CHAPTER ONE

It was the first of November. A short, fifteen-year-old girl with long brown hair with blonde highlights and hazel eyes hidden behind glasses named Elizabeth Osborn “Beth” exited the warm mansion-like house. She was one of the richest people in the state of New York. Although if you watched the way she acted, you wouldn't believe it. She was kind, and gentle. She cared about everyone. She was a very sensitive Pisces.

Her mother had just told her that they were having guests that night and that the son would be coming to their house after school. The son's name was Jake Reynolds. Jake was a tall, sixteen-year-old boy with short brown hair and brown eyes. And of course- he was the guy Elizabeth had a crush on. Elizabeth had wanted to hurt her mother when she had heard that it was him that would be staying after school.

She ran a hand through her hair and waited for her best friend, Tricia Stanford, to walk onto the corner that they always met at. Tricia had long blonde hair and had blue eyes behind glasses. They had been friends for as long as they could remember.

“What's up?” Tricia asked as soon as she saw Elizabeth run her hand through her hair

“Jake is coming to my house after school. My mother apparently invited them over for dinner.” Elizabeth said

“Wow. You're gonna have fun with that.” Tricia said

“And I didn't find out until just before I left.” Elizabeth said sighing as they started to walk, “I am going to be a nervous wreck.”

“You'll be fine.” Tricia said, patting her best friend's shoulder, “You always are.”

“Yeah, right.” Elizabeth scuffed

They waited on the sidewalk near the school for their other friends' buses to come. There was only one other friend that didn't ride the bus. That was Jackalyn “Jackie” Shinto. She had long black hair and blue eyes.

A bus pulled over, and Jake along with a tall, sixteen-year-old girl with long blonde hair and hazel eyes which, today, were behind contacts. “Hey Tay!” Tricia said happily as the blonde walked over

“Hey,” Taylor “Tay” Wade said smiling

“Jake!” Elizabeth said before Jake could walk away

“What?” Jake said, turning to her

“You're coming to my house after school, right?” Elizabeth said

“Yeah. Meet me at the flagpole after school.” Jake said, and walked away

“Gees, what's his problem?” Tricia asked, folding her arms

“He was mumbling something about his mom and her boyfriend forcing him to do something.” Taylor said shrugging

“He has to come to my house after school. That's probably why. Our families are having dinner together tonight.” Elizabeth said and sighed

“Hey- you'll get him to like you, don't worry.” Tricia said smiling, laying a hand on Elizabeth's shoulder

“Yeah right.” Elizabeth said

A bus pulled up and two sixteen-year-old girls came over. One was short and had long light brown hair and brown eyes, and the other was tall with shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes. “Hey,” the two said

“Hey Kels, hey Britt.” they said

“What's with the gloomy face Beth?” the tall one, Kelsey “Kels” Studer, asked, seeing Elizabeth's face

“Jake has to go to her house today after school.” Tricia said

“Shouldn't you be jumping with joy then?” the other one, Brittany “Britt” Goodwin, said, confused

“He doesn't want to come.” Elizabeth said

“Oh well. If he doesn't see what a great girl you are then its his problem.” Kelsey said, putting an arm around Elizabeth, “There are plenty of other guys around.”

“Too bad he's practically the only one I like.” Elizabeth said sighing

“Stop thinking like that.” Kelsey said, and poked Elizabeth's stomach, “Now lets see a smile before I have to tickle you Beth!”

“Alright, alright!” Elizabeth said laughing, “I can't help but smile with you girls.”

“Good.” Jackalyn said walking over, “We'd rather have you smiling then frowning.”

“Yeah!” Taylor said happily

---

Elizabeth sighed as she shut her locker. It was already after school. She hoped that her heart would stop beating so fast as she walked over to Brittany's locker.

