Title: Step Brothers

Rating: 17.9-

Word Count: 435

Summary: It may have made his mother's life much more wonderful, but it was going to ruin his.

It felt like some kind of dream, a dream Alex was sure he would wake from at any moment.

Everything had been so rushed, the engagement, the wedding, that Alex hadn't known what was happening until his mom told him they needed to get Alex a tuxedo for the Big Day. He had known his mother was seeing someone new, someone serious, after finally getting over the rejection of his former father walking out on them. It was just the two of them for so long, but that hadn't meant Alex didn't want his mom happy. He did.

…Alex just wanted some forewarning about what was to happen, because after this wedding not only was Alex getting a new father…but he was getting a brother.

…a brother whom he'd had crush on for the last two years.

Alex played with the asparagus on his dinner plate. They were now all at the reception, the wedding having gone perfect as planned. His mom and new father were blissful in their happiness. Alex wished he felt the same. He glanced up through his thick bangs at the boy he loved who sat across from him at the round table both of their immediate families sat at.

His crush's name was Jacob, and he was perfection in Alex's cool green eyes. Jacob was tall and broad shouldered, his body filling out to one of an adult everyday, compared to Alex's petite stature and rather feminine build. Jacob's dirty blond hair was short and sexily styled, not at all like Alex's long, thick and stubbornly wavy brown hair. Jacob's soft brown eyes were expressive and kind, and he was by far the most popular boy at their high school, the star of the basketball team and one of the smartest people in their class. Alex himself was pretty average with his smarts and didn't play any sports, but it was because he was a boy of the theater, a skilled actor and dancer.

The two of them never really crossed paths, for their interests were rather polar opposite, but Alex had fallen in love anyway. From afar he had fallen for Jacob's good looks, his sweet smile, and his hearty laugh. Jacob's father was practically the splitting image of his son so that made Alex happy for his mom.

…but it put him in between a rock and a hard place. On one hand he would now be spending uncountable minutes with Jacob as they started their senior year as family…but it also meant there was no hope of a romance between them.

Because brothers never fell in love…right?

AN: I'm contemplating making this bigger, but certainly no time soon, I've got other big stories that need my attention. Inspiration for this came from a manga oneshot by Yoshino Somei.
