Mute

By Sarah Keech

She sits there and stares at the board.

The Only thing she does is stare

And write, write, write.

Her pencil scratches on the paper

Scritch, scritch, scritch.

That’s the only thing I ever hear.

Her pencil, but not her voice.

She is Mute.

She goes through a pattern.

She touches her hair, then her pencil,

Then her paper.

I can’t stand that she doesn’t speak.

It makes me wonder what

She writes on her paper,

I stand

To go and say ‘Hi.’

She replies with a nod.