“You okay?” Brittany asked as Elizabeth run a hand through her hair

“Yeah. Just nervous.” Elizabeth said

“You'll be fine. Go and meet him now.” Brittany said

“Alright...wish me luck.” Elizabeth said smiling

“You don't need luck. You'll be fine.” Brittany said smiling

“Yeah. I hope.” Elizabeth said, and left

“Finally,” Jake, who leaned against the cement block around the flagpole, said as Elizabeth walked over

“Sorry,” she said timidly, “I take it you're ready to go?”

“Yeah. What about you?” Jake said

“Yeah.” she said sighing, “Lets go.”

“Alright.” Jake said

“Beth!” Tricia said, running over to the two

“Hey Trish,” Elizabeth said smiling

“How ya doing?” Tricia whispered

“Nervous.” she whispered

“You'll be fine.” Tricia whispered

“What are you doing here Tricia?” Jake asked rudely

“Walking with my best friend. Do you have a problem with that?” Tricia asked, putting her hands on her hips

“No fighting you two.” Elizabeth said, putting her hands up

“Alright,” Tricia said sighing, “But call me later, alright?”

“Alright,” Elizabeth said smiling, and Tricia went down her own street as she and Jake turned the corner

“So where do you live anyways?” Jake asked

“You'll see. But I can tell you two things- you probably won't believe I live there and you won't be able to miss it.” Elizabeth said

“What are you talking about?” he asked, confused

“You'll see.” she said smiling slightly, and they walked in silence the rest of the way

Jake stood in front of the mansion-like house as Elizabeth turned. “Aren't you going into the wrong house Beth?” he said, confused

“No. I told you that you probably wouldn't believe I live here.” Elizabeth said smiling, “This is my house. My family is very rich.”

“Damn.” Jake said, whistling as he entered the house, “You sure don't act it.”

“Yeah, I know.” she said sighing, and opened the door, “Hey mom- I'm home with Jake!”

“Oh, hi!” a tall, forty-year-old woman with short brown hair said, coming down a set of stairs, “You must be Jake! Its a pleasure to meet you!”

“You too Mrs. Osborn.” Jake said, smiling as he shook the woman's, Irene's, hand

“Your mother said that she was going to get out of work at 4:00 and that she and Rich would be here at about 5:00.” Irene said

“Alright,” Jake said

“Beth, why don't you give him a tour of the house? I have to go back to work.” Irene suggested, turning to Elizabeth

“Fine,” Elizabeth said sighing, “Lets put our stuff in the living room first.”

“Alright,” Jake said

---

“Damn it,” Elizabeth cursed

“I didn't know you would swear.” Jake said smirking

They were in the living room. They had already finished the tour, and were now working on homework.

“Shut up,” Elizabeth said blushing, “Obviously you haven't been around me that much.”

“Obviously.” Jake said

Elizabeth looked over the Math problem again. “What did I do wrong on this?” she muttered to herself

“What's up?” Jake asked

“Math question. But you're in Geometry, aren't you?” Elizabeth said

“Yeah, why?” Jake asked

“I'm in Math B. Totally different things right now.” she said sighing

“Oh,” Jake said

---

There was a knock on the door. Elizabeth went to get it, but she could hear people talking as she stood up.

“Beth! Jake!” Irene shouted towards them

“Coming!” Elizabeth said, turning to Jake, “Its probably your mother and...Rich? Your father, right?”

“No. He's my mom's boyfriend. My parents are divorced.” Jake said standing

“Oh. So are mine,” Elizabeth said

“There you are.” Irene said smiling

“Yeah. Sorry about that.” Elizabeth said smiling

Elizabeth looked over to the couple standing in front of them. The woman was forty, and had short, dark brown hair. The man stood beside her, and seemed to be about forty-five, and had short brown hair.

