My back was turned from all of the cries for me to stop as I took a shaky breath. Was it rational to be standing on the edge of this building? Probably not. Would I have second thoughts about doing this while I was falling? I’m betting on it. But will it be worth it?
Absolutely.
Just about anything, even the death I was about to bring upon myself, was better than the hell I was currently trapped in. All around me my word was crumbling in with lie after lie and I wanted to end it so the pain and anger would stop. Call me a coward for not being able to face the demon that I was up against, but it won’t matter what anyone will think because I’ll be dead soon anyway.
“David, no!” I heard my mother cry out and then there were tears stinging at my eyes. No, I won’t cry. Taking my last breath, I closed my eyes while thinking of how stupid I was for standing on the edge of this building. Then, I was falling, and the only think I knew was the air rushing around me. The cries of pain and sorrow above me could no longer be heard because I was so blocked out from everything around me except for the air. Surprisingly, there were no second doubts and I only felt the impact upon my chest for a moment before I completely blacked out.

“So are you going to the movies this weekend David?” Shelly asked from beside me. She had been my best friend since before I could remember, but now I feared that our friendship may be coming to an end since I was beginning to become more and more popular as our first year in high school continued on.
“I’ve actually already made plans for this weekend. I have a date with Ciara,” I told her while nervously rubbing the back of my neck. From all the years that I’ve known Shelly, I’ve always known her to be a bit overly emotional and sometimes become a bit melodramatic about some of the smallest things. Not going to the movies with her because I have a date with a girl she’s hated since the second grade qualifies as one of those ‘little things’.
“Oh… well I hope you have fun. Maybe next weekend,” she said with a weak yet hopeful smile. More rubbing of the back of my neck while I thought back to the plans I had made for next weekend as well.
“Uh…. the guys invited me to a football game and they’re really great seats so….” I trailed off there since I wasn’t really sure what else to tell her. That’s two times in a row that I’ve turned down my best friend for a chance to hang out and I was beginning to feel like more of a jerk by the second.
“Next weekend?” I asked meekly while Shelly stared down at her white shoe laces.
“Don’t worry David, I know it’s hard to make time for me since you now have more popular friends,” she bit out rather harshly.
“There’s no need for attitude Shelly, I really am sorry about this and I’m not trying to get rid of you by replacing you with popular friends,” I snapped back and immediately realized my mistake in saying that. Shelly is a smart girl who catches on to things quickly and is most likely to throw them back in your face with a good snap just as quickly.
“I never said that David, but thanks for making me feel better about this.” Like I said; catches on quickly and it’s back with a snap.
“Oh come on Shelly! It’s not fair that you’re making me seem like the bad guy in all of this!” I almost yelled at her. She’s been known to be melodramatic and I’ve been known to have a short temper that can easily be triggered so I become dangerous to myself and everyone around me when I’m really pissed.
We’ve stopped walking home by now and are instead turning to glare at each other. I, though only 15 at the time, still had a good five inches on her since I stood at 5’5 and she only 5 foot.
“I’m not making you ‘seem’ like the bad guy, you already are the bad guy!” she yelled back at me. I felt the anger begin to boil over and knew that I would soon say something that I may learn to regret.
“Well if you think I’m such an awful person then why are you still friends with me?!” Like I said, something I would regret. Shelly was silent and I was waiting for her to explode into the tears that would calm me back down so that I could apologize to her and actually mean it. That’s the way things usually work in our oddly twisted friendship, but this time no tears came, just a silent whisper that broke my already fractured heart.
“We’re not friends anymore, so now I don’t have to deal with you and your pour attitude,” she said softly and slowly almost as if she was talking more so to herself. These words took me by surprise and I actually backed up a little to stare at her with wide eyes.
“W-what?” I stuttered, feeling like a complete idiot for doing so.
“I have to go,” Shelly mumbled before shoving past me and running down the sidewalk to her house that was at least three blocks away. The power of her shove left me on the front lawn of some house and when I looked up to see what the house looked like, I was surprised to see that we had been fighting in front of my house. From the living room window I could see my mother staring out the window at me with tears in her eyes. I myself felt the tears begin to form in my eyes as I entered the house silently and headed up to my room just as silently to mourn over the lost of the only true friend I’ve ever really had.

