Conflagration

It is noon, and Summer reigns

Trees glow emerald under brilliant sun

Nourished by cool and gentle rains

Not knowing what is to come

.

High in the mountains, a single spark

Alights upon an upper bough

Of mighty oak in forest dark

It spreads, as winds begin to blow

.

The great oak flares, crimson and gold

Casting flickering light on time-worn boulder

Flame consumes the leaves of old

And the mountain winds grow colder

.

Soon the mountain is ablaze

With a glorious golden glow

Bathed in the light of the dawn’s first rays

And the fire begins to grow

.

The world itself is soon consumed

Every forest now is burning

The chilly air is sweet perfumed

As the leaves complete their turning

.

And now I walk beneath the trees

Their colors blaze like fire

Cool winds blow, set my mind at ease

While I listen to nature’s choir

.

Summer bows its head in solemn grace

Winter’s guide has come

The world now rests in the crisp embrace

Of the next due season, Autumn