“Hi, I'm Elizabeth. Call me Beth though.” Elizabeth said smiling, holding her hand out

“Hi, I'm Emily, Jake's mother. This is my boyfriend, Rich Anderson.” the woman said, smiling as she shook Elizabeth's hand

“Its a pleasure to meet you.” Elizabeth said smiling, shaking Rich's, the man's, hand as well

“You too.” Emily said smiling

“Come on, we'll eat dinner in the dining room.” Irene said, “The pizza should be here soon. I hope you all don't mind.”

“No, its fine.” Rich said

“Pizza?” Elizabeth asked

“Yeah, is something wrong with that Beth?” Irene asked

“No, its great actually.” Elizabeth said smiling

“Alright.” Irene said, “I hope you don't mind just cheese. But I wasn't sure what you all wanted, so I just went with plain.”

“That's fine.” Emily said smiling

“Do you want anything to drink?” Elizabeth asked as they entered the living room

“What do you have?” Emily asked

“Lets see...Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Sierra Mist Free, milk, water, and I don't know if mom has a pot of coffee on but I could start a pot.” Elizabeth said

“I started a pot. It should be done by now. I'll have a cup if you don't mind Beth.” Irene said

“Of course not. What about you three?” Elizabeth asked smiling

“Coffee.” Rich answered

“Coffee as well.” Emily said smiling

“Mountain Dew.” Jake said

“Alright. Will you two want anything with your coffee?” Elizabeth asked

“No, that's okay.” Emily said

“No,” Rich said

“Alright. I'll be right back.” Elizabeth said, and left the room

“Jake- why don't you go help her? She's going to have a lot to carry.” Emily said

“Whatever,” he responded, and walked out of the room

“They seem to be distant.” Emily said

“Yeah, but I'm sure they'll warm up quickly.” Irene said smiling

“Yeah. Beth is very polite and generous.” Emily said

“Thank you.” Irene said

“Here you are.” Elizabeth said as she and Jake walked in, Jake holding two bottles of pop and Elizabeth carrying three cups of coffee, “I'm not sure if I put enough milk in there mom.”

“Perfect as usual.” Irene said smiling after she took a sip

“Alright,” Elizabeth said smiling, and put the other two cups in front of Emily and Rich

“Thank you,” Emily said

“Yep,” Elizabeth said smiling

Elizabeth sat beside her mother, who sat across from Emily, and Elizabeth was across from Rich. Beside Rich was Jake.

“Here's the money for the pizza.” Irene said, handing Elizabeth some money

“Alright,” Elizabeth said

The door bell rang and Elizabeth stood up, saying “Excuse me,” and ran out of the room.

“Hey,” Elizabeth said smiling as she opened the door

The pizza deliverer wore a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, his hair was short and dirty blonde, and his eyes were hazel. His name was Brandon Russell. “Hey,” he said. His voice was deep, and Elizabeth couldn't help but smile even more. “$15.90,”

“Alright,” Elizabeth said, handing him the money

“What's with the large? I thought you didn't like pizza all that much?” Brandon asked

“I don't. We're having company tonight.” Elizabeth said sighing, “It kind of sucks. I would rather be writing then anything right now.”

“Writing deprived I take it?” Brandon said laughing

“Yeah. I wasn't able to write AT ALL today.” Elizabeth said laughing, “What about you?”

“Just doing my usual.” Brandon said, “Hey- I'll give ya a call tonight, maybe we can hang out later this week.”

“Maybe.” she said blushing, and got her cell phone out of her pocket, “Add your number.”

“Alright.” Brandon said, “I'll call ya.”

“I'll look forward to it. See ya,” Elizabeth said, taking her phone and the pizza

“See ya,” Brandon said, and left

Elizabeth had to contain herself from jumping up and down as she took the pizza into the dining room.

“What's the freaky grin?” Jake asked as Elizabeth entered

“None of your business.” Elizabeth said, “Here's the pizza.”

“Was Brandon the one that delivered it?” Irene asked. There was a tone in her voice that Emily caught.

“Yeah,” Elizabeth said blushing

“We have to talk to you both after we're done eating.” Irene said

“Okay.” they said
