You said that you wanted
all the world could give you
but you never thought that maybe
no one had anything to give you
because no one would waste their time
on something so completely
un-precious
as you were then.
I suppose in the beginning I didn't know that, though.
Because I spent too many hours
(yeah, I spent years on you and that is far to many hours)
And you said that you deserved
all the words from my lips and
all the nerves in my fingers
"because, dear, those piano keys just
can not compare to me"
and I deeply wanted to tell you that
ivory is more precious than you will ever be,
but you've got a fragile heart.
You told me that I was always stuck in your head
and I would roll my eyes
because I never sung you anything that was me
and if you really thought I was...
And you said that you needed all those bus transfers
from my walls
"because, dear, I know you like to recycle
and I thought I'd spare you some time"
and obviously if you thought that was recycling
then you have no idea what I like
because you don't recycle memories,
you recycle chords and lyrics until they're just right.
And if you were something I had written
I'd certainly need to work on that song for a few more years
because that's how long it took you to realize that
"I hate you"
means just that and no,
dear,
I was not joking --
you are poison, child,
and I was through with this choking on all your
expensive shoes and ripped up t-shirts.
I didn't want to try to rewrite you any more
because I just don't like a7 chords and that's all you ever spoke in.
always in minor but you were already eighteen.
Some people were asking if this is a song, and the answer it actually no. I did reply to one review saying that I was, in fact, listening to a song while I wrote this, and so if this were a sort of song, that would be the music to go along with it.
If anyone else is interested, the song is "Princess of My Mind" by the Kooks and it is the complete opposite of this poem. (Look it up on YouTube if you're curious! It's where the title for this came from, anyways.)
