Hammerhead whales are blue and black

They make music that dances your tears

It’s easy to see them if you go really deep

They’ll teach you without any words

-

They’re impossibly big and impossibly old

They’ve been around since before things were bad

Once you finally find them, you don’t want to leave

But you have to or you’ll run out of air

-

It’s best to go deep to where bad stuff can’t go

And to swim with the hammerhead whales

Even I, who am ugly, have a star in my heart

When I’m with them it lights up my eyes

-

Up here there are gargoyles and men with sharp fangs

And everything’s covered in oil

But I know a place where the trainwhistle-roars

And the screaming red children can’t reach

-

Tomorrow I’m going to where they like to be

Only this time I’m not coming back

I’ll stay there forever, to swim and to sing,

And to sleep, with the hammerhead whales
