraid her father would be awake and catch her for she wasn’t allowed to use the phone past ten. She got up to go to Eric’s room again hoping that he would still be up, but ran into her dad as she walked out her door.
“Can’t sleep?” He asked and Eve froze in terror.
“I want to sleep with Eric,” She managed to say as she tried to squeeze her way past her father, but she couldn’t.
“Take this, it’ll help you sleep,” Her father said handing her a pill and Eve realized that that must have been what he had put in her milk. “What’s wrong? It’s just a sleeping pill,” He said and Eve took it from him afraid.
“I need something to drink.”
“I’ll get you a glass of water then,” He said as he walked out the door and Eve waited till he was out of sight before running to her brother’s room. She opened it and closed it, making sure it was locked.
“Eve? What’s going on?” Eric asked as he watched her frantically lock the door. She ran over to him once she was sure the door was locked and handed him the tablet that her father had given her. She began to cry and Eric threw the tablet into a trash can by his bed. “Let’s get out of here,” He whispered turning out the lights, he was trying hard not panic for Eve was already scared. He grabbed his phone and opened the window in his room. “You go first,” He said letting Eve crawl out the window. They were luckily only on the second floor. He made sure she was climbing down the escape ladder alright before crawling out himself.
“Eric?” Eve questioned as he arrived down ladder.
“Come on,” He wrapped an arm around her and walked her down the street. She was shivering from the cold since they were both still in their pajamas. They continued walking and Eric pulled out his phone to call someone for help. He wasn’t sure if it was right or not to dial 911 in this situation, but he did.
A month had passed since the police car had come and picked them up. Eve’s mom had sent her to therapy to help her recover. Eric would some times go with other, but most of the time Chris went with her. Her dad was no longer allowed to be anywhere near her and was still going through the court process of deciding his jail time.
“How are you feeling?” Chris asked as they walked out of the school together.
“Better,” Eve smiled and he kissed her.
“Do want to come over?” He asked.
“I have to practice my violin, we have auditions tomorrow.”
“You can practice in front of me. I can be your judge.”
Eve giggled, “Alright, I’ll call my mom.” Once she got permission they headed over to his house, just like every other day.