I was lying in a bed next to Ciara with the sheets tangled around us while we both let out labored breaths. Beginning of sophomore year and I had already lost my virginity, to an older woman too since Ciara was a junior.
“Oh wow David, for your first time that was amazing,” she told me in a pleasured sigh. I only mutely nodded while thoughts haunted my mind that weren’t at all related to the sex I had just had. They all in fact, were related around Shelly who I hadn’t spoken to in almost a whole year.
“How about a round two?” Ciara offered with a seductive smile while she climbed onto me so that she was straddling my hips and growing erection. In reply I sat up slightly so I could wrap my arms around her too thin of a waist and pull her into a deep kiss while my hands wandered over her body earning me soft moans and gasps of nothing but pleasure. In the midst of our love affair I heard my phone vibrate on the ground within my pant pocket. I waited for it to stop vibrating signaling that I just had a new text message, but when it kept vibrating I had to pull away from Ciara, who pouted, to see how was calling me.
“Shelly?” I wondered aloud while looking at the caller ID in bewilderment.
“It’s nothing important baby, just come back to bed,” Ciara told me and truthfully, she sounded like she had said that line a couple of times before which wouldn’t surprise me since she was far from a virgin. Ignoring the thoughts of my not-so-innocent girlfriend I began to instead wonder about why the hell Shelly would be calling me if she hated my guts.
“I’m sorry Ciara, I’ve got to get this,” I told said woman in the bed next to me before I pulled on my boxers, grabbed my phone, and left her bedroom.
“Shelly?” I answered once I was a good distance away from Ciara’s bedroom door. There was sniffling and what sounded like choked sobs before I heard the voice that I had been missing out on for almost a year now.
“They’re d-dead D-david,” Shelly sobbed to me and I felt panic begin to course through my system.
“What?! Who’s dead?” I asked, my words coming out in a bit of a worried shout.
“My p-parents. Someone b-broke into t-the house and k-k-killed them!” she cried into the phone and now I was heading back to Ciara’s room so I could get my clothes back on. Holding my cell phone between my right shoulder and my right ear I began to pull on my pants while trying to hear what Shelly was telling me. From behind me I could hear Ciara’s questioning voice as I slipped on my shoes, grabbed my discarded shirt and pulled my car keys out from my jean pocket.
“Where are you Shelly?” She told me she was at her house. “I’ll be there in five minutes Shelly. Don’t move, I’m coming to get you,” I assured her before hanging up the phone and shoving it into my other jean pocket.
“Where are you going David?” Ciara asked as I headed for her door once again. She wasn’t naked now since she had pulled on a short silk robe but that sure as hell didn’t cover much.
“Uh, something happened to a friend and I have to go. I’ll call you tomorrow baby,” I told her in a rushed slur of words before kissing her swiftly and pretty much running out of her house to my car so that I could get to Shelly.

I held Shelly’s hand in my firmly as she shook while trying to keep her sobs down to a minimal volume since someone was still praying while they lowered her parents into the ground. It’s been a week since I got her phone call and now I stood next to her in the cold November rain at her parents’ funeral at the age of 16. There were many people there, though most of them were just business friends of Shelly’s dad since he had been a big businessman which explained all the cash they had.
“My God help carry them over to Heaven so that their daughter may someday join them.” Not any time soon old man, not as long as I’m still around. There was a stroke of lightning followed by the loud booming of thunder as it continued to pour. Thankfully I had an umbrella large enough for both Shelly and I to fit under since she wouldn’t have been able to hold up her own umbrella since she was having a hard enough time as it was staying standing. When two men began to shovel the now mud onto the lowered coffins Shelly finally let out all of her tears as she turned to me and buried her face into my chest since she was too short to reach my shoulder. I now stood at a rather impressive 5’9 while she was still a rather small 5’4.
“I’m so sorry Shelly,” was all I could whisper while trying to hold back my own tears. I had to stay strong for Shelly so that she could have someone to lean on when times got hard. No matter if she didn’t want me back as a friend, I would be by her side from now on to make sure she stays safe and doesn’t do what the old man was preaching about any time soon.
I’ll keep you safe Shelly, that I promise.

So I know I probably shouldn’t be posting another story since I’m so far behind in No Objections but I just had to post this story because I’ve fallen in love with it. I know that there was a lot of flashbacks in this chapter, but there are more to come (both chapter 2 and 3 are full of them and probably most of chapter 4, if not all of it, will be flashbacks too) because they all kinda explain why David tried to kill himself in the first place which I’m sure anyone who’s reading this is curious to know.
The next update will be two weeks or so, but until then please review! I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter!
