"It's time to go now sweetie," mum said softly, tucking my straight blond hair behind my ears and bending down to peer in my sky-blue eyes.
"Okay," I said, placing my small trusting hand inside hers.
As we stepped out into the cold night air I gave a little shiver.
Noticing this, my mum shrugged off her jacket and gave it to me. Struggling to get my arms in the huge sleeves, I wrapped it around my body and grabbed her hand again.
Side by side, we walked under the pale yellow light of the faded street lamps.
Stumbling along, I stared at the ground, making out patterns in the gravel, the tiny grey rocks forming faces and animals that seemed to growl at me.
Soon we were in our street. If I squinted hard enough I could just make out the lamppost illuminating our front porch.
"Love you mum," I said, smiling up at her.
"Love you…" my mum was cut off by a gasp.
Something had leapt out of the shadows right towards us.
Quickly, she grabbed me and tried to run but the creature was already upon us.
As it bit me and tore me to the side in its haste to reach my mum, I felt a trickle of blood run down my back.
Crying out in pain, I ran, hunched over, towards my house. My mother's scream's echoed after me.
Then, abruptly, they stopped.
As I reached up and unlocked the front door I took a quick look back before disappearing into my room.
I curled myself up into a ball on my bed and quietly sobbed, trying anything to escape the pain.
The last image I remembered before my mind drifted into unconsciousness was one of the creature bending over my mother's neck, bloodstained teeth bared into a grin.
