The breeze played through her hair; allowing the golden curls to dance in the gentle wind. Her soft, white skin was cool from the pleasant weather. She sat alone against a tree trunk; her stunning blue eyes carefully watching a mother duck with her ducklings gently glide over the small pond that lay before her. There was a calm silence, only every-now-and-then broken by the soft chirp of a nearby bird in the many trees. The girl’s attire was only a white dress that hung loosely on her body, giving innuendos of her petite body figure. Only once in a while she would lick her red lips to keep them moist against the still blowing breeze. She finally put her feather-pen back in the ink bottle that sat on the ground next to her. She carefully closed the paper and set it by the ink bottle and stood. After looking back at the ducks once more, she turned to the left and walked back towards the village.

Once it was safe, the white stallion stepped out from behind the tree’s umbrage and approached the objects the girl left. He kicked at it until the letter opened and he held it to the ground with his left hoof as he read it. “It has been ten years to the day I last saw you. Why have you left me? I don’t understand. Life is too hard without your love. And so, my love, I shall cease to exist on Earth. Always with love, Amelia.

The white stallion neighed in worry and took off running into the forest. He finally reached the eternal white tree near the mountain side. He quickly reared up and kicked the tree, causing a single red fruit to fall to the ground. He picked it up with his teeth gently and began running back towards the village.

The girl stood carefully on the wooden table in the eating room. She had tied a rope to one of the ceiling boards and tied the end that hung into a loop. Tears rolled gently down her face as she placed the loop around her neck. Right as she lifted one foot off the table, the door was kicked open and fell to the ground with a thud, which scared Amelia.

The white horse stood in the doorway, staring intensely at Amelia before biting down on the red fruit. Amelia watched the horse chew and swallow the fruit, then collapse on the floor. Slowly, the body of the horse melted away to reveal the body of a man; the white fur of the horse transformed into the white, loose top and pants that the man was now wearing. Amelia hesitated before removing the loop from around her neck and stepped down carefully from the table. She walked lightly towards the man’s body on the ground. She kneeled next to him and gently touched his blond hair. The man looked up with sad eyes and tried to get up but could not.

“Amelia, my love, why did you try to do such a thing-” he asked, devastated.

“I was alone.” She answered simply.

“You know you were not. I am always watching over you.”

“It is not enough.” She answered, but her voice was barely over a whisper. She had helped him to an almost sitting position, although his body was still very weak from the transformation.

“I cannot stay like this forever, love. I wish I could, but I cannot.”

“I know. That’s why I will not stay like this either.”

“Yes, you will. You must. I will always be human when the earth shields the moon’s reflection.”

“But you left for so long.”

“Yes, because I have to. My herd must remain a normal herd, my love. I am their protector.”

“It is not meant to be, William. You, a spirit of horses, myself a lonely human. Perhaps when I die I will become a spirit, like you did.”

“The chances of that are too small; I will not allow you to annihilate yourself. I-” he cupped her chin in his hands and made sure she was looking into his eyes. “I cannot live knowing I will never hold you in my arms again.”

A tear fell down her cheek, “Is there any way I can join the herd? Please. I cannot live knowing you are out there, and I am trapped in here, in this village-”

He hung his head, grabbed the fruit next to him and held it shakily, “Anyone who wishes upon this fruit will have his or her wish come true if he or she takes a bite, but only spirits will be able to undo their own wishes-”

Amelia nodded her head slowly, “I understand.”

He hesitated handing it to her, “You will never walk on two legs, you will never be able to speak, you will never be able to eat what you wish, and you will never write again.”

The girl looked up with tears in her eyes, and a smile on her face, “I can go faster with four legs, I have no need to speak when I’m with you, I do not care for the taste of food if I’m not with you, and I only wrote to communicate with you. My life, my soul, my love, is all for you.”
