A/N: No, I haven’t fallen off of the face of the Earth, no matter how good that may feel right now. I just…haven’t been writing, I guess. This was an idea I got after riding out one night. There’s no particular pairing, use it to your imagination.

--

They sat in silence, staring at the waves crashing against the wet and soppy sand. The smell of sea salt suffocated the air, and she closed her eyes and lightly sniffed, a small smile crossing her features as the aroma invaded her senses. It’d be hard to tell if her face didn’t light up in the dark night.

He studied her face. His heart broke, knowing what he had to do later on.

Break her heart.

How could such an angel look so fragile and be so strong? She went through many hardships, and none of them seemed to affect her much. But he was sure that this would break her; and that in turn broke him.

He looked up at the sky. Thick precipitation clouds were hanging above them, slowly engulfing the moon in its darkness. He sighed. He knew he’d have to get this over with, whether he liked it or not.

“Babe,” he called softly, slinging his arm lightly over her shoulder.

“Hmm?” she answered, her eyes still closed.

He frowned. Damn her for looking so… pretty. Pretty wasn’t even the word for it, it was just the only word his brain could think of, seeing as how he was nervous as hell. He looked up again; the clouds were swallowing at the moon much quicker now. For some reason, he looked at this like a clock. He was running out of time.

He placed his finger underneath her chin, and turned her head to look at him. “Uh, I need to talk to you about something.”

She saw the worry reflecting in his orbs, and a pensive look crossed her features. “What is it?”

“Uh… I… think that we should…,” he stuttered. Damn. This was supposed to be easier. He looked up at the clouds. The moon was gone now. He was out of time. “I think that we should… see other people.”

There. He said it. And he felt like crap because of it. Wait, no. He felt like dirt now. The look of horror that crossed her face was unspeakable. He looked away, not being able to deal with the emotions playing vividly on his girlfriends face.

But, something shined down on her. A bright light that made her creamy skin look pale. He looked up. In the middle of the dark clouds, the moon shined right down onto them; like a spotlight. He gritted his teeth. Even if they were on the beach all alone, this was the most crowded and uncomfortable situation he’d ever been in. But he was making a breakthrough. He still had time.

“But why?” she asked, her tears streaming full speed down her face.

“Honey,” he started; not sure of how to say what he wanted to. “I love you… I love you so much. But I’m not in love with you anymore. Not the way that I used to be.”

“What am I doing wrong? I’ll make it right, I promise!” she vowed, taking his hand into hers and clutching it for dear life. “Just please don’t leave me! I can’t live without you! You mean the world to me, and I love you so much…”

That did it. She was crying. He didn’t say anything, just watched her. He didn’t know what to say.

“What do you want me to do?” she asked him again, her eyes piercing his. A shock ran down his spine. “Do you want me to beg? Do you want me to get on my knees and freaking beg? I will! I swear, I will!” she sobbed and moved down onto her knees in front of him, her knees cold from the freezing sand. “Please! Stay with me. Is it because I haven’t been interested in… intimacy lately? I’ll do whatever you want, baby, please! Please!”

And she crumpled down onto the floor in a sobbing heap.

He sighed and leaned down, hooking her under her arms and picked her up easily. “Stop crying,” he instructed softly. Of course she paid no heed to him. He looked up. There go those clouds again. He only had about two minutes to make this right. “Look at me,” he forced her gaze onto his. His heart skipped a beat when he saw how puffy her eyes were. “I don’t want to do this. I love you more than anything in the world. But I can’t just love you. I need to be in love with you, and I’m not. I don’t want you to be in a relationship where you’re holding up your part of the deal, and I’m not. You deserve so much more; so much better. I’m so sorry, honey.”

Between sobs, she spoke. “I…promise… that I’ll… do… better… just… one more… chance… to make this right.”

He shook his head slowly. “I’m sorry. I just can’t.”

“Well then… one more kiss.”

He sat there for a moment. Her lips, her perfect lips. They were always so soft.

Without a warning, she leaned up and pressed her lips to his, putting her heart into it. She couldn’t lose him, she couldn’t. He meant too much to her, and she was letting him know exactly how she felt.

She sighed in content as she felt his arms wrap around her waist, pulling her closer to him. It was only when she noticed the warmth of his body against hers that she was previously freezing. But as she continued to put her heart and soul into that one kiss, she disregarded it.

They eventually pulled away, and she opened her eyes slowly, reaching her hand up to stroke his smooth face.

“Don’t leave me,” she whispered.

And she felt his warm hands unwound from her waist. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“Please…” She pleaded more with her eyes than her words.

But he disregarded her and stood up. “Goodbye,” he whispered before turning around and waling away briskly. He could see her face crumble and he didn’t even have to look at her to know it.

She looked up at the sky. The was no moon. Only clouds. And soon, it started to rain. She was alone.

Well that was depressing. Reviews appreciated.
