october sky

fall-time weather confuses me
last week i was all smiles
because it almost felt like summer and
the autumn leaves made that satisfying crunch
on the walk home,
compared to today
when i chided myself for deciding
not to wear a coat
as my fingertips started turning a not-so-pretty
shade of blue.
maybe i’m still upset that i
take things so seriously but hope can
only get you so far & i’m tired of proving them right.
the other day it felt like waking up when
the boy sitting next to me in my
evening classes gave me a grin that
made me wonder why i had previously passed him off
as totally not my type,
while i have a tendency to fall for the ones that are a little bit
full of themselves.
my birthday’s coming up real soon and
i’m itching to do something reckless,
remember that i’m still alive.
