Smile

Sneaking glances
at each other
from across
the room.

I give you
a hidden smile
and you swiftly
send me one too.

A little game
we always play
that no one
knows about.

Silently,
quietly,
without noise,
no doubt.

My heart
skips a beat
when we
lock eyes,

and the corners
of your lips
curve into
a smile.

The bell has rung,
the end of our game.
I have to go,
as so do you.

My eyes
lock with yours
with another glance
from across the room.

You whisper in my ear,
“I’ll see you soon.”
I whisper back,
“Only a little while.”

None of those words
were murmured through lips.
They were the ones
said through a smile.
